Nitoband SA: Self-Adhesive Sealing Tape - Technical Details, Specifications, Features & Entities

Product Overview

Nitoband SA is a non-woven polypropylene tape coated with highly elastic self-adhesive butyl rubber, specifically engineered as a superior bond breaker alternative to traditional sealing methods. It is designed for use in conjunction with Nitoproof water-based liquid membranes to seal critical movement zones in waterproofing applications.

Key Features & Advantages

Self-Adhesive Installation

  • Simple application with no waiting time required for joint sealants to skin and cure
  • Self-adhesive installation enables immediate membrane application without delays

Performance Capabilities

  • High elongation and movement capabilities allowing the tape to withstand both longitudinal and lateral directional movement
  • Waterproof in its own right, offering dual protection when combined with Nitoproof water-based liquid membrane overlay
  • Flexible bond breaker system eliminating the need for traditional sealant beads and backing rods

Product Code & Supply

Product Code: FC000669-UNIT

Supply Format:

  • 80mm wide × 10m rolls
  • Supplied with release film for ease of handling and installation

Standards Compliance

Nitoband SA has been independently tested to meet:

  • AS/NZ 4654.1 2012 - Waterproofing membranes for external above-ground use
  • AS/NZS 4858:2004 - Wet area membrane specifications as a Class III membrane
  • AS 3740:2021 - Waterproofing of wet areas within residential buildings

The Nitoband System (which incorporates Nitoband SA) is suitable for use with:

  • Class I membrane systems per AS4858 and AS4654
  • Class II membrane systems per AS4858 and AS4654
  • Class III membrane systems per AS4858 and AS4654

Application Areas

Suitable Applications

  • Internal wet areas (bathrooms, showers, wet rooms)
  • External applications (balconies, terraces, exposed areas)
  • Underground waterproofing (basements, foundations)
  • Fully immersed conditions (pools, ponds, water retaining structures)

Specific Uses

  • Sealing substrate junctions and movement zones
  • Covering sheet joints before membrane application
  • Detailing at wall-to-wall and wall-to-floor junctions
  • Accommodating expansion joints up to 25mm
  • Bond breaking at changes of direction in waterproofing systems

Installation & Preparation Requirements

Substrate Preparation

The substrate must be:

  • Clean and sound
  • Stable and free of protrusions
  • Suitably primed according to substrate type

Priming Requirements

For Porous Masonry Surfaces:

  • Nitoprime 120 at approximately 7m²/L, OR
  • Nitoproof 510 (more robust primer) at 5m²/L

For Non-Porous Substrates:

  • Nitoprime 115 at approximately 12m²/L
  • Suitable for: CFC, wet area timber, ceramic tile, metals, and plastics

Installation Process

  1. Prime the area according to substrate type
  2. Install Nitoband SA tape to primed substrate when dry
  3. Fold tape in half along its length
  4. Position along joints with appropriate overlap
  5. Apply Nitoproof water-based membrane according to product instructions
  6. Ensure all air voids are expelled during membrane application

Forming Corner Pieces

Nitoband SA can be used to form corner pieces positioned prior to laying longer tape lengths:

  1. Cut 300-400mm lengths of tape
  2. Shape by cutting a "V" section from half the tape width
  3. Fold along the dotted line to form the corner
  4. Roll securely with a small rubber roller

Storage & Handling

Storage Conditions:

  • Store in clean and dry conditions
  • Maintain original packaging integrity
  • Store at temperatures between 5°C and 30°C for optimal shelf life
  • Keep release film intact until application

Safety & Documentation

  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS) available from Fosroc website
  • Technical Data Sheet (TDS) should be read carefully prior to use
  • Emergency contact: Poisons Information Centre (13 11 26 within Australia)

System Integration

Primary Membrane Partners

Nitoband SA works in conjunction with:

  • Nitoproof 410 - Water-based polyurethane membrane for general waterproofing
  • Nitoproof 510 - Robust primer for porous masonry surfaces
  • Nitoprime 115 & 120 - Substrate primers

Related Components

The Nitoband System also includes:

  • Nitoband Corners (Internal 90°, External 270°, Adjustable Internal)
  • Nitoband Pipe Penetration Detailing Squares (Small, Medium, Large)
  • Nitoband Tape (120mm wide alternative)
