Application and Coverage
Design Criteria:
- Applied in two coats at 750 microns per coat each
- Achieves total membrane thickness of 1.5mm wet film thickness
- Results in minimum dry film thickness of 1.0 to 1.3mm
Coverage Rate:
- 1.5 to 2.0 litres/m² for complete 2-coat application
- Each 15-litre pail covers approximately 10m² when applied at minimum 750 microns per coat
- Minimum wet film thickness per coat: 0.75mm (750 microns)
Drying Times
Drying times vary depending on ambient temperature conditions:
| Condition | At 23°C, 50% RH | At 10°C, 50% RH |
|---|---|---|
| Recoat Time | 4 hours | 8 hours |
| Dry Film | 24 hours | 48 hours |
| Backfilling | 3 days | 4 days |
Application Methods
Nitoproof 210 can be applied using multiple techniques:
- Roller application (12mm nap recommended)
- Brush application
- Standard airless sprayer (piston pump unit with 21 to 25 thou tip size) - product must be thoroughly mixed before spraying
The smooth texture and non-sag formulation makes it suitable for both vertical and horizontal application.
Substrate Preparation and Priming
Surface Requirements
Surfaces must be clean, sound, stable, and free of:
- Loose foreign material
- Existing coatings
- Laitance
- Release agents
- Curing compounds
- Oil and grease residues
Substrate Moisture
- New concrete must cure for 28 days before application
- New render finishes must cure for 7 days before application
- Application may proceed earlier if moisture content has been verified as <5% (measured with Tramex CMEX5 Moisture Meter)
Priming Requirements
Self-priming capability: Nitoproof 210 is self-priming on most porous surfaces. Dilute Nitoproof 210 at 1:1 ratio by volume with water, stir until homogeneous, and apply using brush or roller.
Coverage for primer: 0.4 to 0.8L/m² depending on substrate porosity and condition.
For non-porous substrates (metals and plastics): Nitoprime 115 may be selected as an alternative primer.
Crack and Joint Treatment
Cracks larger than 2mm or structural shrinkage cracks must be:
- Filled with flexible polyurethane sealant such as Nitoseal PU250 or Nitoseal PU400
- Covered with 50mm wide polyethylene tape before Nitoproof 210 application
- Alternatively, covered with the Nitoband Tape System
Nitoband System Integration
When used in tanking and waterproofing applications, Nitoproof 210 requires a suitable bond breaker at all substrate junctions. The Nitoband System includes:
- Tape for change of direction (wall/wall and wall/floor joints)
- 270° external corners (135mm x 135mm)
- 90° internal corners (135mm x 135mm)
- Adjustable internal corner (135mm x 135mm)
- Three size variations of pipe penetration detailing squares (suitable for 6mm to 150mm pipe diameters)
Application method: Apply Nitoproof 210 across substrate joins extending approximately 70mm either side of the join. While the membrane is still in wet state, install Nitoband components ensuring all air voids are expelled.
Membrane Application Process
Coating Application
- Laid onto surface continually in one direction
- Maintain wet film thickness throughout application
- Each successive coat applied at 90 degrees to the previous coat
- Allows 4 hours between coats for film to dry at 23°C
- Shorter times may be acceptable in good drying conditions
Inspection and Quality Control
Conduct final inspection on membrane surface prior to backfilling to ensure no pinholes exist. An additional coat may be required if imperfections or pinholes are present.
Protective Requirements
Protection from mechanical damage is essential in certain applications:
- Basement applications: Protect with Proofex Protection Board PP or Proofex Sheetdrain 81 drainage and protection sheet
- This prevents damage during backfilling and construction activities
Specialized Applications
Key Joints and Dowel Bars
Nitoproof 210 is suitable as a coating on key joints and dowel bars. When allowed to dry prior to pouring the next concrete section, it forms an effective slip layer permitting relative movement between sections.
Ponding Water Resistance
Nitoproof 210 demonstrates excellent resistance to ponding water, enabling effective protection in applications subject to prolonged water pooling without degradation.
Supply Configuration
Product Code: FC000605-15L
Nitoproof 210 is supplied in 15-litre pails.
Storage and Shelf Life
- Store in original, unopened containers in dry conditions
- Temperature range: 5°C to 30°C
- Do not use if lumps are present or if product has bacterial smell
- Storage in high temperature and high humidity locations may reduce shelf life
Cleaning and Maintenance
Wet State Cleaning
- Splashes on paintwork should be wiped off immediately with water and strong detergent solution
- Brushes and brooms should be soaked in strong detergent solution immediately after application
Dried Material Removal
Where Nitoproof 210 has dried on equipment or surfaces, it may be removed using:
- Fosroc Solvent 10
- Mechanical means
Limitations
Nitoproof 210 has specific application constraints:
- Not recommended for continuous water immersion or internal walls subject to back pressure
- Not designed as an exposed wearing course membrane
- Must be covered and cannot be exposed to UV on a permanent basis
- Not designed to be finished directly over with tiles, screeds, renders, or paints
Important Application Note
Application of all liquid-applied membranes should always refer to surface temperature conditions before commencing application, not just ambient temperatures. Substrate temperature may differ significantly from ambient temperature (e.g., ambient 10°C but substrate 0°C with frost issues; or ambient 26°C but substrate 36°C).
