Nitoproof 810: Water-Based Polyurethane Waterproofing Membrane

Overview

Nitoproof 810 is a highly flexible, non-flammable, water-based polyurethane waterproofing membrane designed for a wide range of applications in the built environment. This single-component system offers exceptional performance characteristics, particularly for moisture-exposed areas including wet zones, terraces, balconies, and roof areas.

Key Features and Advantages

Nitoproof 810 provides several distinctive advantages that make it suitable for diverse waterproofing applications:

  • Elastomeric and Flexible: Exhibits high performance elastomeric properties with excellent elastic recovery
  • Permanently Wet Conditions: Will not re-emulsify once cured and handles permanently wet conditions effectively
  • Low Water Absorption: Demonstrates low water absorption characteristics, crucial for long-term durability
  • Low VOC Content: Contains less than 2g/litre of volatile organic compounds, making it environmentally friendly
  • Non-Hazardous: Non-flammable and non-hazardous formulation
  • Excellent Chemical Resistance: Resists various chemical exposures in sealed applications
  • Fast Flood Testing: Can be flood tested after just 48 hours at 23°C/50% RH
  • Low Water Vapour Transmission: Provides outstanding barrier properties against moisture vapor at 4.34 g/m²/24 hours

Application Specifications

Design Criteria

Nitoproof 810 is designed for application by thick brush or roller in two (2) coats with the following specifications:

  • Total Minimum Wet Film Thickness (WFT): 1.5 mm
  • Total Coverage Required: 1.5 litres/m²
  • Minimum Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 1.0 mm
  • Coverage Rate: Approximately 10 m² per 15-litre drum

Drying Times

Condition 23°C, 50% RH 10°C, 50% RH
Recoat Time 4 hours 6 hours
Dry Film Development 12 hours 24 hours
Flood Test Readiness 48 hours 72 hours
Tiling/Toppings 24 hours 48 hours

Surface Preparation Requirements

Surfaces must be prepared to demanding standards before application:

  • Clean, sound, and stable surfaces
  • Free from loose foreign material, existing coatings, laitance, release agents, curing compounds, and oil/grease residues
  • Moisture content not exceeding 5% (tested with Tramex CMEX5 meter) on concrete and masonry substrates
  • All screw and nail heads sealed with Nitoseal PU250 or Nitoseal PU400
  • All sheet joints covered with Nitoband Tape system
  • All protrusions removed to prevent membrane piercing

Priming Requirements

Substrate priming is mandatory before Nitoproof 810 application:

  • Porous Masonry Surfaces: Apply Nitoprime 120 at approximately 7 m²/L, or for more robust priming, apply one coat of Nitoproof 510 at 5 m²/L
  • Non-Porous Substrates (CFC, wet area timber, ceramic tile, metals, plastics): Apply Nitoprime 115 at approximately 12 m²/L
  • Damp Surfaces with Entrapped Moisture: Seek technical advice from Fosroc

Suitable Applications

Nitoproof 810 is suitable for a comprehensive range of applications:

  • Wet Areas and Shower Alcoves: Classified as Class III Membrane System
  • Podiums, Terraces, Balconies, and Deck Areas: Applied under toppings, tiles, and other finishes
  • Foot Trafficable Exposed Roofs: When overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV
  • Sandwich Membranes: Between existing and new substrates (old to new concrete, cement screeds over concrete and CFC surfaces)
  • General Moisture-Exposed Areas: Any location exposed to moisture and damp conditions

Standards Compliance

Nitoproof 810 has achieved rigorous independent testing and standards certification:

  • AS/NZ 4654.1:2012: Waterproofing membranes for external above-ground use (XTecGen test report 397-23)
  • AS/NZS 4858:2004: Wet Area Membrane classified as Class III against AS 3740:2021 (XTecGen test report 397-25)
  • AS 4586-2013: Slip resistance testing when overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV and Nitoproof Top Coat EW

Limitations and Important Considerations

UV Resistance Limitations

While Nitoproof 810 possesses UV resistance properties, it is not designed for long-term exposed use as a standalone product. For extended outdoor exposure or foot-trafficable applications, appropriate top coat protection is essential. Overcoating with Nitoproof Top Coat UV not only protects the base membrane from UV degradation but also provides a foot-trafficable membrane system suitable for exposed rooftops and balcony decks.

Surface Temperature Considerations

A critical application note: Always refer to surface temperature conditions before commencing application, not just ambient temperatures. Surface temperatures can differ significantly from ambient conditions:

  • Ambient temperature of 10°C may correspond to a substrate at 0°C with frost issues
  • Ambient temperature of 26°C may correspond to a substrate at 36°C

Cleaning and Maintenance

  • Wet State Cleanup: Nitoproof 810 cleans up with water while in wet state
  • Dried Material Removal: Once dried, material requires removal by Fosroc Solvent 10 or mechanical means
  • Equipment Cleaning: Brushes and brooms should be soaked in strong detergent solution immediately after application

Storage and Shelf Life

  • Shelf Life: 18 months in original unopened containers
  • Storage Conditions: Cool, dry conditions at temperatures between 5°C and 30°C
  • Temperature Sensitivity: Storage above 30°C may reduce storage life
