Product Intelligence

Nitoproof 410: Fast Curing Cementitious Waterproofing Membrane

Product Overview

Nitoproof 410 is a water-based, fast-drying, flexible two-component polymer-modified cementitious waterproofing membrane manufactured by Fosroc. It is designed for a wide range of waterproofing applications in both internal and external environments. The product is supplied in 25kg packs that yield approximately 19.2 litres of mixed product when the two components are combined.

Key Characteristics

Composition and Form

Nitoproof 410 consists of two distinct components:

  • Part A (Liquid Component): A white liquid supplied in 12.5L volumes with product code FC000603-12.5L
  • Part B (Powder Component): A grey powder supplied in 12.5kg volumes with product code FC000604-12.5KG

The components must be mixed in equal parts by weight (ratio of 1:1) or at the ratio of 1L Part A liquid to 0.8L Part B dry powder to create a grey slurry ready for application.

Application Specifications

Design Criteria

Nitoproof 410 is engineered for two application scenarios:

General Waterproofing Applications:

  • Applied as two (2) coats
  • Minimum Wet Film Thickness (WFT): 1.6mm
  • Coverage: 1.6 litres/m²
  • Minimum Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 1.3mm

Permanently Wet or Submerged Conditions:

  • Applied as three (3) coats
  • Minimum WFT: 2.0mm
  • Coverage: 2.0 litres/m²
  • Minimum DFT: 1.6mm

Application Methods

Nitoproof 410 is designed for application by:

  • Thick brush
  • Roller
  • Suitable airless spray equipment

Each successive coat should be applied at 90 degrees to the previous coat, with drying time of 1-3 hours between coats.

Standards Compliance and Durability

Regulatory Standards

Nitoproof 410 has been independently tested and complies with:

  • AS/NZS 4858:2004 - Wet Area Membrane as a Class II membrane
  • AS 3740:2021 - Waterproofing of Wet Areas Within Residential Buildings
  • AS/NZS 4654.1:2012 - Waterproofing membranes for external above-ground use Part 1: Materials
  • AS 4586-2013 - Slip resistance testing (when overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV or Nitoproof Top Coat EW)

Durability Rating

  • Cyclic Movement: Class II (AS/NZS 4858)
  • Durability Rating: Class II (AS/NZS 4858)

Product Applications

Nitoproof 410 is suitable for a wide range of applications:

  • Podiums, terraces, balconies, and deck areas – under toppings, tiles, and other protected environments
  • Wet areas and showers – classified as a Class II Membrane System
  • Foot trafficable exposed roof tops and balcony decks – subject to regular foot traffic when overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV
  • Water tanks and water storage areas – requires sand/cement slurry priming with Nitobond SBR
  • Tiled pools and water features – essential sand/cement slurry priming with Nitobond SBR
  • Foundation waterproofing applications
  • Subterranean areas – such as retaining walls and planter boxes when used with suitable protection and drainage systems

Shelf Life and Storage

Storage Requirements

Nitoproof 410 components have different shelf life periods when stored in original, unopened packaging:

  • Part A (Liquid): 24 months from date of manufacture
  • Part B (Powder): 36 months from date of manufacture

Storage should be maintained in cool, dry conditions. Do not use if there are lumps present in the product.

Key Advantages

  • Low VOC – 9g/litre with solvent-free, non-hazardous formulation
  • Handles ponding and permanently wet conditions – suitable for submerged applications
  • Tough and flexible – with excellent elongation properties (93%)
  • Suitable for internal and external applications
  • High Shore A hardness (65)
  • Australian made
  • Compatible with polymer modified cement-based tile adhesives, screeds, and renders
  • Fast drying – enabling efficient construction workflows

Surface Preparation Requirements

Before applying Nitoproof 410, surfaces must be:

  • Clean, sound, stable, and free of loose foreign material
  • Free of existing coatings, laitance, release agents, and curing compounds
  • Free of oil/grease residues and any contaminants
  • Moisture tested using a Tramex CMEX5 meter with moisture content not exceeding 5%

Rendered surfaces must be allowed to cure for at least 16 hours in normal ambient conditions with a wood float finish.

Priming Requirements

Prior to Nitoproof 410 application, appropriate primers must be selected based on substrate type:

  • Porous Masonry Surfaces: Nitoprime 120 at approximately 7m²/L or Nitoproof 510 at 5m²/L (robust option)
  • Non-Porous Substrates: Nitoprime 115 at approximately 12m²/L
  • Submerged Applications: Sand/cement slurry primer with Nitobond SBR

UV Stability and Overcoating

Nitoproof 410 is not UV stable and must be:

  • Cured for a minimum of 24 hours at 25°C before placing protection
  • Protected by cementitious screed or protection board if subjected to traffic or backfilling
  • Overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV to become foot trafficable and UV stable for exposed roof applications
  • Overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat EW for enhanced slip resistance

Tiling Requirements

  • Tiling can commence approximately 24 hours after the final Nitoproof 410 coat
  • Use polymer-modified cement-based tile adhesive such as Fosroc Nitotile Plus
  • Nitobond SBR is recommended for cement-based screeds or renders applied directly over the membrane
  • Tiling should commence within 5 days of application

Limitations and Restrictions

  • Do not apply in temperatures above 35°C or below 5°C
  • Cannot be used in areas where negative hydrostatic pressure is evident
  • Application temperature consideration: Always refer to surface temperature conditions, not just ambient temperatures
  • Not suitable for long-term exposed use without protective overcoating

Cleaning and Maintenance

  • Wet state: Can be cleaned from tools and equipment using water
  • Hardened material: Requires mechanical removal
  • Splashes: Should be wiped off immediately using a cloth dampened with strong detergent solution
  • Equipment: Should be soaked in strong detergent solution immediately after application
