Nitoproof Top Coat UV: Technical Details, Specifications, Features, and Entities

Product Overview

Nitoproof Top Coat UV is a water-based acrylic hybrid membrane top coat designed specifically for UV-exposed applications on horizontal surfaces. This product replaces the earlier formulation known as Emer-Proof Top Coat UV Protect and serves as a specialized protective overcoating system when applied over base membranes such as Nitoproof 410 and Nitoproof 810.

Primary Functions and Applications

Key Uses

Nitoproof Top Coat UV is engineered for the following applications:

  • Roof areas when used with a base membrane layer of either Nitoproof 410 or Nitoproof 810
  • Exposed walkways subject to regular foot traffic
  • Maintenance walkways subject to foot traffic
  • Deck and balcony areas requiring foot trafficability
  • Exposed roof surfaces for maintenance and access areas
  • General horizontal surfaces exposed to weather

The primary function of Nitoproof Top Coat UV is to make underlying membranes foot-trafficable while providing essential UV stability to protect against ultraviolet degradation. This makes it particularly suitable for applications on exposed rooftops and balcony decks where membranes are subject to both foot traffic and direct sun exposure.

Distinctive Advantages

Nitoproof Top Coat UV offers a comprehensive range of performance benefits:

  • Highly durable and foot trafficable surface suitable for pedestrian and light traffic
  • UV weather resistance providing long-term protection against ultraviolet exposure
  • Excellent ponding water resistance for areas subject to water accumulation
  • Resistant to fungi and algae growth, maintaining surface integrity over time
  • Provides slip resistant surface without requiring sand casting or aggregate addition
  • Excellent weathering properties ensuring durability against environmental exposure
  • Water-based and non-hazardous formulation for safe application
  • Flexible (not elastomeric) membrane structure
  • Excellent adhesion to Nitoproof 410 and Nitoproof 810 water-based membranes and primed masonry surfaces
  • Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) content for environmental compliance

Slip Resistance Performance

Nitoproof Top Coat UV has been rigorously tested for slip resistance using standardized testing methodologies. The following results were achieved in controlled laboratory conditions:

System Configuration AS 4586:2013 Appendix A (Wet Pendulum Test) AS 4586:2013 Appendix B (Dry Floor Friction Test)
Nitoproof 410 overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV P5 D1
Nitoproof 410 overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV + Nitoproof Top Coat EW P4 D1
Nitoproof 810 overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV P5 D1
Nitoproof 810 overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV + Nitoproof Top Coat EW P4 D1

Note: Site-specific conditions and variances in application may produce reasonable variations from controlled laboratory results. Application of the proposed system on a small test area on site prior to commencement of works is highly recommended to confirm actual slip resistance.

Drying and Curing Times

The following drying times apply at 23°C and 50% relative humidity:

  • Recoat Time: 4 hours
  • Dry Film Development: 24 hours
  • Weatherproof (Horizontal Applications): 48 hours
  • At 10°C: Allow a minimum of 24 hours extra drying time on standard recommendations

Important Requirement: The base membrane must be fully cured prior to Nitoproof Top Coat UV application.

Application Instructions

Surface Preparation

Surfaces must be clean, sound, stable, and free of:

  • Loose foreign material
  • Existing coatings
  • Laitance
  • Release agents
  • Curing compounds
  • Oil and grease residues

Surfaces must be dry, suitably prepared, and in a sound state prior to application.

Priming Requirements

For application directly onto surfaces without a Nitoproof membrane previously applied, Fosroc recommends always priming the substrate prior to Nitoproof Top Coat UV application.

No priming is required if applied directly onto either:

  • Nitoproof 410 membranes
  • Nitoproof 810 membranes

However, surfaces must be clean and dry in these cases.

Primer Selection (When Required)

  • For porous masonry surfaces: Nitoprime 120 may be selected
  • For non-porous substrates (such as ceramic tile, metals, and plastics): Nitoprime 115 may be selected

Application Method

Nitoproof Top Coat UV membrane should be well stirred before use, then applied to prepared surfaces using:

  • 12mm nap roller or
  • Brush

Apply in 1 coat application at a minimum total coverage of:

  • 0.8 litres/m² for horizontal surfaces
  • 0.6 litres/m² for vertical upturns and returns

Limitations and Restrictions

  • Not designed for use as an exposed membrane under vehicular traffic or in commercial foot traffic areas (such as shopping centre entry-ways)
  • Not designed for immersed applications
  • Not recommended for surfaces subject to heavy commercial traffic
  • Roof applications: Must be applied to surfaces with appropriate falls and drainage

Enhancement with Nitoproof Top Coat EW

Nitoproof Top Coat EW is a hybrid acrylic coating designed for use over Nitoproof Top Coat UV to:

  • Improve stain resistance
  • Reduce scuff marks associated with pedestrian foot traffic
  • Enhance durability and weathering properties

When Nitoproof Top Coat EW is applied, Nitoproof Top Coat UV must be left to dry for a minimum of 48 hours @ 23°C before application takes place.

Cleaning and Maintenance

During Application

While in a wet state, Nitoproof Top Coat UV will clean up with water.

After Drying

Once dried, the product requires removal by:

  • Mechanical means, or
  • Solvent cleaners

Splashes of the water-based membrane on paintwork should be wiped off immediately using a cloth dampened with a strong detergent solution.

Supply and Coverage Information

Product Supply

  • Nitoproof Top Coat UV (Grey): 15 litre
  • Product Code: FC000606-15L

Coverage Specifications

  • Horizontal applications: 0.8 litres/m²
  • Vertical applications: 0.6 litres/m²

Storage and Shelf Life

Nitoproof Top Coat UV has a shelf life of 2 years if kept in cool, dry conditions in the original, unopened packs. Storage at high temperatures and/or high humidity conditions may reduce the shelf life.

Temperature Considerations

Application of all liquid-applied membranes and primers should always refer to surface temperature conditions before commencing and not just ambient temperatures. There are limitations to how hot or cold the surface temperature can be when applying liquid-based membranes or primers.

Example: Ambient temperature may be 10°C but the substrate could be 0°C with frost issues. Similarly, ambient temperature may be 26°C but substrate temperature could be 36°C.

System Integration

Compatibility with Base Membranes

Nitoproof Top Coat UV exhibits excellent adhesion to:

  • Nitoproof 410 water-based membrane systems
  • Nitoproof 810 water-based membrane systems
  • Primed masonry surfaces

Two-Coat System Advantages

When Nitoproof Top Coat UV is applied over Nitoproof 410 or Nitoproof 810, the resulting multi-coat system provides:

  • Comprehensive UV protection
  • Extended membrane durability
  • Foot-trafficable surfaces
  • Slip-resistant properties
  • Long-term weathering resistance
