Product Intelligence
Nitoproof 510: Water-Based Epoxy Moisture Barrier Coating
Product Overview
Nitoproof 510 is a grey, two-component, water-based epoxy primer coating system manufactured by Fosroc. It is specifically engineered as a heavy-duty moisture barrier and preparatory coating for highly absorbent and pitted concrete and masonry substrates.
Composition and Components
Nitoproof 510 is supplied as a two-part system in 20-litre packs:
- Part A (FC000625-10L): 10-litre white liquid component (Base)
- Part B (FC000626-10L): 10-litre grey liquid component (Hardener)
The components must be mixed in equal parts by volume or weight before application.
Key Features and Advantages
Nitoproof 510 offers several distinctive characteristics:
- Solvent-Free Formulation: Contains no organic solvents, making it environmentally friendly
- Very Low VOC Emission: VOC content of less than 5g/litre
- Water-Based: Easy cleanup using water; no odour or volatile emissions
- Anti-microbial Formulation: Provides built-in protection against microbial growth
- Compatible with Damp Substrates: Can be applied to surfaces with some moisture content
- Excellent Adhesion: Bonds tenaciously to concrete, brick, masonry, block, compressed fibre board, stone, and timber
- Readily Sanded: Surfaces can be sanded if required for subsequent applications

Coverage Rates and Application Specifications
As a Moisture Barrier (Two-Coat Application)
- Coverage Rate: 5 square metres per litre per coat (undiluted)
- Minimum Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 200 micrometres
- Total Coverage: 0.4 litre/m² (two coats)
- Application Method: Squeegee and roller finish
As a Primer for Nitoproof Waterproofing Membranes (Single Coat)
- Coverage Rate: 5 m²/litre (undiluted)
- Minimum Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 100 micrometres
- Total Coverage: 0.2 litre/m² (single coat)
Note: Coverage rates are dependent upon substrate porosity; final dry film build achieved may vary.
Applications
Nitoproof 510 serves multiple functions within waterproofing systems:
- Moisture Barrier Coating: Restricts passage of dampness through concrete and masonry substrates in interior faces of walls, floors, basements, tunnels, cellars, retaining walls, lift wells, and underground car parks
- Heavy-Duty Primer: Robust alternative to Nitoprime 120 for sealing and preparing highly absorbent, pitted concrete and masonry surfaces and surfaces with blow holes
- Pre-treatment for Waterproofing Membranes: Applied as a primer before Nitoproof waterproofing membranes including Nitoproof 310, Nitoproof 410, Nitoproof 810, and Nitoproof 910
- Bitumen Isolation: Isolates bituminous surfaces in waterproofing applications
- Moisture Barrier for Porous Substrates: Prepares substrates for superior adhesion and performance of overlying waterproofing systems
Application Instructions
Surface Preparation
Essential surface preparation must be completed before application:
- All surfaces must be sound, clean, and free of previous coatings, grease, oil, dirt, adhesives, laitance, and other surface contamination
- Moisture content must not exceed 5% when tested using a Tramex CMEX5 moisture meter for primer applications
- Holes and non-structural cracks should be repaired with appropriate repair mortar
- Very dry and highly porous surfaces should be sprayed with a fine mist of water prior to application of the first coat
Mixing Procedure
The component mixing procedure is critical for proper performance:
- Individually mix each component (Base and Hardener) to a homogeneous state
- Change the mixing paddle before mixing the second component
- Combine equal parts (1:1 by volume) of Base and Hardener
- Mix for 3 minutes using a slow-speed power stirrer until uniform, avoiding aeration
- Allow the mixed product to stand for five minutes before application
Application Method
- Spread the material using a suitable squeegee or stiff nylon broom, working Nitoproof 510 into the surface to ensure total absorption into pin holes and voids
- Finish using a medium to long nap roller
- Spray application is also acceptable; if spray applying the first coat, add 10% water to assist spraying and penetration
- Minimum wet film thickness: 200 micrometres per coat (checked using a Wet Film Thickness gauge)
Recoating
- Subsequent coats can be applied after 3 to 4 hours cure at 25°C/50% RH
- Minimum interval between coats: 3 hours (temperature dependent)
- Maximum application interval: Subsequent products must be applied within 3 days of the last coat application
Curing and Temperature Characteristics
Optimal Temperature Range
Nitoproof 510 exhibits optimum curing and application characteristics between 15-25°C. Outside this range, performance is affected:
- Below 15°C: Rate of cure slows considerably
- Above 25°C: Working life of mixed composition is reduced
Curing Timeline
- Foot Traffic Ready: Next day at room temperature
- Hard Cure: 24 hours @ 25°C
- Complete Cure: 7 days @ 25°C
Environmental Limitations
- Minimum Application Temperature: 5°C; components should be stored in temperature-controlled environment for 12 hours before use below 10°C
- Maximum Ambient Temperature: Above 30°C, material should be stored in shade or air-conditioned environment for 12 hours before use
- Humidity Limitation: Cure rates are dramatically slowed if relative humidity exceeds 85%
- General Recommendation: Water-based coatings should not be used under combined conditions of low temperature and high humidity
Storage and Shelf Life
- Shelf Life: 24 months from date of manufacture
- Storage Conditions: Keep in dry store in original, unopened packaging
- Temperature Range: 5-30°C
- Protection: Must be protected from frost
Compatibility Information
Important: The current Nitoproof 510 formulation is NOT compatible with previous formulations:
- Previous Part A (FC000610-10L) - NOT compatible
- Previous Part B (FC000611-10L) - NOT compatible
Components from different formulations must never be mixed.
Performance Characteristics
When applied at 200 micrometres dry film thickness, Nitoproof 510 provides:
- Hydrostatic Pressure Resistance: Withstands positive head of water pressure up to 25 metres / up to 250 kPa
- Tenacious Bonding: Creates strongly bonded coating controlling transmission of liquid moisture
- Film Build: Provides uniform theoretical dry film thickness dependent on substrate porosity
- Moisture Control: Effectively restricts passage of dampness while allowing water vapour escape in certain applications
Safety and Documentation
- A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is available from the Fosroc website and must be read prior to use
- A Technical Data Sheet (TDS) provides comprehensive product knowledge and application instructions
- In emergencies, contact any Poisons Information Centre (phone 13 11 26 within Australia) or a doctor for advice
