Nitoseal PU250 - High Performance Polyurethane Joint Sealant
Overview
Nitoseal PU250 is a high performance elastomeric joint sealant based on polyurethane technology. It is specifically designed for vertical interior and exterior applications where durable, flexible sealing is required. When cured through exposure to atmospheric moisture, Nitoseal PU250 forms a waterproof and durable seal, making it ideal for exterior applications and exposed joint conditions.
Primary Uses
Nitoseal PU250 is suitable for sealing joints in a wide variety of construction materials and applications, including:
- Concrete panels and precast concrete structures
- Fibrous cement products
- External cladding panels
- Blockwork and brickwork
- Aluminium and timber door and window frames
- Metal structures and assemblies
- Movement joints in metal or concrete water tanks
- Joints around ceramic surfaces
Key Advantages
Nitoseal PU250 offers numerous performance benefits:
- Excellent primerless adhesion to concrete, timber, masonry, bricks, aluminium, metal, and ceramics
- Low stringing characteristics for clean application
- Low odour formulation
- Weather resistant with proven durability in exterior conditions
- Easy to gun out using standard sealant application equipment
- Suitable for contact with drinking water, enabling use in potable water applications
- Waterproof seal upon full cure for maximum protection

Design Criteria
Nitoseal PU250 is engineered for sealing movement joints between 10mm and 35mm wide. However, under suitable conditions, joints can be sealed down to 5mm and up to 50mm in width.
The sealant width-to-depth ratio should be maintained at:
- Minimum 10mm depth for joint widths between 10mm and 20mm
- 2:1 ratio (width to depth) for joint widths greater than 20mm
Standards Compliance
Nitoseal PU250 has been tested to comply with AS4020:2018 Australian standards specification. Copies of the compliance report (AWQC Report 339139) are available on the Fosroc website.
Application Instructions
Surface Preparation
Joint surfaces must be thoroughly prepared before sealant application:
- Ensure surfaces are thoroughly dry, clean, and frost-free
- Remove all dirt, laitance, loose materials, and foreign matter
- Remove all rust, scale, and protective lacquers from metal surfaces
- Degrease non-porous surfaces using Fosroc Solvent 10
- Use a bond breaker in all joints to prevent sealant contact with the back of the joint and allow optimum performance
For shallow joints, use self-adhesive polyethylene bond breaker tape. For deep joints, incorporate a backing strip such as Expandafoam Backing Rod or Hydrocell to support the sealant while acting as a bond breaker.
Priming Requirements
Good adhesion can be achieved to clean, dry, uncontaminated concrete, timber, metals, ceramics, brickwork, and most coating surfaces without primers. However:
- Primer 21 provides optimum adhesion to concrete and other porous materials
- Primer 13 must be used on concrete in applications subject to semi-permanent or long-term water immersion
- For non-porous materials (aluminium, stainless steel, galvanized metals), consult Fosroc for specific advice
Application Process
- Gun Loading: Load the sausage into a suitable 600ml sealant gun, cut a slit in the top, replace the end cap and nozzle
- Extrusion: Extrude the sealant firmly into the joint to ensure complete contact with joint faces
- Finishing: Smooth the finish if necessary with a suitable spatula
- Caution: Do not spray detergent solution on the sealant surface as this will promote surface blisters
Cleaning
Clean tools immediately after use with Fosroc Solvent 10 to prevent sealant hardening on application equipment.
Limitations
Bituminous Surfaces
Do not apply Nitoseal PU250 to bituminous surfaces nor allow bitumen to contact the sealant. Nitoseal MB175 is recommended as the alternative for these applications.
Paintability Restrictions
Although polyurethane sealants generally accept painting with acrylic coatings, plasticizers may migrate over time and stain the paint surface. Fosroc does not recommend painting over Nitoseal PU250 and recommends using Nitoseal MS250 for applications where painting is required.
