Product Intelligence

Nitoseal MB180: Rubberised Bitumen Mastic Joint Sealant

Product Overview

Nitoseal MB180 is a solvent-based plasto-elastic bituminous sealant reinforced by fibres, specifically designed for sealing and repairs on bituminous surfaces. It is supplied in 600ml sausages and manufactured by Fosroc, making it an ideal solution for waterproof sealing applications in construction and maintenance work.

Key Features and Advantages

Nitoseal MB180 offers several distinctive characteristics that make it suitable for demanding sealing applications:

  • Compatible adhesion to concrete, timber, and steel surfaces
  • Compatible with asphalt or bituminous surfaces, ensuring effective bonding with bitumen-based membranes
  • Can be applied under humid conditions, providing flexibility in application timing
  • Thixotropic formulation – won't drip, flow, or spill, ensuring controlled application
  • Remains flexible after curing, allowing accommodation of minor substrate movement
  • Resistant to moisture, providing long-term durability in exposed conditions

Primary Uses

Nitoseal MB180 is specifically designed for the following applications:

  • Waterproof sealing of joints between building components
  • Sealing seams in structural assemblies
  • Sealing ventilation tubes and drainpipes
  • Sealing terminations of bitumen-based waterproofing membranes
  • Adhesive applications for synthetic materials, tiles, concrete, rubber, and insulating panels

Application Instructions

Joint Preparation

Proper surface preparation is essential for optimal performance:

  • Ensure joint surfaces are completely dry, clean, and frost-free
  • Joint backing must also be dry
  • Remove all dirt, dust, laitance, and loose material by vigorous wire brushing
  • Remove rust, scale, and loose surface coatings from metal surfaces
  • Remove any oil or grease with Fosroc Solvent 10
  • For neat joint finishes, cover joint face edges with masking tape before application and remove immediately after completion

Priming Requirements

  • Non-moving joints normally do not require primer application
  • Excessively porous or friable surfaces may need priming with Fosroc Primer 24
  • Metal surfaces should be cleaned using Fosroc Solvent 10
  • Ferrous metals should be treated with an anti-corrosion primer

Application Method

  • Apply by gun or trowel
  • Cut nozzle to required length and angle; puncture sausage membrane when loading
  • Hold gun firmly against joint at approximately 45° angle
  • Guide nozzle along joint gradually, ensuring good contact with joint surfaces
  • Use steady pressure; never pump trigger hard
  • Wipe nozzle occasionally to ensure clean extrusion
  • Tool to a slightly concave surface with a wooden spatula moistened with White Spirits or similar solvent after application

Usage Coverage Guide

One 600ml sausage provides the following coverage for standard joint sizes:

Joint Size (Width x Depth mm) Length of Joint Sealed (metres)
10 x 20 3.0
15 x 15 2.6
15 x 20 2.0
20 x 20 1.5
20 x 25 1.2
20 x 30 1.0
25 x 25 1.0

Storage and Shelf Life

  • Store in original, unopened packaging
  • Store between 5°C and 30°C
  • Protect from direct sunlight and moisture
  • Maintain dry storage conditions

Clean-Up and Maintenance

  • Remove immediately from equipment after use with Fosroc Solvent 10 or White Spirits
  • Do not use solvents directly on hands; use suitable proprietary skin cleaner
  • Clean tools promptly to prevent hardening

Limitations and Restrictions

Nitoseal MB180 has specific limitations that should be observed:

  • Not suitable for permanent water immersion applications
  • Should not be used in closed tanks where poor ventilation will inhibit solvent evaporation
  • Not suitable for trafficked surfaces – wide joints are liable to mechanical damage
  • Not recommended for high-movement joints where significant structural movement is anticipated

Product Supply and Ordering

Nitoseal MB180 is supplied in standardized packaging:

  • 600ml sausages in cartons of 12
  • Product Code: FC900223-600ML
  • Fosroc Solvent 10 available in 4 and 20 litre drums

Safety Information

A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is available from the Fosroc website. Users are advised to read both the SDS and Technical Data Sheet carefully prior to use, as application or performance data may change from time to time. In emergency situations, contact any Poisons Information Centre (phone 13 11 26 within Australia) or a doctor for advice.
