Nitoflor Sicaltop: Silicon Carbide Floor Hardener Technical Details

Product Overview

Nitoflor Sicaltop is a factory-blended powder floor hardener designed to provide durable, hard-wearing surfaces on concrete floors. The product is composed of silicon carbide and alumina-based aggregates, Portland cement, and special additives, creating a monolithic bond with the base concrete when applied by the shake-on method to freshly laid concrete slabs.

Key Features and Advantages

Durability and Wear Resistance

Nitoflor Sicaltop delivers exceptional durability characteristics that significantly exceed standard concrete floors. The product provides:

  • Greater than 200% improvement in abrasion resistance compared to untreated concrete floors across the recommended dosage range, as demonstrated by testing performed by the Australian Mineral Development Laboratories
  • Extremely strong, hard-wearing, and impact-resistant surface suitable for the heaviest traffic conditions
  • Non-metallic, chemically inert aggregate that does not rust

Slip Resistance Properties

The silicon carbide content provides outstanding non-slip characteristics:

  • Maximum slip resistance that increases with use as the concrete surface wears
  • Slip resistance remains effective when wet, making it suitable for demanding environments
  • Provides a pleasant black speckling and glittering sparkle on the finished surface

Environmental and Health Considerations

  • RCS (Respirable Crystalline Silica) Hazard Free – classified as not hazardous for RCS in accordance with Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals, containing less than 0.1% RCS
  • Non-staining aggregate
  • Chemically resistant composition

Compressive Strength

Tests to BS 1881 Part 4-1970 indicate that Nitoflor Sicaltop achieves a compressive strength of approximately 95 MPa at 28 days.

Water Permeability

Simulated permeability tests under pressures of up to 340 kPa demonstrated a significant reduction in water permeation, providing enhanced protection against moisture ingress.

Application Details

Suitable Applications

Nitoflor Sicaltop is ideally suited for industrial areas subject to the heaviest traffic, including:

  • Loading bays and trucking lanes
  • Car parks and warehouse floors
  • Repair workshops and machine shops
  • Fire escapes, stairways, and entrances
  • Loading ramps and machine surrounds
  • Manufacturing facility floors

Application Method

The product is applied by the shake-on method to freshly laid concrete slabs:

  1. After floating the surface, but before the concrete has stiffened excessively, sprinkle Nitoflor Sicaltop by hand
  2. Allow grains to sift through fingers for uniform distribution
  3. Tamp grains flush with the surface using a steel trowel
  4. Close over the surface by steel trowel finishing
  5. Texture the surface using a steel trowel on the flat to produce the slip-resistant finish
  6. Apply a suitable curing compound or keep damp with wet hessian

Application Rates and Coverage

Traffic Conditions Dosage (kg/m²) Coverage (m² per 20kg bag)
Light traffic 2.0 10.0
Medium traffic 3.0 6.7
Heavy traffic 4.0 5.0

Note: Coverage figures are theoretical; practical coverage may be reduced due to wastage factors and substrate variations.

Supply and Storage

Product Supply

  • Nitoflor Sicaltop Grey 20kg: Product code FC602040-20KG
  • Available in natural concrete grey color

Storage Requirements

  • Shelf life: 18 months if stored in original, undamaged packaging
  • Store in dry conditions
  • Do not use if lumps are present in the product
  • Shelf life may be reduced if stored in high temperature and high humidity locations

Limitations

As an integral floor hardener, Nitoflor Sicaltop is not suitable for use with post-tensioned slabs.

Performance Benefits Summary

Nitoflor Sicaltop delivers:

  • Monolithic bonding with base concrete for seamless integration
  • Economical application compared to alternative surface hardening methods
  • Reduced placing time by up to 20% compared to site-batched materials due to workability additives
  • Full hydration and compaction of the shake-on wearing course
  • Enhanced aesthetics with black speckling and glittering sparkle effect
  • Long-term durability with slip resistance that improves with traffic wear
