Nitoflor FC130: Water-Based Epoxy Floor Coating

Overview

Nitoflor FC130 is a two-component water dispersed epoxy resin coating system manufactured by Fosroc. It is supplied in pre-weighed packs that are mixed on-site for use, delivering an economical, chemical-resistant solution for protective flooring applications. The product forms a resilient, semi-matt seal to concrete and other substrates.

Key Features

Formulation & Composition

Nitoflor FC130 is formulated as a water-based epoxy system, which provides several advantages:

  • Low odour characteristic due to water-based formulation
  • Contains two components: a colour base and a hardener
  • Supplied in pre-weighed packs ready for on-site mixing
  • Available in multiple colour variants: Silver Grey, Mid Grey, and Clear
  • Pigmented formulation to enhance aesthetic appeal and performance

Application & Coverage

The product is designed for application in two coats to achieve an approximate total dry film thickness of 100 microns. Additional coats may be required in high-traffic areas.

Coverage Rates:

  • First coat: 6 - 8 m² per litre
  • Second coat: 8 - 10 m² per litre

Note: Practical coverage figures will be reduced due to wastage factors and substrate variations.

Substrates & Applications

Suitable Substrates

Nitoflor FC130 is specifically formulated for application on:

  • Concrete floors (new and old)
  • Asphalt surfaces (minimum 3 months old)
  • Sound, clean, dry substrates

Typical Uses

The product is designed to provide:

  • Dust-proof surface resistant to most oils and liquids
  • Easy cleaning capability for maintenance
  • Chemical resistance across a wide range of industrial chemicals
  • Suitable for use in warehouses, garages, light industrial facilities, food processing areas, kitchens, and pedestrian and light vehicular traffic areas

Colour & Appearance

Nitoflor FC130 is available in three distinct colour options:

  • Silver Grey (LRV: 61.27%)
  • Mid Grey (LRV: 41.98%)
  • Clear

Note: Light Reflectance Value (LRV) measured according to BS 8493:2008

Slip Resistance

When applied without additional grit, Nitoflor FC130 achieves the following slip resistance ratings according to AS/NZS 4586:2013:

  • Wet Pendulum Test: P4
  • Dry Floor Friction Test: D1

Slip resistance can be enhanced by broadcasting fine quartz sand (0.25mm) into the second coat while wet, then sealing with a third coat.

Chemical Resistance

Nitoflor FC130 is resistant to a wide range of chemicals. Specific resistance data is available on request. The product provides:

  • Good housekeeping is essential in areas where chemical spillage is likely
  • Important that spillage should not be allowed to dry (prevents higher chemical concentration buildup)

Product Codes & Supply

Nitoflor FC130 is supplied in 16 litre 2-component packs:

Product Product Code
Clear Hardener FC612181-13.1L
Clear Base FC612182-2.9L
Silver Grey Hardener FC612183-13L
Mid Grey Hardener FC612196-13L
Colour Base FC612184-3L

Storage & Handling

  • Store in dry conditions between 10°C and 30°C
  • Protect from frost
  • If stored at high temperatures, shelf life may be reduced
  • Keep in original unopened packaging

Important Safety Considerations

Critical Application Notes

  1. Water Evaporation: As a water-based material, complete water evaporation is essential during curing. Mixed product may appear usable after pot life expires but will not cure correctly and will remain tacky on the floor.

  2. Pot Life Management: After pot life has expired, excess material should be discarded. Mixed product should be poured into flat, open paint trays to maximize working time. Holding in original mixing cans leads to exothermic reactions reducing pot life.

  3. Drying Conditions: Good drying conditions are required to allow complete evaporation of water as the resin cures. Adequate ventilation and air movement is necessary.

  4. Temperature & Humidity Restrictions:

    • Do not apply below 10°C
    • Do not apply where ambient relative humidity exceeds 85%
    • Do not apply to substrates with relative humidity greater than 80%
    • Do not apply to substrates with rising damp
  5. Tainting Characteristics: The low odour characteristics do not necessarily indicate non-tainting properties. For food processing applications, separate tests are recommended to verify non-tainting potential.

Surface Preparation Requirements

  • Sound, clean, dry substrates are essential for maximum adhesion
  • New concrete: Minimum 7 days old; dry removal of laitance by light grit-blasting or diamond grinding preferred
  • Old concrete: Light grit blasting or acid etching; may require hot compressed air treatment for oil/grease contamination
  • Asphalt surfaces: Must be 3+ months old; scrubbed with detergent solution and dried before application

Advantages

  • Durable - good resistance to abrasion
  • Economical - easy to apply, minimises cleaning costs
  • Water based - low odour characteristics
  • Chemical resistant - good resistance to wide range of chemicals
  • Versatile - can be applied to asphalt surfaces as well as concrete
  • Semi-matt finish - attractive appearance with low maintenance

Limitations

  • Reduced service life in areas of very heavy traffic (car park lanes, around work benches, etc.)
  • For high-traffic areas, consider additional coats or higher-build systems (Nitoflor FC150HP)
  • Semi-matt finish may scuff more than gloss finishes, though marks can usually be removed with detergent scrub
  • Use only components with identical batch numbers in one application area for uniform colour
  • Rising damp or excessive humidity will prevent proper curing
