Nitoflor PA - Solvent Free Polyaspartic Floor Coating

Overview

Nitoflor PA is a high-performance, two-component solvent-free polyaspartic semi-gloss coating designed for protective floor applications. Manufactured and supplied by Fosroc, it serves as an ultraviolet (UV) and abrasion-resistant topcoat for resin floor systems or as a standalone coating over correctly prepared concrete substrates.

Key Features and Advantages

Nitoflor PA offers several significant performance benefits:

  • Abrasion Resistant: Protects against mechanical wear in high-traffic environments
  • UV Resistant: Prevents ultraviolet light degradation of the coating
  • Chemical Resistant: Resistant to many common industrial chemicals
  • Solvent Free: Eliminates volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the formulation, reducing environmental impact and improving worker safety
  • Convenient 1:1 Mix Ratio: Mixed by volume, simplifying on-site preparation
  • Fast Cure: Enables rapid project turnaround times
  • HACCP Certified: Approved for use in food handling areas (Splash or Spill Zone)

Application Coverage

The coverage rate for Nitoflor PA is 5 to 12.5 m²/litre on concrete per coat, depending on application conditions. Coverage figures are theoretical and may be reduced due to wastage factors and substrate variability.

Suitable Application Substrates

Nitoflor PA can be applied to multiple flooring substrates:

  • Concrete floors: Requires proper surface preparation with moisture content not exceeding 5%
  • Epoxy resin screeds: Overcoating between 24-48 hours @ 23°C
  • Polyurethane screeds: Overcoating between 24-48 hours @ 23°C
  • Nitoflor FC150HP: Resin floor system substrates
  • Nitoflor PU600: Polyurethane cement flooring systems
  • Epoxy and flake flooring systems: Nitoflor PA Clear variant available for these applications

Color Options and Supply

Nitoflor PA is available in 8 colors including Clear, enabling customization to match specific design or branding requirements. The product is supplied in two-component kits with flexible sizing options:

Part A - Container Sizes

  • 4 litre containers (clear and various colors)
  • 20 litre containers (clear and colors)

Part B - Container Sizes

  • 4 litre containers (various standard and custom colors)
  • 20 litre containers (various standard and custom colors)

Standard color variants include Pipeline Grey N43, Signal Red R13, Bright Blue B23, Jade G21, Sunflower Y15, Oatmeal Y54, and White.

Surface Preparation Requirements

Proper surface preparation is essential to achieve maximum adhesion. Key preparation steps include:

  • New concrete floors: Minimum 28 days old with moisture content not exceeding 5% (tested using Tramex CMEX5 moisture meter)
  • Laitance removal: Dry removal required via light grit-blasting or grinding
  • Dust removal: Vacuum brush cleaning to remove all debris
  • Oil and grease removal: All contaminants must be removed
  • Epoxy and polyurethane screeds: High spots, trowel marks should be rubbed down; solvent wiping recommended for optimal adhesion

Application Instructions

Mixing

Combine equal parts by volume of Nitoflor PA Part A and Part B, mixing thoroughly using a low-speed heavy-duty electric drill with a suitable spiral mixer for 1 to 1.5 minutes. Typically, 4 litres should be mixed to ensure application within the working life.

Important: Once mixed, the product must be poured in ribbons onto the floor and rolled out immediately. Holding the product in the original mixing can will lead to exothermic reaction, significantly reducing working life.

Application

Apply using 270mm microfibre rollers. During application, roll the roller dry every 10-18 m² to prevent tackiness and extend roller life. Back rolling is essential to ensure even application and eliminate pinholes. A roller cover typically covers 45-90 m² before replacement.

Recoating

The second coat can be applied after the first coat becomes tack-free, approximately 1 hour but no longer than 18 hours after initial application.

Slip Resistance Performance

Nitoflor PA achieves various slip resistance ratings depending on the substrate and aggregate application:

  • On concrete with no aggregate: D1 (dry), P1 (wet)
  • With Nitoflor Anti-Slip Grains 41: D1 (dry), P3 (wet), R10 (oil/wet ramp)
  • On Nitoflor FC150 HP with Anti-Slip Grains 01 or 02: D1 (dry), P5 (wet)
  • On Nitoflor PU600 with Anti-Slip Grains 01: D1 (dry), P5 (wet)

Storage and Shelf Life

Nitoflor PA has a 24-month shelf life when stored in dry conditions in original, unopened packs between 10°C and 30°C.

Ancillary Products

The following ancillary products are supplied for use with Nitoflor PA:

  • Fosroc Solvent 10 (20 litre): Used for cleaning tools and equipment immediately after application
  • Fosroc Solvent 104 (4 litre): Alternative cleaning solvent

Application Limitations and Precautions

Nitoflor PA should not be applied under the following conditions:

  • On surfaces with rising damp or moisture content exceeding 5%
  • When substrate or ambient temperature is outside the 10°C to 30°C range
  • To polymer-modified cementitious screeds such as Cemtop GP Advanced or Cemtop XD
  • On non-UV resistant coatings when using the clear variant, as the underlying coating may discolor under the clear topcoat

Environmental Considerations

While Nitoflor PA is UV resistant, applying the clear coating over non-UV resistant coatings such as epoxies will not prevent the epoxy from fading or discoloring beneath the clear topcoat.

Typical Applications

Nitoflor PA is used in diverse industrial and commercial settings:

  • Food and chemical industries
  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities
  • Schools and educational institutions
  • Kitchens and food preparation areas
  • High-traffic commercial environments
  • Manufacturing facility floors
  • Laboratories requiring chemically resistant surfaces

Standards Compliance

Nitoflor PA complies with AS/ISO 9239.1-2003 Reaction to Fire Tests for Floorings with:

  • Critical Heat Flux (CHF): ≥11.0 kW/m²
  • Smoke Value: 26% minimum

The product holds HACCP certification for use in food handling areas (Splash or Spill Zone applications).
