Nitoflor HD-S System: Low Sheen Liquid Floor Hardener & Densifier

Product Overview

Nitoflor HD-S System is a low sheen liquid floor hardener and densifier specifically designed for concrete floors. Previously known as Duraflor HD-S, this two-component system offers an enhanced appearance with improved stain resistance compared to the standard Nitoflor HD product. It represents a modern formulation engineered to provide durable, easily maintained concrete flooring solutions with defined sheen levels.

System Description

The Nitoflor HD-S System is a two-component system consisting of:

  1. Nitoflor HD - A penetrating lithium silicate treatment applied first
  2. Nitoflor HD-S - Applied as the second component to achieve defined sheen levels and improve stain resistance

Nitoflor HD-S is applied to concrete that has been previously treated with Nitoflor HD. This environmentally friendly system features a VOC content of 33g/litre and provides similar abrasion resistance to Nitoflor HD while delivering improved stain resistance and higher sheen levels.

Key Advantages

  • Enhanced appearance - New improved formulation designed to provide improved visual quality
  • Hardening and dust reduction - Hardens and reduces dusting of concrete surfaces
  • Defined sheen levels - Provides clear, controlled sheen finishes
  • Durability and stain resistance - Offers durable, stain-resistant protection
  • Reduced maintenance - Requires less maintenance compared to untreated concrete
  • Complementary to polished concrete - Can be used as an alternative to or complement diamond grinding processes

Primary Applications

The Nitoflor HD-S System is suitable for:

  • Manufacturing facility floors
  • Warehouse floors
  • Restaurants and retail environments
  • Supermarkets and grocery stores
  • Storage facility floors
  • Any new or existing internal concrete or masonry surface

Technical Specifications

Application Rates

Component Coverage Rate Product Code (5L) Product Code (20L)
Nitoflor HD 7-10 m²/litre FC605105-5L FC605105-20L
Nitoflor HD-S 30-40 m²/litre/coat FC605110-5L FC605110-20L

Coating Requirements

  • Minimum of two coats of Nitoflor HD-S must be applied to achieve the desired sheen level
  • Coverage and consumption rates vary depending on porosity and roughness of concrete
  • Multiple coats may be required to achieve the desired sheen level
  • Application rate may increase on highly polished floors

Application Equipment

  • Low-pressure airless sprayer - Recommended for applying Nitoflor HD-S
  • Low-pressure sprayer or scrubber - Used for Nitoflor HD application
  • 100% polyester micro-fibre applicator - Used to spread Nitoflor HD-S after spraying

Surface Preparation Requirements

For Hardened Concrete

  • Must be sound, clean, and dry concrete
  • Must be free of previous coatings, grease, oil, dirt, adhesives, laitance, and any other surface contamination
  • Thoroughly clean with neutral cleaner followed by fresh water to remove contaminants or surface barriers
  • Surface must be dry before initial Nitoflor HD application

For Freshly Laid Concrete

  • Nitoflor HD can be applied as a stand-alone hardener/densifier to freshly laid concrete
  • Application allowed when there is no free water on surface and concrete is firm enough to walk on
  • Subsequent application of Nitoflor HD-S must be delayed until concrete has cured for 28 days

For Polished Concrete

The system can be used to complement concrete polishing processes:

  • Apply Nitoflor HD-S after hardening and grinding/polishing the concrete
  • Yields improved sheen level and improved stain resistance

Application Instructions

Step 1: Nitoflor HD Application

  1. Agitate Nitoflor HD before use
  2. Apply with low-pressure sprayer or scrubber at approximately 7 to 10 m²/litre
  3. Keep floor wet with material for 20 minutes
  4. Re-mist if any area begins to dry; do not add water
  5. Let surface dry without puddling by brooming product around if necessary
  6. Clean up excess material with a scrubber after material dries
  7. Allow at least 2 hours drying time - surface must be "bone dry" before Nitoflor HD-S application

Step 2: Nitoflor HD-S Application

  1. Agitate Nitoflor HD-S before use
  2. Apply using low-pressure airless sprayer at approximately 30 to 40 m²/litre
  3. Spread out with 100% polyester micro-fibre applicator
  4. Material appears milky when first sprayed but becomes clear when spread with applicator (if too heavy, reapply)
  5. Allow minimum 30 minutes drying between coats
  6. Apply subsequent coats at same application rate, allowing each to completely dry
  7. Apply minimum of two coats of Nitoflor HD-S
  8. Allow at least 1 hour drying after final coat prior to foot traffic

Curing and Exposure

  • Nitoflor HD-S System must be free from contact with water for at least 72 hours at ambient temperature to allow cure time
  • Humidity will delay cure time—reduce humidity using fans
  • After 72 hours, surface can be damp mopped or scrubbed with auto scrubber and neutral cleaner

Maintenance

  • Surface should be regularly cleaned with pH neutral cleaner to achieve optimum performance and longevity
  • Regular maintenance coats of Nitoflor HD-S will help retain floor sheen level
  • Routine cleaning involves using a rotary scrubbing machine with water-miscible cleaning agents at temperatures up to 55°C
  • Potential application of clear sealers or polishes during maintenance

Limitations

  • Will not penetrate curing compounds or other coatings on concrete—these must be removed by mechanical means such as diamond grinding
  • Coverage rates vary depending on porosity and roughness of concrete
  • Stain resistance and sheen level vary depending on porosity and roughness of concrete
  • Liquid hardeners/densifiers work by reacting with Calcium Hydroxide in concrete; if insufficient Calcium Hydroxide is present (from rain-affected or overworked concrete), reaction may not occur adequately
  • These products will not fix bad concrete
  • Final grinding may affect overall floor characteristics; grinding and slip trials recommended where slip is a concern
  • Cannot be applied in below-freezing temperatures
  • Adverse weather conditions or humidity may affect cure time and application rates
