Guncrete E: High Strength Dry-Spray Concrete Repair Mortar

Overview

Guncrete E is a high strength, low shrinkage, high build dry-spray applied repair mortar manufactured by Fosroc. It is supplied as a ready-to-use dry powder specifically formulated for use with standard dry spray gunite or shotcrete equipment. The material is designed for structural repairs to concrete and is made in Australia with no respirable crystalline silica (RCS) hazard.

Key Features and Advantages

Guncrete E delivers multiple performance benefits for concrete repair applications:

  • High build formulation – Enables fewer applications of product, reducing overall project time
  • High strength – Suitable for structural repairs with compressive strength exceeding 45 MPa
  • High early strength – Provides rapid strength development, reducing back-to-service time
  • Low drying shrinkage – Ensures long-term dimensional stability and prevents cracking
  • Low rebound – Minimizes material waste during application
  • Chloride free – Protects embedded steel reinforcement from corrosion
  • RCS Hazard Free – Contains less than 0.1% respirable crystalline silica, classified as non-hazardous under Australian standards
  • Suitable for Galvashield compatibility – Can be used with Galvashield incipient anode protection and cathodic protection systems

Technical Specifications

Compressive Strength

Guncrete E demonstrates excellent strength development measured according to EN 2190:1999 and AS 1478.2 - 2005:

Time Period Compressive Strength
1 day 35 MPa
7 days 60 MPa
28 days 84.0 MPa

The EN 1504 R4 requirement specifies ≥ 45 MPa, which Guncrete E exceeds at all cure stages.

Application Parameters

Design Criteria

Guncrete E is designed for vertical or horizontal applications with the following thickness specifications:

  • Maximum thickness per layer: 150mm for vertical/horizontal applications
  • Overhead applications: 80-100mm thick per layer (depending on substrate geometry)
  • Minimum thickness: 10mm
  • Multiple layers: Thicker sections can be achieved by applying multiple layers

Application Temperature Range

Condition Temperature
Minimum application (static or rising) 5°C
Should not apply (falling temperature) Below 5°C
Maximum ambient temperature 35°C

Primary Applications

Guncrete E is suitable for reinstatement of large concrete repair areas and localized patch repairs in:

  • Sea walls – Subject to aggressive environmental conditions
  • Bridge decks – Structural repair of deck surfaces
  • Piers – Waterfront structural elements
  • Tunnels – Underground concrete structures
  • Sewer pipes – Pipe system repair and rehabilitation

Product Supply

Guncrete E is supplied in 20kg bags with product code FC302060-20KG and a shelf life of 36 months from the date of manufacture when kept in original, unopened bags.

Coverage and Yield

  • Yield: Approximately 10.0 litres per 20kg bag
  • Actual yield per bag: Depends on the consistency used during application

Water Ratio

  • Water:powder ratio: 0.1 (used for obtaining test properties at 20°C)

Curing Requirements

As a cement-based repair mortar, Guncrete E must be cured immediately after finishing in accordance with good concrete practice. Recommended curing methods include:

  • Concure A99 – Sprayed as a continuous film on finished surface
  • Nitobond AR – Alternative curing membrane
  • Additional protection – Polythene sheeting taped at edges in fast-drying conditions
  • Cold weather protection – Protection from freezing in cold conditions

Large repair areas should be cured progressively (0.5m² at a time) without waiting for completion of the entire area.

Storage

Guncrete E requires proper storage to maintain product quality:

  • Shelf life: 36 months from date of manufacture
  • Storage conditions: Original, unopened bags in dry storage
  • Do not use if: Lumps are present in the product or loss of workability occurs (requiring additional water)
