Nitomortar AP - Multi-Purpose Epoxy Adhesive Repair Paste

Overview

Nitomortar AP is a two-component epoxy adhesive repair paste manufactured by Fosroc, designed as a versatile bonding and sealing material for multiple construction and concrete repair applications. The product consists of a white resin base component and a black curing agent hardener component that are mixed together to form a grey compound suitable for various bonding and patching requirements.

Key Specifications

Composition and Form

Nitomortar AP is supplied as a two-part epoxy resin-based adhesive system with the following characteristics:

  • Base Component: White resin
  • Hardener Component: Black curing agent
  • Mixed Form: Grey compound
  • Consistency: Putty-like adhesive paste suitable for application with spreader, putty knife, trowel, or caulking gun

Shelf Life and Storage

  • Shelf Life: 6 months from date of manufacture when stored in dry conditions in original, unopened packaging
  • Storage Conditions: Store in dry conditions out of direct sunlight at temperatures between 5°C and 30°C
  • Note: Shelf life may be reduced when stored at high temperatures and/or high humidity conditions

Application Temperature Range

  • Minimum: 5°C (should not be applied when temperature is below 5°C or is 5°C and falling)
  • Maximum: 35°C

Curing and Working Times

  • Pot Life: 60 minutes at 25°C (for 3-litre mix)
  • Initial Hardness: 5 hours at 20°C
  • Full Cure: 7 days at 20°C
  • Cure Time Before Additional Layers: Minimum 5 hours and maximum 48 hours before applying additional adhesive layers or further construction
  • Specific Gravity (Mixed): 1.7

Performance Properties

  • Adhesive Bond Strength: Exceeds tensile strength of concrete
  • Chemical Resistance: Unaffected by a wide range of acids, alkalis, and industrial chemicals
  • Abrasion Resistance: Exhibits excellent resistance to abrasion and mechanical wear
  • Coverage Rate: Approximately 0.7 litres per metre (0.35 litres per metre per side with encapsulation at 35mm bonded width)

Primary Applications

Crack Sealing and Injection Systems

Nitomortar AP serves as a critical component within the Nitofill LV crack injection system, functioning to prepare surfaces and flanges prior to resin injection. It is applied to:

  • Bond injection flanges to substrates
  • Seal crack faces
  • Create resin-tight surface seals around flange edges and along cracks before injection of Nitofill LV resin

Bonding Waterproofing Membranes

Nitomortar AP is specifically formulated to bond Expoband F tape (a flexible polyolefine membrane) to concrete substrates and structural materials. The material demonstrates tolerance to damp surface conditions, enabling application where complete surface dryness may be difficult to achieve.

Concrete Surface Repair

The product functions as a repair material for addressing concrete surface imperfections by:

  • Filling blow holes in concrete
  • Repairing honeycombing
  • Filling voids and other surface defects
  • Preparing surfaces before protective coating application

Pre-Coating Preparation

Nitomortar AP is used to repair concrete spalling and imperfections before application of protective coatings such as:

  • Nitocote EP410
  • Nitocote EP405

Patching and Bonding Applications

The product is employed for:

  • Speedy permanent patching repairs to concrete structures
  • Bonding of precast components
  • Emergency repairs in chemical handling areas

Mixing Instructions

Preparation Method:

  1. Transfer the entire contents of the hardener component into the base component can
  2. Mix thoroughly using a slow-speed drill and spiral stirrer for a full 4 minutes
  3. Stop occasionally to scrape the sides of the tub
  4. Mixing is complete when a uniform grey colour is achieved

Important: Do not mix more product than can be used within the pot life window.

Application Method

Surface Preparation:

  • All contact surfaces must be free from oil, grease, free-standing water, and loosely adherent material
  • Surfaces should be clean and dust-free

Application Procedure:

  1. Apply the adhesive onto the substrate using a spreader
  2. Ensure an even spread of adhesive approximately 2mm thick is applied to an area approximately 10-20mm wider than the intended bond area
  3. For Expoband F application, lay the bond face of the tape onto the adhesive and align as required
  4. Press firmly over the full area, ensuring complete contact
  5. Finish along each edge with a small triangular fillet of adhesive
  6. Remove any excess material

Encapsulation Application:

  • Apply masking tape to the centre of Expoband F tape to protect the unbonded area during adhesive application on the top surface
  • Application of adhesive serves to encapsulate the edges as an even, straight-sided epoxy fairing with no epoxy bridging the joint
  • Peel the masking tape immediately after application to produce the desired fairing effect
