Nitocote SN511 - Penetrating Silane Water Repellent Treatment

Nitocote SN511 is a low viscosity, isobutyltriethoxy silane penetrating silane water repellent treatment. It penetrates deeply into porous substrates, reducing absorption of water and water-borne salts while permitting passage of water vapour. Especially suitable for protecting concrete structures in marine and coastal environments. Provides 95% reduction in chloride ion penetration and 80% reduction in water absorption.

Nitocote SN511 - Technical Details, Specifications, Features and Entities

Overview

Nitocote SN511 (previously known as Emer-Stop S100N) is a deeply penetrating, isobutyltriethoxysilane-based water repellant and chloride ion protective treatment manufactured and supplied by Fosroc. It is specifically designed to protect concrete from both water and chloride ingress whilst still permitting water vapour transmission out of the structure, making it especially suitable for protecting concrete structures in marine and coastal environments.

Product Description

Nitocote SN511 is a low viscosity colourless neutral liquid with a >98% active content of monomeric isobutyltriethoxy silane. Due to its low rate of hydrolysis, the active component penetrates deeply into porous substrates, reacting to produce a bonded hydrophobic lining to the pores. Being solvent free, the product is distributed with uniform high concentration practically throughout the entire penetrated area. The treatment is not affected by UV light and does not produce any discolouration of the substrate.

Key Advantages

  • Reduces water and chloride ingress - achieving greater than 95% reduction in chloride ion penetration and greater than 80% reduction in water absorption
  • Deep penetration into porous substrates - enabled by low viscosity and solvent-free formulation
  • Allows water vapour to escape from the structure, preventing moisture build-up
  • Environmentally friendly - solvent free composition
  • Exceptional alkali resistance
  • Reduces the effects of Alkali-Silica reactive aggregates
  • Increases freeze thaw resistance
  • Minimises efflorescence
  • Chemically resistant to ice melting compounds, fuels, oils and atmospheric contaminants

Application Specifications

Application Method

Nitocote SN511 is applied ready for use and must not be applied by brush. The product should be applied by saturation flooding working vertically from the bottom up, which is best achieved by:

  • High volume, low pressure spray (approximately 5-10 psi)
  • Outlet diameter of 5mm
  • Minimising atomisation

For small areas, simple direct application using a watering can or back pack spray may be used.

Application Rates and Coverage

Parameter Specification
Number of Coats Minimum 2 flood coats
Application Rate per Coat 300 ml/m²
Coverage per Coat 3.33 m²/litre (or 2.5 m²/litre total)
Overcoating Time 6 hours minimum between coats
Recommended Spray Pressure Approximately 5 to 10 psi

Surface Appearance Requirements

  • Horizontal surfaces and soffit areas - must have a mirror-like wet look for 5 seconds
  • Vertical surfaces - must have a minimum rundown of 150mm visible with a mirror-like wet look for 5 seconds

Minimum Penetration Requirements

The product must remain in contact with the concrete surface as a liquid film for a few seconds to achieve proper penetration. When spray applied, some loss due to atomisation is unavoidable owing to the high wetting effect and low viscosity, but this is accounted for in the recommended application rate.

Surface Preparation

Surfaces must be:

  • Dry and free from contamination such as oil, grease, loose particles, decayed matter, moss, algal growth, laitance and all traces of mould oils and curing compounds
  • Protected areas include plants, glass, asphalt, bitumen, plastics and all painted surfaces, which must be protected prior to application
  • For tidal zone applications, the application shall not commence until the tide has reached its lowest ebb, with application slowly proceeding the rising tide to allow the longest possible drying period

Chemical Composition

The active component is monomeric isobutyltriethoxy silane, which comprises >98% of Nitocote SN511's active content. This specific chemical form has a low rate of hydrolysis that enables deep penetration due to low viscosity, creating hydrophobic protection within concrete pores.

Limitations and Warnings

  • Hydrolysis with atmospheric moisture - Material from opened containers must be used within 48 hours or discarded
  • Impregnation depth factors - The impregnation depth is influenced by several factors including formulation, humidity, porosity of the concrete, and the level of surface preparation undertaken
  • Hydrostatic pressure - Hydrostatic pressure exceeding 300mm can force water molecules and dissolved chloride ions into the concrete substrate through the silane treatment

Post-Application Testing

During or on completion of works, areas should be marked for depth of penetration testing at a minimum rate of one core per 300m² of treated concrete. Prior to commencement of spraying, test areas should be marked out and core samples should be taken to determine the depth of penetration of applied treatment by water uptake.

Supply Formats

Nitocote SN511 is supplied in the following pack sizes:

Product Product Code
Nitocote SN511 20 litre drum FC855155-20L
Nitocote SN511 200 litre drum FC855155-200L

Cleaning and Removal

Nitocote SN511 should be removed from tools, equipment and mixers using Fosroc Solvent 10 immediately after use.

Storage Conditions

Store in cool, dry conditions, away from sources of heat and naked flames. The product has a shelf life of 3 years if kept in original, unopened packs. Storage at high temperatures and/or high humidity conditions may reduce the shelf life.
