Nitocote SN508 Creme - Technical Details and Specifications

Product Description

Nitocote SN508 Creme (previously known as Emer-Stop Creme) is a deeply impregnating, water-dispersed, thixotropic cream containing iso-octyltriethoxysilane. It functions as a penetrating water repellent and chloride ion protective treatment specifically designed for concrete and masonry substrates.

Key Composition and Properties

Active Ingredient Concentration

The product is distinguished by its exceptionally high active silane content. Nitocote SN508 Creme contains 80% active silane content of Iso-Octyltriethoxysilane, which is unique among other emulsion-type silanes. This high concentration enables maximum penetration depth and superior long-term protection against water and chloride ion ingress.

Physical Properties

Property Value
Specific Gravity 0.9 @ 25°C
Active Component Iso-Octyltriethoxysilane
pH Value 8
VOC Content 9 g/litre

Thixotropic Characteristics

The thixotropic consistency of Nitocote SN508 Creme is a critical performance feature that provides several advantages:

  • Easy application to vertical and overhead surfaces - The thixotropic nature minimizes waste and ensures material remains in place even on vertical or soffit applications
  • Extended contact time - Provides long contact duration of the silane active ingredient with the concrete surface, maximizing penetration depth
  • Visual clarity during application - The highly visible nature of the product allows easy inspection to ensure complete coverage of treated surfaces
  • Minimal sagging - Thixotropic properties prevent the impregnating film from running on vertical or overhead applications

Performance Specifications

Water Absorption Reduction

Nitocote SN508 Creme is designed to reduce capillary water absorption by more than 80%, providing substantial protection against moisture ingress in concrete structures.

Penetration Depth

The tremendous penetration depth achieved by Nitocote SN508 Creme is a function of:

  • The thixotropic consistency ensuring long contact time with concrete surfaces
  • The high concentration of active ingredient (>80%)
  • The quality of the concrete substrate

Typical penetration depths on porous concrete include:

  • 0.25 litres/m² application rate = 2 mm penetration
  • 0.44 litres/m² application rate = 4 mm penetration

Application Details

Recommended Application Method

Airless-spray technique is the best application method for Nitocote SN508 Creme on concrete surfaces. The product is applied undiluted at the required coverage rate.

Application Coverage Rates

Coverage Specification Rate
Per coat 0.25 - 0.44 litres/m²
Coverage ratio 4.00 - 2.25 m²/litre per coat

Generally, only one coat is required, depending on the absorbency of the substrate.

Surface Preparation

Surfaces must be thoroughly prepared before application:

  • Surfaces should be dry and free from contamination such as oil, grease, loose particles, decayed matter, moss, algal growth, laitance, and all traces of mould oils and curing compounds
  • New concrete should cure for at least two weeks, preferably four weeks, before impregnation
  • Cast-insitu and pre-cast concrete should be cleaned using high-pressure water to remove concrete slurry covering the capillaries
  • Only impregnate concrete with uniformly dry surfaces with no damp patches
  • Protect plants, glass, asphalt, bitumen, plastics, and all painted surfaces prior to application

Storage and Shelf Life

  • Shelf life: 24 months if kept in a dry store in original, unopened pails
  • Storage conditions: Store in tightly closed original containers between 0°C and 30°C
  • Opened container limitation: Material from opened containers should be used within 48 hours or discarded due to potential hydrolysis with atmospheric moisture

Advantages

  • Outstanding penetration into concrete substrates
  • Chemically bonds to concrete substrates
  • Optimum resistance to alkalis
  • Drastic reduction in capillary water absorption
  • Low volatility with no application wastage
  • Allows water vapour transmission while providing water repellency
  • Thixotropic consistency enables application to vertical and soffit surfaces even in windy or elevated temperature conditions
  • Easy supervision with clearly visible applied material and easily measured material thickness
  • Water-based, solvent-free, and environmentally friendly

Limitations

  • Not designed for submerged or semi-submerged applications
  • Material may hydrolyse with atmospheric moisture; opened containers must be discarded if not used within 48 hours
  • Penetration depth is influenced by formulation, humidity, concrete porosity, and level of surface preparation undertaken
