Nitocote SN502 - Penetrating Silane/Siloxane Concrete Treatment
Nitocote SN502 is a single-component penetrating silane-siloxane system which significantly reduces the absorption of water and water borne salts, whilst allowing the passage of water vapour out from the substrate. Ideal for protecting atmospherically exposed reinforced concrete structures including those in coastal environments. Reduces water and chloride intrusion, penetrates into porous substrates, non-staining, and provides 92% reduction in chloride ion penetration (NCHRP 244 Standard).

Product Intelligence
Nitocote SN502: Penetrating Silane-Siloxane Concrete Treatment
Product Overview
Nitocote SN502 is an economical, penetrating hydrophobic silane-siloxane treatment formulated to protect atmospherically exposed reinforced concrete structures from chloride ion attack and water intrusion. As a single-component system, it offers clear advantages for both new and existing concrete structures in diverse environments, including coastal and marine applications.
Primary Uses
Nitocote SN502 is designed to protect:
- Reinforced concrete structures from attack by chloride ions and water intrusion
- Cementitious substrates and masonry in atmospherically exposed conditions
- All structure types, including those in coastal environments
- New and existing structures with equal effectiveness
Key Advantages
The product delivers multiple protective benefits:
- Reduces water and chloride intrusion significantly into concrete substrates
- Penetrates into porous substrates to create hydrophobic protection
- Non-staining appearance that does not discolor the substrate
- Suitable for adverse conditions including windy environments and high temperatures
- Increases freeze-thaw resistance of concrete structures
- Minimises efflorescence on treated surfaces
- Chemically resistant to ice melting compounds, fuels, oils, and atmospheric contaminants
- Allows water vapour transmission from the structure while preventing liquid water ingress
Product Composition and Properties
Chemical Composition
Nitocote SN502 is a single-component penetrating silane-siloxane system that functions by penetrating into porous substrates and reacting to produce a bonded hydrophobic lining to the pores. This chemical reaction significantly reduces absorption of water and water-borne salts while permitting water vapour gas to escape from the substrate.
Performance Properties
| Property | Specification |
|---|---|
| Reduction in chloride ion penetration | 92% (NCHRP 244 Standard)
98% (CTI method) |
| Reduction in water absorption | 85% (NCHRP 244 Standard)
94% (CTI method) |
| VOC Content | 697 g/litre |
These performance figures demonstrate the product's effectiveness in protecting concrete from both chemical and moisture-related deterioration.
Application Specifications
Design Criteria
Nitocote SN502 must be applied in 2 flood coats to achieve correct penetration and protection. The critical requirement is applying the product at the correct rate: 5 m²/litre per coat.
Application Details
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Number of coats | 2 flood coats |
| Application rate per coat | 5 m²/litre (0.2 litres/m²) |
| Total application rate | 0.4 litres/m² |
| Overcoating time | 2 hours @ 20°C |
| Application method | Portable spray equipment (knapsack-type) |
Surface Preparation Requirements
All surfaces must be thoroughly prepared before application:
- Dry and contamination-free – remove oil, grease, loose particles, decayed matter
- Free from biological growth – clean away moss and algal growth
- Free from release agents – remove all traces of mould release oils and curing compounds
- Optimal preparation method – light grit-blasting is recommended
- Post-blast treatment – if moss, algae, or similar growths have occurred, treat with proprietary biocide after grit-blasting
Application Limitations
- Application should not commence if substrate temperature is below 2°C
- Nitocote SN502 should not be contaminated with water
- The product may darken some polymer-modified substrates and white cement – a trial area is recommended before full application
Product Supply and Coverage
Supply Options
| Product | Code |
|---|---|
| Nitocote SN502 20 litre | FC855145-20L |
| Fosroc Solvent 10 (cleaning solvent) | 4 and 20 litre drums |
Coverage Specifications
| Coverage | Rate |
|---|---|
| Theoretical coverage | 5 m²/litre/coat; 0.2 litres/m²/coat |
Important Note: These coverage figures are theoretical. Due to wastage factors and the variety and nature of possible substrates, practical coverage figures will be reduced in real-world applications.
Storage and Shelf Life
- Shelf life: 36 months when kept in dry storage in original, unopened containers
- Storage conditions: Away from sources of heat and naked flames
- Temperature sensitivity: Shelf life may be reduced if stored at high temperatures and/or high humidity conditions
Cleaning and Maintenance
Nitocote SN502 should be removed from tools and equipment using Fosroc Solvent 10 immediately after use. Prompt cleaning prevents hardening of the product on application equipment.
