Concure WB30 - Water Based Wax Emulsion Curing Compound

Concure WB30 is a water based wax emulsion used to retain moisture in concrete for effective curing. Used for concreting generally but especially useful for large areas of concrete construction such as runways, motorways or bridgeworks. Conforms to AS3799. Reduces surface shrinkage and cracking by eliminating moisture loss from exposed surfaces, increases concrete strength and dusting resistance, eliminates the need for damp hessian, sand or polythene, enables rapid film formation and efficient concrete hydration. Non-flammable.

Product Intelligence

Concure WB30 - Water Based Wax Emulsion Curing Compound

Product Overview

Concure WB30 is a water-based wax emulsion curing compound manufactured by Fosroc that functions as a spray-on membrane to retain moisture in concrete during the curing process. It is specifically formulated to prevent surface shrinkage and cracking by eliminating excessive water evaporation from newly placed concrete surfaces.

Chemical Composition

Concure WB30 is a low viscosity wax emulsion that incorporates a special alkali reactive emulsion system. This system ensures that the emulsion forms a non-penetrating continuous film immediately upon contact with a cementitious surface. The impervious film prevents excessive water evaporation, which permits more efficient cement hydration and reduces shrinkage while increasing durability.

Product Variants

Concure WB30 is available in two distinct variants:

Concure WB30 Clear

  • Appears white when wet and clear when dry
  • Complies with AS3799 Class A Type 1
  • Water retention efficiency: 90%
  • Residue 150μm: 0.01%
  • Stability of emulsion: 0.11% (RMS T862)

Concure WB30 White

  • Appears white in both wet and dry states
  • Complies with AS3799 Class A Type 2
  • Water retention efficiency: 91%
  • Residue 150μm: 0.03%
  • Light reflectance: 62% (must exceed 60% per ASTM 309-74)
  • Stability of emulsion: 0.69% (RMS T862)

Key Advantages

  • Reduces surface shrinkage and cracking by eliminating moisture loss from exposed surfaces
  • Increases concrete strength and dusting resistance
  • Eliminates the need for damp hessian, sand, or polythene as curing aids
  • Rapid film formation immediately upon contact with cementitious surfaces
  • Enables efficient cement hydration by maintaining moisture retention
  • Non-flammable and non-toxic
  • Cost-effective for large-scale applications

Standards Compliance

Concure WB30 complies with AS3799-1998: Liquid Membrane standards:

  • Concure WB30 Clear: Class A Type 1
  • Concure WB30 White: Class A Type 2

Both variants must be applied in a single coat application at a coverage rate of 5.0 m²/litre as specified by AS3799 requirements.

Coverage and Supply

Theoretical Coverage Rate: 5.0 square metres per litre

Application Instructions

Preparation

  • Product should be thoroughly mixed prior to use
  • Apply spray application to the surface of newly placed concrete
  • Application should occur as soon as possible after concrete is free from surface water
  • Minimum application temperature: 5°C

Application Technique

  • Hold spray nozzle approximately 450mm from concrete surface
  • Pass nozzle back and forth to ensure complete coverage
  • Maintain pump pressure at level producing fine spray
  • Apply at coverage rate of 5.0 m²/litre

Equipment Options

  • Knapsack spray
  • Motorised spray
  • Other suitable spraying equipment

Critical Limitations on Application

  • Do not brush onto soft, wet concrete or render surfaces, as this will disturb the surface and prevent proper film formation
  • Do not continuously re-circulate through high shear gear pumps in concrete train applications; use low shear diaphragm pump if continuous re-circulation is essential

Functional Characteristics

Moisture Retention

Concure WB30 prevents excessive water evaporation from concrete surfaces, enabling more efficient cement hydration. The wax membrane creates an impervious barrier that retains the moisture necessary for optimal concrete curing.

Film Breakdown

The membrane breaks down from ultraviolet light and weather exposure over time. During this breakdown period, the membrane may:

  • Remain tacky and attract site dust and contaminants
  • Become slippery during wet weather

Bond Breaking Properties

Concure WB30 is useful as a bond breaker between the base lean mix and the structural wearing slab in applications such as bridgeworks, motorways, and large concrete construction areas.

Important Limitations

  • After-trade treatments: Due to the wax film produced, Concure WB30 must not be used on surfaces subjected to after-trade treatments
  • Wet weather slipperiness: The applied membrane can be slippery during wet weather conditions
  • Tacky surface: Until membrane breakdown from UV and weather exposure, Concure WB30 has a slightly tacky surface after application that can attract dust and site contaminants
  • Unsuitable surfaces: Do not apply to soft, wet concrete or render surfaces that will be disturbed

Storage Requirements

  • Store at temperatures between 4°C and 35°C in unopened original drums
  • Keep containers airtight to prevent surface evaporation
  • Avoid freezing or prolonged exposure to direct heat or direct sunlight
  • Do not use if lumps are present in product or if bacterial (rotting) smell is detected

Equipment Cleaning

  • Immediately after use, clean spraying equipment with water
  • If spray nozzles become blocked with wax particles, remove using white spirit or similar fluid

Suitable Applications

Concure WB30 is especially useful for:

  • Runways
  • Motorways
  • Bridgeworks
  • Large areas of concrete construction requiring moisture retention during curing
  • Structural wearing slab applications with bond breaker requirements
