You may ask for a chaperone. Always.

Cosmetic assessment frequently involves examining and photographing parts of the body people do not usually uncover - breasts, abdomen, genitals, buttocks, thighs. You are entitled to have another staff member present for any examination or clinical photography, and you do not have to give a reason.

Ask reception when you book, or say so in the room. Nobody here should make you feel awkward about it, and if anyone ever does, that is a problem with them, not with you.

What a chaperone does

• Stays in the room for the examination or photography
• Is present for your comfort and for the practitioner's protection
• Is a staff member, not a patient
• Is recorded in your notes - who it was, and that you consented

You may also bring a support person of your own. They may be asked to step behind a curtain for the examination itself, but they can stay in the room.

What should happen at any examination

• The practitioner explains what they need to examine and why, before you undress
• You are given privacy to undress and a gown or drape
• Only the area being assessed is uncovered, and only for as long as needed
• You can stop at any point, for any reason, by saying so
• You are never examined by someone whose role has not been explained to you

Clinical photography

Photographs are part of your medical record and are how your result is assessed later. Specific rules apply:

• You consent to them being taken, and you can decline
• They are stored securely under the Privacy Act 1988
• Separate, specific, written consent is required before any image is used anywhere else - a website, a gallery, a presentation
• You can withdraw that consent later
• Personal devices should not be used for clinical photography

What should never happen

• An examination that was not explained first
• Being asked to undress more than the assessment requires
• A chaperone refused
• Comments about your body that are not clinical
• Photographs taken without your consent, or used beyond what you agreed to
• Anyone in the room whose role has not been explained

If any of this happens - here or anywhere - you can raise it with the clinic, and you can report it directly to AHPRA (ahpra.gov.au, 1300 419 495) or to Victoria's Health Complaints Commissioner (hcc.vic.gov.au, 1300 582 113). Making a complaint does not affect your right to care.
