In its place: how to make sure an appointment works for you, whatever you need to make that happen.
Interpreters
Informed consent is not possible without genuine understanding, so this matters more here than almost anywhere.
- Tell us when you book if you would like an interpreter, and which language and dialect
- A professional interpreter is preferable to a family member - relatives soften bad news, skip risks, and sometimes answer for you
- Children must never interpret for a parent in a medical setting
- The Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) is available on 131 450 and can join a call
- Auslan interpreting can be arranged - please give as much notice as you can
Written consent material should be explained in a language you understand. If you have signed something you did not fully follow, say so - it can be gone through again.
Bringing someone with you
You are welcome to bring a partner, friend, family member or advocate to any consultation. Two people remember more than one, and having someone to talk it over with afterwards leads to better decisions.
You can also ask for a chaperone during any examination or clinical photography, at any time and without giving a reason. See your right to a chaperone.
If you need more time
Say so when you book. A longer appointment is easier to arrange in advance than to improvise on the day. That applies if you process information more slowly, if you are anxious, if you have a lot of questions, or if you simply do not want to feel rushed.
You can also ask for:
- Written information to take away and read at home
- Information in larger print
- A follow-up phone call for the questions you think of later
- A quieter appointment time
Access to the clinic
We are at 4 Burke Road, Malvern East VIC 3145. If you use a wheelchair, walking aid, assistance animal, or have any mobility or access need, phone 1300 852 050 before your appointment and we will tell you exactly what to expect and arrange what we can.
Decision-making support
If you have a guardian, an appointed decision-maker or an advance care directive, tell us at booking and bring the documentation. If you support someone else in making decisions, come with them - and know that the practitioner must still satisfy themselves that the patient understands and consents.
Under 18
Extra protections apply to cosmetic surgery for anyone under 18: a mandatory independent psychological assessment, and a cooling-off period of three months. These are not negotiable and they exist for good reason.
If something is not working
If an appointment did not give you what you needed - not enough time, not understood, felt rushed - say so, and ask for another. That is a reasonable request, and a clinic worth using will simply book it.
