In its place, the practical thing: how to get the most out of the appointment you are paying for.

Before you come

Bring

Write down, the night before

People forget most of what they meant to ask. A list on your phone solves it.

How to describe what bothers you

Specific beats general. "This fold, when I smile" or "this area, in fitted clothes" is far more useful to a practitioner than "I want to look better", and it leads to a more accurate assessment of whether anything can help.

Photographs of results you like are welcome - as a way of showing the kind of thing you mean, not as a target. Nobody can give you someone else's face, and a practitioner who says they can is not being straight with you.

What will happen

A history, an examination of the relevant area, clinical photographs, and - for cosmetic surgery - a mandatory screening for underlying psychological conditions including body dysmorphic disorder. Then the discussion: what is realistically achievable for your anatomy, the alternatives including doing nothing, where scars go, your specific risks, recovery time, and cost.

You may ask for a chaperone at any point. See your right to a chaperone and what a consultation involves.

What to take away with you

Afterwards

You are not expected to decide in the room, and a clinic that pushes you to is one to walk away from. There are at least two consultations and a cooling-off period of at least seven days before cosmetic surgery for exactly this reason.

Read the quote at home. Get a second opinion if you want one. Come back with more questions - that is what the second consultation is for. And deciding against it is a perfectly good outcome: see deciding not to proceed.
