In its place, the practical thing: how to get the most out of the appointment you are paying for.
Before you come
Bring
- Your referral - required for cosmetic surgery since 1 July 2023
- A complete list of medications and supplements, including anything over the counter. Fish oil, high-dose vitamin E, some herbal preparations and several anti-inflammatories all increase bleeding
- Your medical history - previous surgery, anaesthetic reactions, clotting problems, diabetes, autoimmune conditions, radiotherapy, and whether you smoke or vape
- Previous operation reports or implant cards for the same area
- Your written questions
- Someone with you, if a second set of ears would help
Write down, the night before
- What specifically bothers you, and when you notice it
- What you hope will be different afterwards
- What you are most worried about
- What your budget actually is
- What you cannot take time off for
People forget most of what they meant to ask. A list on your phone solves it.
How to describe what bothers you
Specific beats general. "This fold, when I smile" or "this area, in fitted clothes" is far more useful to a practitioner than "I want to look better", and it leads to a more accurate assessment of whether anything can help.
Photographs of results you like are welcome - as a way of showing the kind of thing you mean, not as a target. Nobody can give you someone else's face, and a practitioner who says they can is not being straight with you.
What will happen
A history, an examination of the relevant area, clinical photographs, and - for cosmetic surgery - a mandatory screening for underlying psychological conditions including body dysmorphic disorder. Then the discussion: what is realistically achievable for your anatomy, the alternatives including doing nothing, where scars go, your specific risks, recovery time, and cost.
You may ask for a chaperone at any point. See your right to a chaperone and what a consultation involves.
What to take away with you
- A written, itemised quote - surgeon, anaesthetist, assistant, facility, implants, garments, follow-up, GST - and what is not included
- Any MBS item number that may apply, so you can check the rebate with Medicare and your fund yourself
- Written information about the procedure and its risks
- The registration number of the practitioner you saw
- A clear idea of the recovery timeline and time off work
- Who to contact with follow-up questions
Afterwards
You are not expected to decide in the room, and a clinic that pushes you to is one to walk away from. There are at least two consultations and a cooling-off period of at least seven days before cosmetic surgery for exactly this reason.
Read the quote at home. Get a second opinion if you want one. Come back with more questions - that is what the second consultation is for. And deciding against it is a perfectly good outcome: see deciding not to proceed.
