Nobody minds a call that turns out to be nothing. Missed complications are almost always ones someone decided not to bother anybody about.

Call 000 immediately for

Chest pain or shortness of breath - possible clot in the lung
Calf pain, swelling or redness in one leg - possible clot in the leg
Any change in vision after an injectable treatment
Heavy bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure
Collapse, confusion or severe difficulty breathing

Contact the clinic promptly for

Fever, or feeling generally unwell
Redness spreading outward from a wound
Pain that is increasing after day three, rather than easing
Discharge with an odour, or thick and discoloured
A wound edge that opens
Sudden swelling or asymmetry on one side
New or worsening numbness or weakness
Skin that turns pale, white, dusky or mottled after an injectable treatment - this needs attention within hours
Vomiting that stops you keeping fluids down

What is normal in the first week

Swelling and bruising that increase for 48 to 72 hours before settling
Pain that peaks on days two and three, not day one
Blood-tinged fluid on dressings early on
Tightness, pulling and odd sensations
Itching as healing begins
Numbness around the surgical site
Feeling flat, tearful or regretful - extremely common, and it usually passes with the swelling
Constipation from pain relief - drink water, eat fibre, and ask about a gentle laxative

Practical aftercare

Dressings. Leave them as instructed. Keep them dry unless told otherwise. Do not peel at scabs.
Showering. Ask when, and shower rather than bathe. No swimming or spas until wounds are fully closed - usually three to four weeks.
Garments. Wear compression exactly as instructed, including at night if told to. It is uncomfortable and it matters.
Pain relief. Take it regularly at first rather than waiting for pain to build. Ask before adding anti-inflammatories.
Walking from day one, little and often - it reduces clot risk. No lifting or straining.
Sleeping position as instructed, often propped up for several weeks.
No smoking or vaping. Nicotine constricts the vessels keeping healing tissue alive.
Scars: silicone gel or sheeting once wounds are fully closed, and sun protection for at least twelve months.

Your follow-up visits

Typically one week, six weeks, three months and twelve months, with the practitioner who treated you, plus extra visits if you need them. Bring your questions and say plainly if something is worrying you - see if the result is not what you hoped.
