In its place, something clinic websites almost never set out plainly: how to complain, and to whom.

Raising it with us first

Usually the fastest route, and often the only one needed. Phone 1300 852 050 or (03) 9569 3511, or email doctors@meclinic.com.au. You can ask to speak to someone other than the person involved.

It helps to be specific: what happened, when, who was involved, and what outcome you are looking for - an explanation, a correction, a review appointment, a refund, or simply that it does not happen to anyone else.

You are not obliged to come to us first, and making a complaint does not affect your right to ongoing care.

The external bodies, and what each actually does

AHPRA and the Medical Board

For concerns about a practitioner's conduct, performance or health - including misleading advertising, title misuse, or someone practising beyond their scope.

ahpra.gov.au or 1300 419 495.

AHPRA can investigate, impose conditions, suspend or cancel registration. It cannot award you compensation or order a refund.

Health Complaints Commissioner (Victoria)

For complaints about a health service - including cost, communication, access to records and quality of care. Offers conciliation, which can produce practical outcomes including financial ones.

hcc.vic.gov.au or 1300 582 113. Other states and territories have equivalent bodies.

Office of the Australian Information Commissioner

For privacy and health-record concerns - a record misused, access refused, or images used without consent.

oaic.gov.au or 1300 363 992.

Therapeutic Goods Administration

For a problem with a device or medicine - an implant failure, an adverse event, or unlawful advertising of a therapeutic good.

tga.gov.au.

ACCC or Consumer Affairs Victoria

For misleading claims, unfair contract terms, or pressure selling. consumer.vic.gov.au or 1300 55 81 81.

Legal advice

If you are considering a negligence claim. Time limits apply - generally three years from when you knew or ought to have known about the harm, with variations - so get advice early rather than waiting to see how things settle.

Things that help your complaint

Complaints that cannot wait

If a complaint involves a safety risk to others - impairment, sexual misconduct, or serious departure from accepted standards - report it to AHPRA directly rather than working through a clinic process.

And if it is affecting you

A complaint process on top of a disappointing outcome is draining. Talk to your GP; a mental health treatment plan gives subsidised access to a psychologist. Lifeline 13 11 14, Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636. In an emergency, call 000.

Related: if the result is not what you hoped, your records.

Me Clinic, 4 Burke Road, Malvern East VIC 3145.

Individual results may vary. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
