How to check any Australian practitioner in about a minute

1. Go to ahpra.gov.au and open the register of practitioners.
2. Search by name, or - better - by registration number. Numbers are unique; names are not.
3. Read the entry.

Every registered doctor, nurse, dentist, physiotherapist and psychologist in Australia is on this register. If someone is not on it, they are not registered, and they cannot lawfully call themselves a medical practitioner.

What the register tells you

• Registration type. General, specialist, limited, or non-practising. "Non-practising" means they cannot currently treat patients.
• Specialty and field. If it says Specialist registration - Surgery - Plastic Surgery, they are a Specialist Plastic Surgeon. If it does not say specialist, they are not one, whatever a website calls them.
• Qualifications and the year and institution awarded.
• Endorsements, such as scheduled medicines endorsements.
• Conditions, undertakings or restrictions on their practice. These are public. Read them.
• Reprimands and cautions, where applicable.
• Expiry date of registration.

What the register does not tell you

• How many of your specific procedure they perform, or how often
• Their complication or revision rates
• Whether they hold admitting rights at an accredited hospital
• Whether a complaint is currently under investigation
• Whether they are any good

Titles that mislead

• "Cosmetic surgeon" - restricted since 1 July 2023. There is no AHPRA specialty of cosmetic surgery. Someone using this title may have a college fellowship in cosmetic medicine, which is a real qualification but is not specialist surgical registration.
• "Specialist Plastic Surgeon" - protected, and requires FRACS. This is the one to look for if your procedure is surgical.
• "Aesthetic physician", "cosmetic physician", "phlebologist", "dermal clinician" - none of these are protected titles or AHPRA specialties.
• Letters after a name are not all equal. FRACS is a specialist fellowship; some others are memberships of private academies.

If a practitioner refuses to give you their registration number, if the register does not match what a website claims, or if you have a concern about conduct: contact AHPRA at ahpra.gov.au or 1300 419 495.
