Background

Dr Luis is a Melbourne-based medical practitioner working in cosmetic medicine. He completed his internship in Lima, Peru, then focused on cosmetic medicine and completed a fellowship with the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery and Medicine. He has worked at Me Clinic since 2014.

He was formerly a tutor in anatomy education at Monash University and currently tutors in medicine at the University of Notre Dame.

What the title means

A college fellowship in cosmetic medicine is a genuine qualification. It is not AHPRA specialist registration - there is no AHPRA specialty called "cosmetic surgery", and the title "cosmetic surgeon" has been restricted since 1 July 2023. If your procedure is surgical, the relevant qualification is Specialist Plastic Surgeon (FRACS). Dr Luis's work is non-surgical.

About laser treatment, honestly

Laser is a family of tools, not one treatment, and the right device depends on what is being targeted and on your skin type. A few things worth knowing before any laser appointment anywhere:

• Darker skin types carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation and of burns with some devices. A practitioner should ask about your skin type and, for some treatments, do a test patch.
• Results build over a course, usually several sessions spaced weeks apart, and then need maintenance. Work out the annual cost, not the per-session price.
• Sun exposure before and after matters. Treated skin burns easily and pigments unpredictably; daily high-SPF sunscreen is part of the treatment, not an optional extra.
• A pigmented lesion is not lasered until it has been assessed. Laser destroys tissue, leaving nothing for pathology.
• Recent isotretinoin use, active infection, pregnancy and some medications change what is safe - mention everything you take.
