Background

Daniel has more than 20 years in medical aesthetics, working across total-face assessment, skin therapies, lasers and cosmetic injectable treatments. He previously worked for a major pharmaceutical company in the aesthetics field, training doctors and nurses nationally in injecting technique and facial anatomy.

His approach is to spend time on assessment and to build a plan in stages rather than treating everything at once - which is also usually the cheaper and more conservative path.

What an aesthetic nurse can and cannot do

This is worth understanding at any clinic, because it is frequently blurred in advertising.

• Cosmetic injectable treatments involve prescription-only medicines. A nurse cannot prescribe them. A medical practitioner must assess you and prescribe before the treatment.
• Under the Medical Board and Nursing and Midwifery Board guidelines, that assessment must be a real consultation with a prescribing practitioner - in person or by video where permitted - and not a phone approval from a doctor who has never seen you.
• A registered nurse may then administer the treatment within their scope of practice.
• A nurse does not perform surgery and does not diagnose skin cancers.

You are entitled to ask who prescribed your treatment, and to speak to them.

Things to know before an injectable treatment

• Results are temporary. Muscle-relaxing treatments typically last three to four months; volumising treatments vary by product and site. Budget annually, not per session.
• Bruising is common, particularly around the eyes and lips. Fish oil, high-dose vitamin E, some anti-inflammatories and alcohol all increase it - mention everything you take.
• Asymmetry and unevenness can occur and may need a review at two weeks.
• Serious complications are rare but real. Vascular occlusion - filler entering or compressing a blood vessel - can cause tissue loss or, very rarely, blindness.

Call 000 immediately for any change in vision after an injectable treatment. Contact the clinic urgently for severe or increasing pain, skin that turns pale, white, dusky or mottled, or blistering. These need attention within hours, not days.

Ask any clinic whether they keep hyaluronidase on site and who is trained to manage a vascular occlusion. A clinic that cannot answer that should not be injecting filler.
