The stages, and who you see at each

Referral. Your GP, who knows your history. Required for cosmetic surgery since 1 July 2023.
First consultation. The practitioner who would treat you. Assessment, examination, photographs, psychological screening, and the realistic discussion.
Second consultation. Mandatory before booking cosmetic surgery; one of the two may be by video. This is where the questions you thought of at home get answered.
Cooling-off period. At least seven days for adults; three months for under-18s.
Pre-operative preparation. Tests, an anaesthetic review where needed, and your instructions.
The procedure.
Follow-up. Typically one week, six weeks, three months and twelve months, with the practitioner who operated - plus any extra visit you need.

Why it should be the same people

The practitioner who operated knows what they did, what they saw, and what they expected. Someone assessing your result cold does not. Continuity matters most when something is not going to plan, which is when a familiar face and a complete record make the difference between a quick fix and a drawn-out problem.

It is also the strongest practical argument against having surgery a long way from home. A complication at day five is manageable if your surgeon is a drive away, and considerably less so if they are in another country. See surgery overseas.

Questions worth settling in advance

How many follow-up visits are included, and with whom?
What happens after those? Is there a fee for later reviews?
Who do I call at 2am on day three, and will a person answer?
If I have a complication, who manages it and who pays?
Which hospital would I go to if I needed admission?
What happens if my practitioner leaves or is unavailable?

Get the answers before you commit, not when you need them.

Your records follow you

Your file - notes, operation reports, photographs, implant details - is yours to access. You can request copies at any time, and you should take a copy with you if you see anyone else. Records are held under the Privacy Act 1988; see patient privacy.

After an implant procedure, ask for your implant card with make, model, size and batch numbers, and keep it somewhere you will find it in ten years.

When to make contact rather than wait

Contact the clinic promptly for fever, spreading redness, increasing pain after day three, discharge with an odour, a wound opening, or sudden one-sided swelling.

Call 000 for chest pain, shortness of breath, calf pain with swelling, or any change in vision after an injectable treatment.

Nobody here minds being phoned about something that turns out to be nothing. That is what the number is for.
