Laser Genesis
Laser Genesis is a non-ablative laser treatment that works by gently heating the upper dermis - the layer beneath the skin's surface - without breaking the skin. That heat stimulates collagen regrowth over the following weeks, and additional heat generated within dilated capillaries reduces redness.
It is one of the gentler treatments in the laser skin rejuvenation range: no anaesthetic, no downtime, and a gradual result rather than a dramatic one.
The trade-off, stated plainly
Laser Genesis produces subtle results. That is the design: because it does not injure the skin surface, there is no peeling, crusting or recovery period, but the change accumulates gradually across a course of treatments rather than appearing after one.
If you want a visible change from a single session, this is not that treatment. If you want gradual improvement in texture and redness with no interruption to your week, it is well suited.
Conditions it may help
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Uneven skin texture
- Open pores
- Capillaries and skin redness
- Facial veins and spider veins
- Rosacea
- Acne and acne scars
- Scars
- Age spots and hyperpigmentation
- Melasma
- Skin lesions and skin vessels
- Sun damage and skin ageing
Whether it is the right treatment for any of these in your case depends on the specifics, and different devices suit different problems - see the comparison on the laser skin rejuvenation page.
What it does not do
Laser Genesis works on skin quality - texture, tone, redness and collagen. It does not tighten or remove loose skin, and it does not reposition descended tissue. Where the concern is sagging, a facelift or thread lift is what addresses it.
It also does not replace volume - that is dermal filler or fat transfer - and it does not relax the muscles that create expression lines, which is anti-wrinkle treatment.
How many treatments
Because the effect of each session is subtle, a course is needed. Depending on your skin type and the condition being treated, expect 4 to 10 treatments to achieve a visible result.
Ask at consultation how many sessions are anticipated and what the whole course costs, not just one session. Maintenance treatments afterwards are common.
What to expect
The treatment involves passing the laser handpiece repeatedly over the area, gradually warming the skin. Most people describe it as a warming sensation. No anaesthetic is required.
Afterwards the skin may look slightly flushed for a short period. Most people return to normal activities and can apply makeup immediately.
Before and after treatment
Avoid sun exposure, solariums and fake tan before and after treatment. Recently tanned skin absorbs more light energy and raises the risk of burns and pigment change.
Disclose all medications, particularly anything that increases photosensitivity, and any history of cold sores if treating near the mouth. Use daily broad-spectrum sunscreen afterwards - continued sun exposure undoes the result and is the most common cause of post-treatment pigmentation.
Any suspicious lesion in the treatment area should be assessed before treatment rather than lasered over.
Risks
- Redness and warmth immediately afterwards
- Mild swelling
- Blistering and burns
- Changes in pigmentation - darkening or lightening, temporary or persistent
- Scarring - uncommon with a non-ablative treatment, but possible
- Infection, including reactivation of cold sores
- Eye injury without proper protective eyewear
- Little or no response
Risk of burns and pigment change is higher in darker skin types and in recently tanned skin.
