Where is Lithium metal used?
Lithium metal is the next generation of battery technology after lithium-ion due to higher energy density. Lithium metal is also the least dense metal, and essential for ultra-lightweight alloys needed for decarbonisation.
You have heard of lithium-ion batteries. There is one in your phone, and most of the 15 billion mobile devices across the world. Electric vehicles need a lot of lithium-ion batteries.
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have been evolving since the 1970s and have been commercialised since the 1990s. Lithium-ion batteries are considered so important that the inventors were recognised with the 2019 Nobel prize for Chemistry.
Lithium Metal Batteries
So lithium is great in lithium-ion batteries, but it gets better! Lithium metal batteries have even higher energy density. This is important because lithium is relatively scarce as the 33rd most abundant element in nature. Lithium is very important for decarbonisation and we need to maximise the use of our lithium resources. We can do a lot more decarbonisation with the next generation of rechargeable batteries – lithium metal batteries – due to the higher energy density. Electric vehicles can drive farther, mobile devices and lithium tools last much longer when on the go.
