What is net zero?

Net zero refers to a state in which the greenhouse gases going into the atmosphere are balanced by removal out of the atmosphere, effectively contributing zero net emissions to the atmosphere.

In terms of CO2 production, net zero is the state at which global warming stops. The Paris Agreement, a legally binding treaty on climate change, outlines that ‘net zero’ aims to ‘achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century’. 

When must we achieve net zero?

Experts agree that, on a global level, we must achieve net zero by 2050. This is also outlined in the Paris Agreement.

Why is lithium metal production important to achieving net zero?

To achieve net zero we need to both cut down on carbon emissions and develop better processes for removing emissions from the atmosphere. In order to achieve a reduction in carbon emissions, the use of lithium metal is already proving essential.

Electric vehicles, home energy storage batteries, mobility scooters, e-bikes, mobile phones, laptops – all of these items can be powered by lithium metal batteries, in some cases sparing fossil fuels from being used.

By replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy, homes and businesses can significantly reduce their carbon footprint, helping the world achieve net zero on an individual level. With better quality, energy-denser lithium metal batteries for home energy storage, it’s possible to store more renewable energy (from solar or wind power) and reduce, and eventually eliminate, use of fossil fuels for power.

Lithium metal batteries are 50% more energy dense than lithium-ion batteries. QuantumScape, an industry leader in lithium metal battery production, has shown that their batteries can add 80% more range to an EV using current lithium-ion batteries of the same weight. This will make electric vehicles more convenient, giving people an incentive to go electric rather than choose a petrol-powered vehicle.
