Lithium Metal in Space Exploration: A New Frontier
From the first human-made object to orbit Earth in 1957, to the first human on the moon in 1967, to Virgin Galactic’s inaugural commercial space flight in 2023, humankind has made incredible progress in space exploration over the past 100 years of civilisation. We’ve achieved a lot in a relatively short amount of time, and this is something to be incredibly proud of.
So, what’s next in space exploration? While there are many projects in the works involving moon landings and the first human mission to Mars, one element that’s sure to play a key role in these operations is lithium metal.
Let’s hear from the experts at Lithium Metal Australia how lithium metal will offer a new frontier into space exploration:
Why lithium metal could advance space exploration
Lithium metal presents several promising benefits for space exploration. From weight reduction to energy density and longer shelf life, lithium metal could be used in a range of applications in future space exploration.
- Lighter, smaller batteries
In spacecrafts, weight is always a primary consideration. Since lithium metal batteries are smaller and lighter than conventional lithium-ion ones, they could play a key role in weight reduction in spacecrafts. This would allow for more payload capacity, making them suitable for longer missions.
- Higher energy density and longer lifespan
Lithium metal batteries offer higher energy density than any other battery, meaning that more energy can be packed into a smaller battery. Lithium metal batteries can retain their charge better than other batteries, and have a longer shelf life. This means that they could be suitable for space travel, where opportunities for recharging are scarce.
- More environmentally-friendly than current space exploration methods
Currently, rocket launches release giant amounts of carbon dioxide. One rocket launch releases between 200-300 tonnes of CO2, which is emitted right into the atmosphere. For reference, an average passenger vehicle like a combustion engine car releases about 4 tonnes of CO2 per year. There are many concerns around this, but the most prominent is depletion of the stratospheric ozone.
If space exploration can make use of more lithium metal batteries, then there’s a good chance we can reduce the amount of carbon emissions per rocket launch. This, however, is a long way off as lithium metal batteries undergo further development.
To infinity and beyond! Lithium Metal Australia is one of the driving forces providing the world with enough lithium metal to achieve new heights in space exploration. We extract lithium metal in a responsible way, with the aim of decarbonisation of the planet. Our processes of lithium extraction are clean and efficient, using the most energy- and cost-efficient process to produce lithium metal – carbothermic reduction.
