Innovations in Lithium Battery Technology
Wouldn’t it be nice to charge your electric vehicle once every 800km? To charge it for just 15 minutes, instead of 40? To have a phone that could go a couple of weeks without being charged?
While this all sounds pretty farfetched, it could soon become a reality thanks to the recent innovations in lithium battery technology.
A decades old technology, first created in the 1970s, lithium batteries have typically relied on lithium-ion. But it seems ever clearer that we’re reaching the limit of how good we can get lithium-ion batteries.
That has brought an alternative in lithium metal the attention of many global experts, include Lithium Metal Australia. Let’s discuss the latest innovations in lithium battery technology and what the future may hold thanks to this exciting new stuff.
Increase energy density in lithium metal batteries
Perhaps the most ground-breaking innovation in lithium battery technology is the discovery of increased energy density in lithium metal batteries. Lithium metal offers the highest energy density of all anodes, including silicon and graphite, meaning it can store the most amount of energy per unit of mass.
That’s a theoretical 50% more energy storage than ones of the same weight and volume which rely on graphite anodes, such as traditional lithium-ion batteries which are found in electric vehicles, phones and laptops.
Think about a home energy storage battery like the Tesla Powerwall. With perfected lithium metal technology, instead of a lithium-ion base, it could possibly store twice the amount of power than it currently does.
Increased potential for electric vehicle range
This is also going to affect electric vehicle battery technology and the kind of results it can achieve. One leading lithium metal battery producer, QuantumScape, expects their batteries to be able to increase EV range by more than 80% – a massive increase if all goes according to plan.
If we look at one of Australia’s favourite EVs, the Tesla Model Y, we can see that a lithium metal battery would be able to increase its current range of 455km on its lithium-ion battery to over 800km. That’s from Adelaide to Melbourne on a single tank!
Reduced charging times
Imagine being able to charge your phone from 1% to 100% in 5 minutes, and then only need to recharge it in a couple weeks’ time. That is a total possibility due to an innovation in lithium battery technology using lithium metal. Scientists have made progress towards achieving a lithium metal battery which doesn’t sacrifice life cycles when fast charging, making a strong case that we could soon enjoy shorter phone, laptop and EV charging speeds.
These innovations are sure to make life more efficient, convenient and environmentally friendly. Lithium Metal Australia is one of Australia’s leading teams pushing for a greener, cleaner world. We extract lithium metal in a responsible way, with the aim of decarbonisation of the planet.
