Common Issues With Sectional Garage Doors and How To Fix Them

Sectional garage doors look great, with many more design options than standard roller doors. They are also durable and easy to operate, but like all things, sometimes issues arise. After all, they are a largely mechanical system. Our garage door experts have compiled this handy list of issues which may arise with sectional garage doors. 

1. Door Stuck or Jammed

A typical problem is when a sectional garage door becomes stuck or jammed. This can occur due to obstructions in the tracks, misaligned tracks, or opener issues.

How to Fix It:

• Check for obstructions: Inspect the tracks for debris or grime that might be blocking movement. Clean them thoroughly.
• Realign the tracks: If they’re misaligned, the door won’t open or close correctly. Call a professional for safe track realignment.
• Test the opener: If the problem persists, verify the batteries in your remote, ensure the opener is powered, and reset it if necessary. If it’s still not functioning, consider a service visit.

2. Noisy Operation

Excessive noise can be a sign of loose hardware, worn rollers, or a lack of lubrication.

How to Fix It:

• Replace Worn Rollers: If rollers are shot, they can cause loud operation. Contact an Accredited B&D Dealer for a professional replacement.
• Lubricate Moving Parts: Proper lubrication of rollers, tracks, hinges, and springs helps cut down on noise. Use a dry or silicone-based garage door lubricant avoid grease, which attracts dirt and can lead to further trouble.

3. Broken Springs

The springs on a sectional garage door are under high tension to lift and lower the door. A broken spring can make the door tough or impossible to operate.

How to Fix It:

• Call a Professional: Due to the high tension, fixing or replacing springs can be hazardous. Always hire a trained garage door technician to do this and ensure your door’s balance is correct afterward.

4. Door Reverses Before Closing

Sometimes, a garage door may start closing, only to reverse suddenly. This could be tied to auto-reverse features or a misalignment of safety beams.

How to Fix It:

• Check the Safety Beams: If safety beams are installed, ensure they’re aligned and not obstructed by dirt or cobwebs.
• Adjust the Limit Settings: These control how far the door travels before fully closing. If set incorrectly, the door might think it’s hitting an obstacle and reverse. 5. Slow Response Time

A delayed response when you press the remote may be linked to opener issues or interference from other electronics.

How to Fix It:

• Reduce Interference: Electronics or LED bulbs in or near the garage could interfere with the signal. If turning them off doesn’t help, arrange a repair or service through an accredited dealer.
