Choosing a credit card that earns Velocity Frequent Flyer points
Velocity Frequent Flyer is Australia's second-largest loyalty programme, and its points are among the easiest to accumulate from the ground. A large field of cards feeds Velocity, either directly or through a bank's own rewards currency, which makes the choice less about availability and more about structure.
This guide covers how the two earning routes work, the conversion ratios that govern the indirect route, and the conditions worth checking before you apply.
Direct earn or transfer
Direct earn. Velocity co-branded cards award a set number of Velocity Points per dollar of eligible spending, with the month's total swept into your Velocity account automatically. These cards frequently bundle Velocity-specific extras such as Virgin Australia lounge passes and gift vouchers.
Transfer from a bank programme. These cards accrue the issuer's own rewards currency, which you later convert into Velocity Points or another airline partner. Most major issuers support this, American Express, ANZ, Commonwealth Bank, NAB and St.George among them.
The indirect route trades simplicity for control. You convert when you need the points rather than waiting for a monthly sweep, you keep the option of a different airline programme, and you can time a conversion to coincide with a transfer bonus. The direct route requires no management at all.
Conversion ratios into Velocity
If you take the indirect route, the ratio does most of the work in determining what your spending is really worth. These are the published conversion rates and minimum transfer amounts.
| Source programme | Transfer ratio | Velocity Points per source point | Minimum transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| KrisFlyer | 1.55:1 | 0.64 | 5,000 |
| American Express Membership Rewards | 2:1 | 0.5 | 2,000 |
| ANZ Rewards | 2:1 | 0.5 | 2,000 |
| Amplify Rewards | 2:1 | 0.5 | 3,000 |
| NAB Rewards | 2:1 | 0.5 | 3,000 |
| CommBank Awards (Smart Awards, Platinum, Diamond, Ultimate) | 2:1 | 0.5 | 3,600 |
| CommBank Awards (other) | 2.5:1 | 0.4 | 3,600 |
| Westpac Altitude Rewards | 3:1 | 0.33 | 3,000 |
| Flybuys | 2:1 | 0.5 | 1,000 |
| Le Club Accorhotels | 1:1 | 1 | 4,000 |
| Shangri-La Circle | 1:1 | 1 | 2,500 |
| Marriott Bonvoy | 3:1 | 0.33 | 3,000 |
| IHG Rewards | 10:2 | 0.20 | 10,000 |
| Hilton Honors | 10:1.5 | 0.15 | 10,000 |
| Choice Privileges | 20:3 | 0.15 | 20,000 |
Two observations follow from this table. First, hotel currencies convert into Velocity poorly — the ratios are markedly worse than bank rewards programmes, and hotel points are usually better spent on rooms. Second, the difference between a 2:1 and a 3:1 bank programme is substantial, so a card's headline earn rate means little until you apply its programme's ratio to it.
Flybuys is the outlier worth noting for ordinary households. Points earned at Coles and other Flybuys partners convert at 2:1 with a low minimum, which makes it an easy supplementary stream alongside a card.
What to examine before applying
The ongoing earn structure. How many points a card earns day to day matters more over time than any one-off boost. Many cards apply a cap per statement period, beyond which the rate falls to a lower tier. If your spending is lumpy or unusually high, that cap can be the single most important line in the terms. Check whether it resets monthly or annually, and whether international spending is treated differently from domestic.
Whether the travel inclusions suit you. Premium Velocity cards often include Virgin Australia lounge passes, return domestic flights or travel credits. Test these against your existing status. Velocity Gold and Platinum members already have Virgin Australia lounge access, so additional lounge passes are largely useful only for bringing guests. A benefit you would not otherwise buy is not worth paying an annual fee for.
The insurance, in detail. Platinum-grade cards commonly include complimentary travel insurance, typically activated by paying for flights or accommodation with the card. Read the Product Disclosure Statement rather than the marketing summary — these policies carry clauses that catch people out, including age limits, pre-existing condition exclusions and cover caps. Some cards extend to price-drop protection, extended warranties or smartphone screen cover, which can be genuinely useful if you would otherwise buy that cover.
Card acceptance. American Express products tend to lead the market on earn rates for Velocity, but Amex acceptance in Australia remains narrower than Visa or Mastercard. Many collectors hold an Amex as their primary earner and a Visa or Mastercard as a fallback for merchants that do not take it.
The costs and conditions
Unless a specific no-fee arrangement applies, expect a Velocity-earning card to carry an annual fee. On several bank-issued products that fee comes in two parts — a card fee plus a separate rewards programme fee charged for electing to earn Velocity Points. Both belong in your calculation.
Interest is the more serious consideration. Rewards cards carry high purchase interest rates and are not designed for carrying a balance. If you revolve debt, the interest and fees will comfortably exceed the value of the points earned. Most cards offer between 44 and 55 interest-free days on purchases, which helps only if the balance is cleared by the due date.
Higher-tier cards impose minimum income requirements, and issuers will generally ask for payslips or comparable evidence. Some will consider combined household income; practice varies by issuer, so check before applying rather than after a decline.
Two eligibility points are worth confirming in the terms:
- Introductory offers commonly exclude applicants who have held the same or a similar card with that issuer within roughly the previous 12 to 18 months.
- Those offers typically require sustained spending over the first few months rather than a single large purchase, so the requirement needs to fit your normal budget.
Credit history matters as well. Issuers favour applicants with a stronger credit file, and a run of recent applications works against you.
Earning after approval
Routing everyday spending through the card — groceries, fuel, utilities, flights, tickets — is the base strategy, on the condition that the closing balance is paid in full each month.
Beyond that, stack. The Velocity e-store awards points on purchases made through it, on top of whatever the card earns on the same transaction. Flybuys points earned at Coles convert to Velocity separately. Neither requires any additional spending; they simply capture points you would otherwise leave behind.
If you hold an indirect-earn card, wait for transfer bonuses before converting. A promotional conversion rate applies to the whole balance you move, which can be worth considerably more than a marginal difference in a card's daily earn rate. This is the main practical argument for holding points in a bank programme rather than sweeping them into Velocity automatically.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between direct and indirect Velocity cards? Direct-earn cards send Velocity Points to your account automatically each month. Indirect cards earn the bank's own currency, which you convert to Velocity or another partner when you choose.
Which issuers offer cards that earn Velocity Points? American Express, Virgin Money, ANZ, Commonwealth Bank, NAB, St.George, Bank of Melbourne, BankSA, Suncorp and BOQ all provide Velocity Points in some form.
What ratio do bank points convert at? Most bank programmes convert at 2:1, meaning two bank points for one Velocity Point. Westpac Altitude Rewards converts at 3:1, and some CommBank Awards accounts at 2.5:1.
Can I convert KrisFlyer miles to Velocity Points? Yes, at 1.55:1, with a minimum transfer of 5,000 miles.
Are hotel points worth converting to Velocity? Rarely. Hotel conversion ratios into Velocity are much worse than bank programme ratios, and those points generally produce more value spent on rooms.
Do lounge passes bundled with a card help if I already have status? Not much. Velocity Gold and Platinum members already have Virgin Australia lounge access, so extra passes mainly benefit guests travelling with you.
Will holding a card previously disqualify me from an introductory offer? Usually. Most offers exclude applicants who have held the same or a similar card with that issuer within roughly the previous 12 to 18 months.
Are Velocity credit cards worth it? They can be, provided you clear the balance monthly and redeem the points on flights you value. Carrying a balance reverses the arithmetic entirely.
