Most premium flights offer a lounge before you board. This one offers a lounge once you are already airborne.

Qantas' superjumbos returned progressively after their pandemic pause, and in better shape than they left. A reconfiguration programme begun shortly before COVID stripped out the old Business cabin entirely, and the aircraft now carry the newest version of the Qantas Business Suite on the upper deck.

Beyond Los Angeles, the A380 operates daily to London on QF1, Qantas' flagship Kangaroo Route service. That flight runs via Singapore, and the Sydney – Singapore leg can be booked as a standalone journey — roughly eight hours in a flatbed on the upper deck of the largest passenger aircraft ever built. Because it is a leg of a longer service rather than a route in its own right, it is often overlooked. It is also a sector where Qantas Points can work without a Classic Reward seat: a paid fare plus a points upgrade request is a viable path, usually resolved in the day or so before departure.

Check-in, lounge and boarding

An international Business or First ticket brings a benefit that gets less attention than lounge access: time. Check-in for those cabins stays open until 60 minutes before departure, against 90 minutes for Economy and Premium Economy. On an A380 service, that cut-off falls only about 15 minutes before boarding begins. Sydney's Terminal 1 makes it workable, with generally clear Business counters and a dedicated 'First & Business Class' departure channel feeding straight to a SmartGate. Qantas also offers all-day check-in at Sydney for those who prefer to arrive early.

The lounge is the weak link. Sydney's Qantas International Business Lounge has seen better days and does not reward an early arrival. On a busy evening it can be close to full with only one of its two buffet sections open, funnelling everybody into a single queue for a single hot dish. The salad bar is the sensible move when that happens. Travellers with First Lounge access are considerably better served.

The compensation is location: the A380 gate sits directly beneath the lounge, so boarding is a short walk.

The Business Suite on the A380

The old 2-2-2 Skybeds are gone. In their place is the third iteration of the Qantas Business Suite, arranged in a staggered 1-2-1 layout.

That suite first appeared on the A330s, then reached the Boeing 787 with refinements including a retractable privacy divider between the centre pairs. The A380 version goes further, though subtly: the lighter palette of the earlier aircraft is retired in favour of a more vivid wood pattern wrapped around the seat, with black for the shell and side panels.

The A380's real advantage over its siblings is storage. Window seats on the upper deck have additional stowage beneath the windows — standard on A380s worldwide, and the only element of the original Skybed fit-out that survived the refit.

A bulkhead seat such as 16K adds a little more legroom than the standard rows, worth seeking out if you are tall. Pyjamas are not provided on this sector — Qantas issues them only on overnight flights. For an early-evening hop that is no real loss, and the in-seat massage function earns its keep once the working part of the flight is done.

Food and drink

Service opens with Champagne — Duval-Leroy Brut Reserve, a longstanding Qantas staple. Once airborne, the Qantas Sky Spritz is worth trying: a white wine spritz with finger lime and Davidson plum, served across the network.

The departure time lends itself to dinner. Starters run to a zucchini and basil soup, a white-cut chicken salad with wombok, daikon and black vinegar dressing, or Thai-style fish cakes with pickled cucumber and chilli dressing, alongside the now-signature bowl of leaves and bread with Pepe Saya butter. Mains span a plant-based potato gratin, a slow-cooked chipotle lamb sandwich, Jiangxi-style Humpty Doo barramundi with jasmine rice, and a beef fillet with Paris mash and salsa verde. The beef is the standout, and the one most likely to run out.

That matters, because Qantas takes main-course preferences in frequent flyer status order. Chairman's Lounge, Platinum One and Platinum members are asked first, so a Gold member is roughly at even odds of a first choice and lower tiers are frequently left with whatever remains.

The wine service is the weakest part of the experience. Qantas does not print a wine list in Business, and asking what is available can produce nothing more useful than 'red or white'. Pressed further, the whites amounted to Chardonnay or Rosé — and since Rosé is a pink wine, that leaves exactly one white in the cabin. The reds were described as Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz, again without detail. On a route contested by carriers with strong cellars, that is not competitive.

Dine on demand is available, which is more relevant to the onward London leg. Pre-arrival options include a pumpkin and goat's cheese quiche or a Reuben grilled cheese toastie. The A380 also carries a coffee machine, so a proper latte is available at any point in the flight.

The onboard lounge

The A380's other distinguishing feature is its onboard lounge for Business and First passengers, expanded during the refit and now seating ten with seatbelts fitted.

Nothing is said about it during the flight. You need to know it is there and which curtain to walk through — it sits ahead of row 11, accessible from either aisle, at the front of the Business cabin and atop the steps from First. That obscurity is part of the appeal: if everyone knew, nobody would get a seat.

Inside are three seating groups: an L-shaped booth with room for four on one side, and two tables seating three on the other. The space is kept dim on evening flights, but each seat has its own overhead light for reading or working, with AC and USB power scattered throughout and an attendant call button to hand.

There is a regulatory reason it exists at all. Aviation authorities do not permit this windowless section of the aircraft to be occupied during take-off and landing, so it cannot hold revenue seats. Rather than fitting another galley, Qantas turned the constraint into a feature.

Entertainment and service

The seatback screen is crisp and carries the airline's updated entertainment interface. The moving map is reached by the red aircraft icon at the bottom of any screen, with a 3D and fullscreen view a tap away. The A380 also offers something Qantas' other aircraft do not: a tail camera feed. Image quality varies by airframe — the aircraft on this flight, VH-OQH, was the 50th A380 built of roughly 250 — but watching an approach into Singapore from that angle is worth a few minutes.

Service is where Qantas has ground to make up. The customer service manager's greeting was a script delivered verbatim to passenger after passenger, and most other interactions did not progress beyond the mechanics of the service. The exception was genuine: a crew member noticed a passenger working at a lounge table on a Friday evening, suggested some time to relax, and returned with a glass of Champagne. That is the standard the rest of the cabin should aim for.

Summing up

The superjumbo's sense of space, especially on the upper deck, is not replicated by anything else flying. Combine that with the newest Business Suite and an onboard lounge, and Qantas' A380 is a genuinely pleasant way to reach Singapore.

But this is a fiercely contested route. Singapore Airlines flies its own A380s on it, with selected Business pairs that convert into a double bed. Qantas partner British Airways offers its Club Suites with closing privacy doors on the same city pair, and as with this Qantas service, you do not need to be continuing to London to book it. Against that field the hard product holds up and the soft product does not quite.
