Qantas Boeing 737 Business Class: Sydney to Nouméa

New Caledonia is an overseas territory of France that sits under three hours from Sydney. That combination — a French passport stamp, a Pacific lagoon and a flight shorter than several Australian domestic routes — makes Nouméa one of the better value uses of Qantas Points available to Australians.

The more practical argument is availability. Reward seats on this route are genuinely easy to find. Business Class was available on most days of the week when booked only a few weeks out, which is a different world from chasing a Classic Reward to London.

What it costs in Qantas Points

Fees and taxes are payable on top of all of the above.

There is a useful quirk worth knowing. A domestic connection to Sydney can often be added to a Sydney–Nouméa Classic Reward for no additional points at all — only a little more in fees and charges — including in Business Class. That applies from Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra and Hobart. A peak-time domestic Business Class sector for no extra points is a genuinely good outcome.

Queenslanders have a choice to make: the direct Brisbane–Nouméa service is far cheaper in points, but routing via Sydney can open up more travel dates. If your calendar is inflexible, the Sydney option may simply be the one that lets the trip happen.

At Sydney Airport

A Business Class ticket brings priority check-in, the dedicated First and Business departures channel at Sydney, priority security screening and priority boarding. On an early morning departure the whole sequence can take a matter of minutes. Checked bags carry a priority tag and tend to appear early on the belt in Nouméa.

The ticket also includes the Qantas International Business Lounge, where barista coffee is available from opening — useful on a dawn departure — alongside a light breakfast spread and sparkling wine. Qantas Platinum, Platinum One and Chairman's Lounge members, and other oneworld Emerald cardholders, can use the Qantas International First Lounge instead.

The flight

Qantas uses a Boeing 737 on the New Caledonia run rather than a widebody, which makes sense for a sector of around two hours and forty minutes.

Business Class on the 737 is a recliner seat in a 2-2 layout. That configuration suits couples particularly well: a pair travelling together occupies one whole side of the cabin with nobody else beside them. Each seat has a leg rest plus a separate fold-out footrest, and a pillow and blanket are waiting on boarding. There is a seat-back entertainment screen.

Service starts before pushback, with Champagne offered at the seat while the rest of the aircraft is still boarding. On the morning departure, breakfast offered a choice between a cheese and chive omelette and a frittata with feta and red capsicum, served with yoghurt and a pastry, and finished with a Lindt chocolate. Coffee is available through the flight.

This is a daytime flight over open water and an interesting approach, so a window seat earns its keep.

Arriving in New Caledonia

Entry is straightforward. There is no visa requirement for tourists and no online form — just the standard handwritten arrival card. Business Class passengers are directed to a priority lane at passport control, which is sometimes more ceremonial than useful given how quiet the hall can be.

Two practical points. Cars drive on the right, as in mainland France. And Australian mobile data roaming is not available in New Caledonia, so collect a portable Wi-Fi hotspot at the airport if you want to stay connected. A counter operates in the terminal.

A little French goes a long way here. Even a single well-delivered phrase at a café counter puts you ahead of most visitors.

Staying on Îlot Maître

The DoubleTree by Hilton Nouméa Îlot Maître Resort occupies a small islet offshore, and its headline rooms are overwater bungalows. Overwater accommodation is usually associated with destinations that are both distant and expensive; here it is neither, which is the whole point.

Getting there is a two-stage process. From the airport, travel to Port Moselle in the city, where the resort's complimentary boat transfer takes you across in about half an hour. Boats run throughout the day, and you collect a free return ticket from reception, so it is worth checking the timetable when planning excursions.

The three-room bungalow has a living room, a separate bedroom and a large bathroom with a separate bath and shower plus two sinks — the sort of layout that removes friction when two people are getting ready at once. Water views come from almost every window.

The deck is the real attraction. It faces the sunset, and it has a powered staircase that lowers on command straight into the lagoon. You can be swimming within seconds of stepping outside.

The lagoon itself is worth the effort. Reception loans snorkelling gear at no charge, and the fish life is abundant, but the turtles are the highlight — they bask in the shallows and are entirely unbothered by swimmers.

Îlot Maître can be walked in under an hour. The islet itself is public, though a section of the beach is reserved for hotel guests. There is also a small private island among the bungalows set aside for Hilton Honors Gold and Diamond members, which is an unusual form of elite recognition and a good option for guests who booked a mainland-style room rather than a bungalow.

Dining is effectively resort-only unless you take the boat back. Most meals are buffets at breakfast, lunch and dinner. The better food comes from the chef's station, which operates at breakfast and dinner and cooks to order — eggs and omelettes in the morning, rib steak and barbecued prawns in the evening. The bar runs a snacking menu at lunch, and in-bungalow dining is available in the evening, French-leaning and with French wine. The cocktails are competent.

Nouméa itself

Port Moselle is where the resort boat docks, which makes it the natural starting point. The waterfront is pleasant to walk, and there are restaurants within steps of the dock — close enough that a dinner ashore is an easy addition to any day, rather than an expedition.

The city centre rewards an aimless walk. French flags, French street signage and French retail chains give the place a distinctly European texture laid over a Pacific setting. Place des Cocotiers is the centre of town, marked by the Fontaine Céleste, built in the 1890s, with shade to sit in on a hot day.

Musée de la Ville de Nouméa sits across the road from Place des Cocotiers and is an easy walk from Port Moselle. Entry costs a few hundred Pacific francs, making it one of the cheapest things to do in the city. The three storeys cover the territory's wartime history and its place in the Pacific, including the origins of the Pacific franc — introduced in 1945 as French inflation surged, and retained in New Caledonia even after mainland France moved to the euro. The exit leads through a garden with benches and French-style street lamps.

Is Business Class worth it here?

On a sector this short, Economy would be no hardship, and at 18,000 Qantas Points each way from Sydney it is a considerably cheaper way to travel — particularly for a family. The case for Business is the recliner seat with its leg rest, the lounge access at both ends of an early start, the priority airport processing and the full meal service. On a holiday that begins at dawn, those things matter more than the flying time suggests.
