Why Choose This Card

The Platinum Card from American Express has long been considered the benchmark for premium travel. It’s the top-tier publicly available card in American Express’ Charge Card¹² range, and while the annual fee of $1,450 sets high expectations, the suite of benefits comfortably lives up to it.

What makes this card stand out is the global lounge access in over 1,550 locations⁵, generous travel credit³ for flights and hotels, complimentary travel insurance⁸, and elite status with hotel⁶ and car hire programs. It also stands out with a strong earn rate of 2.25 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent² (excluding government transactions).

It’s also worth noting that the Platinum Card is a Charge Card¹², not a standard credit card, so the balance must be repaid in full each month. It comes with flexible spending power, offering greater purchasing flexibility when used responsibly. This means that the amount you can spend is dynamic and can adapt based on your transaction patterns, your personal credit rating, and other factors.

The Platinum Card is automatically enrolled into the Membership Rewards Ascent Premium program, which allows Card Members to transfer their Membership Rewards Points to over 10 Travel Partner Programs¹⁵, including Qantas Frequent Flyer, Velocity Frequent Flyer, KrisFlyer, Cathay, Skywards and more.

This guide references some of the benefits of insurance policies provided with this card. You should read the PDS and obtain independent professional advice before obtaining this product.

American Express Platinum Card Members will also receive up to $400 in Global Dining Credit4 per calendar year until 31 December 2026. That’s $200 to spend at over 100 restaurants in Australia and up to $200 at over 2,000 restaurants in 20 countries overseas. A separate one-time enrolment is required for each credit.

The Platinum Card is the top-tier publicly available card within the suite of charge cards offered by American Express. With an annual fee of $1,450, you would expect a large range of benefits to be included with the Card, and it doesn’t disappoint in this regard.

Ongoing perks of the card include a $450 annual Travel Credit3, complimentary lounge access to over 1,550 lounges at over 500 airports and 140 countries worldwide5, complimentary status, and memberships with a number of hotel loyalty programs including a paid premium membership to ALL Accor+ Explorer18 (valued at $349), a complimentary The Australian premium subscription14, and a cloungeomprehensive suite of insurance cover14 including but not limited to Medical Emergency Expenses, Travel Inconvenience, Trip Cancellation and Amendment, Smartphone Screen, and Loss Damage Waiver. The Travel insurance coverage is available to both the Primary Card Member and up to 4 Additional Card Members.

Given that the Card has many travel-related benefits, it is aimed at frequent travellers who can derive excellent value from the Card. If you are only an occasional traveller, you may wish to look at a lower-cost American Express Card, such as the American Express Explorer Card, that is still enrolled in the Membership Rewards Program2 but has fewer travel-related benefits.

For business owners whose expenses are mostly business-related rather than for personal dining or travel, the features of the American Express Business Platinum Card may be more suited for you.

The Platinum Card is automatically enrolled into the Membership Rewards Ascent Premium, which allows for Card Members to transfer their Membership Rewards Points to over 10 airline and hotel partners including Qantas Frequent Flyer, Velocity Frequent Flyer, KrisFlyer, Asia Miles, Skywards and more20.

Key things to know

It is worth noting that the Platinum Card is a charge card12. This is different from a regular credit card in that the balance needs to be paid off in full every month as opposed to just a minimum balance in order to avoid any charges or penalties.

Unless American Express tell you otherwise, your American Express Charge card comes with flexible spending power3, also known as no-pre-set spending limit. This means that the amount you can spend is dynamic and can adapt based on your transaction patterns, your businesses credit rating and other factors. The way you use your Card can help your spending power grow, particularly in the first few months. To help maximise your spending power, you can make regular transactions and don’t miss any payments.

Earning points from spend on the Platinum Card

With the American Platinum Card, you will earn Membership Rewards Points.2

Membership Rewards partners with the major frequent flyer programs in the region, allowing points transfers out to over 10 airline and hotel partners.20

While the Platinum Card automatically enrolled in Membership Rewards2 program, it does come with the additional benefit of being able to transfer to Qantas Frequent Flyer, a relatively rare perk in the market and one that is not available to other American Express Cards aside from the Platinum Business.

Be sure to read our post on when it makes sense to transfer Amex points to Qantas to make sure you’re getting the best value if you are looking to utilise the above-added benefit. Should you do choose to transfer your points to Qantas, you may be able to take advantage of bonus Qantas offers.

The earn rate for the Platinum Card is as follows:

For reference, the full set of terms for the Platinum Card Membership Rewards program are here.

Lounge access with the American Express Platinum Card

There are several lounge options5 you can take advantage of as a Platinum Card Member.

Virgin Australia offers the primary Card Member unlimited access to Virgin Australia domestic lounges5, including the ability to bring in a guest travelling with you. You and your guest need to be travelling with Virgin Australia to gain access.

Virgin Australia Lounge Melbourne

American Express also has a growing network of American Express-branded airline lounges and Centurion lounges globally, including The Centurion® Lounge at Sydney Airport International Terminal and another at Melbourne International Airport.

American Express Lounge Sydney

You can bring 1 guest to the American Express lounges, as well as 1 child under 2 years old travelling with you, and is usually limited to 2 visits a year with most eligible American Express Cards. However, those holding The Platinum Card are able to access American Express and Centurion lounges on an unlimited basis, regardless of which airline you are flying.

We’ve written about the other American Express Lounges, mainly located in the US as well as one in Hong Kong, in our guide to the American Express Lounge network.

The Centurion Lounge San Francisco

You’ll also receive a Priority Pass lounge membership5 for you and an Additional Platinum Card Member, with each being able to bring a guest to join them when travelling on the same flight.

The Priority Pass benefits that extend from the complimentary membership through the Platinum Card are not identical to paid memberships. Platinum Card members only have access to Priority Pass lounges and not eateries, which are usually found in smaller airports that do not have lounges available.

Platinum Card Members also get access to Plaza Premium5, which operates a small number of about 50 high-quality lounges worldwide, including great lounges in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Plaza Premium Lounge Brisbane

Additionally, when travelling with Delta, a Platinum Card Member can access Delta SkyClub lounges5.

Access to travel booking benefits and services through Platinum Travel Service & American Express Travel Online

American Express Travel is available to all Amex Card Members but Platinum Card Members get additional benefits, which include the ability to use the $450 Travel Credit5 that is included as part of the Platinum Card offering.

Note: You will need to use your annual $450 Travel Credit on a single travel booking of $450 or more on your eligible Card, made through American Express Travel Online. Your booking will be charged in full to your American Express Platinum Card and American Express will then credit $450 to your Account within 3 business days but may take up to 30 days. You will still receive your $450 Travel Credit each year, and your Travel Credit anniversary will remain the same. Click here for the full Terms & Conditions.

For Business Class and First Class fares, Platinum Card Members can take advantage of the International Airline Program through Amex Travel which offers up to 20% off airfares on a number of world-leading airlines.

These include British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Japan Airlines, LAN, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, United and Virgin Australia.

The benefit is available to both Primary and Supplementary Cardmembers and available on First and Business Class fares.

American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts is only for Platinum Card Members

The benefits typically are subject to availability, but can include:

With many FHR bookings, you’ll also continue to receive points and status with the parent hotel loyalty program too, unlike other consolidators.

The complimentary The Australian Premium subscription is available to Primary and Additional Platinum Card Members.

Platinum Card complimentary insurances

The Platinum Card comes with a number of complimentary insurances8 and is one of the main benefits of holding the card. The coverage provided by American Express for Platinum Card Members, and now up to 4 of their Additional Platinum Card Members.

The insurances, once activated, include:

Smartphone Screen Cover is unique in the market as a credit card insurance offering, and it will cover you for screen repairs up to $500, with a 10% excess on the claim. Access to the Amex Experiences App

The Amex Experiences App makes it easier for you to access the Premium Concierge service, and check out the latest information on Platinum benefits, travel offers, events and recommended merchants.

The App is available for download on Google Play or the App Store. This is not a replacement for the Amex App but can be used alongside it.

Mobile wallet integration

American Express Cards work with Apple Pay®, Google Wallet™ and Samsung Pay, meaning you can use this card on your smartphone for easier payments.

Read the Point Hacks guide to using Apple Pay or for using Google Wallet and Samsung Pay, including instructions on how to add your American Express card to those services.

With this feature set up, it means you could still use your NFC-enabled phone to make purchases with your American Express account, even if your physical card is lost or stolen and pending replacement.

Using the Platinum Card overseas

If you are looking to use the Platinum Card overseas, there is a 3.5% foreign exchange fee levied on all overseas transactions. This is a shortfall of the Australian version of the Card, especially given that the much cheaper US variant of the Platinum Card comes with no foreign exchange fees.

Card Members, however, will earn the full number of points for all overseas transactions, so long as the transaction is not an excluded transaction for points earn.

Taking advantage of Additional Card Members

The Platinum Card offers additional cards linked to your primary account for Card Members over 16 years of age.

The Priority Pass membership can be used by one Additional Platinum Card Member as well as the primary account holder.

The following statuses can also be registered for at least one Additional Platinum Card Member:

Registration of status benefits for Additional Card Members is handled mostly through the Amex website once you have set up the Card Members on the account.

You can also get itemised transaction reports for Additional card members through the Amex website or your statement.

Sign up for Amex offers

Amex Offers19 is a program that provides a statement credit to your account for making an eligible purchase. Think of it as an instant cashback offer without having to deal with any paperwork.

By logging into your app or the Amex website, you can add promotions from certain retailers to your Platinum Card, meaning you could get something like $15 off when spending $75 or more at Heinemann Duty-Free and paying with this card.

Considering this card for Business-related transactions?

American Express offer a range of both business and consumer charge and credit cards. They do permit business transactions to be made on personal cards, unlike some other banks, but you might find some of the other business-focused benefits of the business cards to be appealing or more appropriate.

So – if you’re a sole trader or a business looking to earn points with your business spend – this card would still work for that purpose.

There’s a full list of business and personal consumer American Express cards which might be suitable for earning points from business-related transactions here.

Summing up: the American Express Platinum Card

This card is likely to appeal most to those who travel frequently and can utilise most of the travel benefits of the card. Given the high annual fee of $1,450 every year, a cost-benefit analysis should be made, especially if you are a borderline frequent traveller. For those that rarely travel, other American Express cards such as the American Express Explorer Card might be better suited.

American Express Platinum: rewards, credits and premium travel benefits

Source review: 17 September 2026. This information is general in nature. It does not take your personal circumstances into account. Fees, benefits and eligibility conditions can change; check the issuer's current terms before applying or relying on a benefit.

A premium charge card with a high annual fee

The American Express Platinum is a premium charge card whose value depends on using a broad collection of travel and lifestyle benefits. The reviewed Point Hacks sources record an annual fee of $1,450, 2.25 Membership Rewards points per eligible dollar on most purchases and one point per dollar at government bodies. Earning is uncapped in the reviewed material. Because the card earns Membership Rewards rather than points in one airline program, the balance can remain flexible until a transfer or other redemption is chosen.

As a charge card, it uses flexible spending power, sometimes described as no pre-set spending limit. That does not mean spending is unlimited. American Express assesses purchasing capacity dynamically using factors such as payment history, account activity and financial information. The normal expectation is that the statement balance is paid according to the card's charge-card terms. Anyone comparing it with a conventional credit card should read the current payment conditions rather than treating the absence of a fixed limit as a borrowing facility.

Membership Rewards and transfer choices

The central rewards advantage is optionality. The Membership Rewards flexibility guide explains how points can be held with American Express and later moved to participating airline or hotel partners. The transfer-partner comparison discusses the trade-offs between partners, including different conversion rates, award availability, fees and expiry policies. A transfer is generally one-way, so speculative transfers can reduce flexibility.

Platinum earns in the Ascent Premium tier, which is material because the partner set includes Qantas Frequent Flyer as well as programs such as Velocity, KrisFlyer and Cathay. Transfer ratios are not identical across programs and can change. The step-by-step transfer guide should be checked before calculating an effective airline-points earn rate. A 2.25 Membership Rewards earn rate does not necessarily become 2.25 airline points per dollar.

Travel credits and recurring benefits

The card includes recurring travel and lifestyle credits, but the reviewed KB contains inconsistent historical figures for the travel credit. This page therefore does not state a fixed current amount without confirmation from the live card terms. The key point is that a credit is conditional: it may require a qualifying booking through American Express Travel, may need to be used in one transaction, and generally expires if it is not used during the relevant benefit year. It is not the same as cash and should be valued at what the holder would otherwise have paid for an eligible booking.

The same discipline applies to dining, retail or entertainment credits. Check enrolment, participating merchants, minimum transaction values, geographic restrictions and reset dates. A collection of face-value credits can appear to exceed the annual fee while producing much less real value if it changes normal spending. The strongest case for the card comes from benefits that overlap with planned purchases and travel.

Lounge access across several networks

The lounge package spans several networks rather than one universal membership. The American Express lounge guide records unlimited access to the global Centurion and International American Express lounge network for eligible Platinum cardholders. Other reviewed sources describe Priority Pass membership, Plaza Premium access, Virgin Australia lounge access when the flight conditions are met, and Delta Sky Club access when travelling on an eligible Delta itinerary. Each program has its own rules for guests, children, operating hours, eligible flights and enrolment.

That distinction matters in practice. A lounge logo shown in a directory is not a guarantee of entry, and some locations participate under one network but not another. The current terms and the relevant lounge network should be checked before each trip. The KB also records that a Lufthansa lounge arrangement was scheduled to end on 30 September 2026; it should not be treated as a permanent part of the card after that date.

Hotel status and premium hotel bookings

The reviewed material describes enrolment in Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite, Hilton Honors Gold and Radisson Rewards Premium, together with ALL Accor+ Explorer membership. These benefits can provide upgrades, later checkout, dining savings or other privileges, but delivery depends on the individual program and property. Registration is normally required, and elite benefits may be subject to availability. The Platinum hotel-status guide gives the program-level detail needed to judge whether a status tier will be useful.

The card also provides access to American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection. These are booking channels with property-specific benefits, not blanket discounts on every hotel. A Fine Hotels + Resorts stay may include breakfast, late checkout, an on-property benefit and a room upgrade where available, but the price should still be compared with direct and other eligible rates. Hotel-program points or elite recognition can depend on how a property is booked.

Insurance and introductory offers

Travel and purchase-related insurance is included subject to activation criteria, eligibility, limits and exclusions. The American Express insurance guide provides general background, including the importance of paying for an eligible return trip, but the Platinum policy document controls the outcome. Check who is insured, trip-length and age limits, pre-existing conditions, excesses and the treatment of points bookings before relying on cover.

Introductory Membership Rewards offers are time-limited and can be split across more than one membership year. This mirror does not preserve a promotional total. The American Express bonus-eligibility guide explains the usual exclusion for people who currently hold, or recently held, a primary Australian-issued American Express card. Applicants should check the offer deadline, eligible-spend definition and every instalment condition on the application page.

Who is likely to find value

The Platinum can suit a frequent traveller who will use several lounge networks, hotel memberships and recurring credits while benefiting from flexible Membership Rewards transfers. It is harder to justify when the credits prompt extra spending, the lounge and hotel benefits duplicate status already held, or most transactions attract the foreign-currency fee. Assess the card over an ordinary renewal year as well as the first year: ongoing value must stand without a sign-up bonus, and every benefit should be valued at its realistic personal use rather than its advertised face value.

At the review date, the source pages displayed up to 340,000 bonus Membership Rewards points for eligible new Amex members applying by 6 October 2026. The first 240,000 required $5,000 of eligible purchases in the first three months. Another 100,000 required a further $5,000 during the first three months of the second membership year. The Platinum-versus-Explorer comparison confirms that this is a two-year structure. The second instalment should be valued after allowing for the second $1,450 annual fee and continued eligibility.

The $450 travel credit and other credits

The Platinum travel-benefits guide records a $450 annual travel credit for eligible flights, hotels, car rentals or packages booked through American Express Travel. It expires if unused. Prices and conditions should be compared with direct booking because the credit's face value does not guarantee an equal saving. The credit may also be usable on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or Hotel Collection rates where the selected property and room allow prepayment.

The corpus contains several generations of dining-credit information. A historical article originally described $200 in Australia plus $200 overseas and said the offer ran through 31 December 2025. Newer 2026 comparison material describes the credits as continuing, while another July 2026 article says they end on 31 December 2026. Because dates have been extended and reported inconsistently, the live Amex Offers enrolment screen and current terms should control. Do not assume a dining credit is permanent, automatically enrolled or available at every restaurant.

Credits only offset the fee when they replace planned spending. A holder who naturally uses a $450 travel booking and both $200 dining allowances has a different renewal calculation from someone who changes merchants or takes an unnecessary trip to avoid losing them.

Membership Rewards transfer mathematics

Ascent Premium keeps points with American Express until transfer. The Membership Rewards comparison and Platinum-versus-Explorer article show that ratios differ. Qantas and Velocity are recorded at 2:1, while KrisFlyer and Cathay are recorded at 3:1 in the reviewed material.

Eligible spend Membership Rewards earned Qantas or Velocity at 2:1 KrisFlyer or Asia Miles at 3:1
$10,000 22,500 11,250 7,500
$50,000 112,500 56,250 37,500
$100,000 225,000 112,500 75,000

These examples exclude government spend, bonus promotions and excluded transactions. They show why 2.25 Membership Rewards points must not be described as 2.25 airline points. Transfers are generally one-way. Check award availability, expiry and the partner ratio before moving a large balance.

Lounge access and the 2026 reductions

Personal Platinum retains unlimited access to the global American Express Centurion and International Lounge network, generally with one guest travelling on the same flight under the July 2026 rule. It also includes Priority Pass for the primary member, Plaza Premium access, Virgin Australia domestic lounge access when travelling on an eligible Virgin Australia flight, and Delta Sky Club access under Delta's itinerary rules.

The 2026 lounge-change report is essential because older guides overstate guesting:

These changes do not remove the primary member's unlimited global Centurion access. They change how much value a couple, family or household can obtain from one account.

Hotels, premium booking channels and status

ALL Accor+ Explorer includes Stay Plus night benefits and dining discounts under its program rules. Hilton Honors Gold, Marriott Bonvoy Gold and Radisson Rewards Premium require enrolment and deliver benefits subject to the individual hotel program. Elite status does not guarantee every upgrade or late checkout.

Fine Hotels + Resorts can provide breakfast, guaranteed 4pm checkout, noon check-in where available, an upgrade where available, Wi-Fi and an on-property benefit often worth US$100. The Hotel Collection generally requires a two-night stay and can provide an upgrade where available plus a US$100 property credit. These are booking programs, not universal hotel discounts. Compare the prepaid or flexible rate, cancellation terms and whether hotel points and status recognition apply.

Insurance, additional cards and charge-card behaviour

Travel, rental-car, purchase and other covers are subject to the Platinum insurance terms. KB material records loss-damage-waiver cover up to $125,000, but activation, excesses, insured people, age, trip duration, pre-existing conditions and eligible payment rules vary by section. The PDS controls each claim.

Up to four additional cards can pool household spend into the primary member's Membership Rewards balance. Additional cardholders do not receive separate travel or dining credits. A July 2026 comparison says travel insurance can cover additional cardholders and eligible family members when the payment conditions are met, but liability for all additional-card spending remains with the primary member. Bonus eligibility for a later separate application should be checked directly with Amex.

No pre-set spending limit means purchasing capacity changes with account use, payment history and financial information. It is not an unlimited facility. The balance is normally due in full under the charge-card terms, so a points strategy must begin with reliable cash flow.

Practical questions answered

Does 2.25 Membership Rewards points equal 2.25 airline points?

No. Membership Rewards is a bank currency, and the number of airline points depends on the destination program's transfer ratio. At 2:1 the card earns 1.125 airline points per eligible dollar; at 3:1 it earns 0.75. Compare cards using the airline currency ultimately received, not the headline bank-points rate.

Is the $450 travel credit cash?

No. It is an annual booking benefit used through American Express Travel under its eligibility and minimum-booking rules. It expires if unused and may not match the cheapest fare available elsewhere, so value it only at the amount of planned travel spending it replaces rather than automatically at $450.

Are the dining credits guaranteed beyond 2026?

The KB contains successive end dates and inconsistent wording across versions, so the future benefit should not be assumed. Check the live American Express enrolment page, participating venues, geographic split and benefit period before making a reservation. A renewal calculation should exclude credits that are not confirmed for the next membership year.

Does an additional cardholder keep Priority Pass after 30 September 2026?

No. The announced change leaves Priority Pass membership with the primary Platinum member from 1 October 2026. Additional cardholders may still have other account benefits, but separate Priority Pass access should be removed from travel plans and renewal valuations covering the later period.

How many free Centurion guests are allowed?

The July 2026 rule reduced the complimentary allowance to one guest travelling on the same flight, subject to the lounge's terms and capacity. Extra guests may need to pay or qualify independently. Confirm same-day travel and local lounge rules before arriving with a larger group.

Does Platinum retain global Centurion access in 2027?

Yes under the reviewed announcement. The February 2027 removal concerns Qantas Ultimate's Australian access, while personal and Business Platinum retain unlimited entry. This does not override guest limits, capacity controls, opening hours or the requirement to meet each lounge's admission conditions.

Are hotel upgrades guaranteed?

Usually not. Upgrades attached to hotel status or Fine Hotels + Resorts are commonly subject to availability, room category and the eligible booking channel. Fine Hotels + Resorts separately advertises guaranteed 4pm checkout at participating properties, but other benefits should be checked on the specific rate before booking.

Do additional cards generate separate credits?

No. Additional-card spending feeds the primary Membership Rewards account, while annual travel and dining credits belong to the account and are shared. Issuing extra cards can help consolidate family spending, but it does not multiply each statement credit or create a separate introductory offer.

Are all 340,000 introductory points earned in year one?

No. The reviewed offer places 100,000 points in the second membership year after a further spending target, so the headline total requires keeping the account and paying another annual fee. Compare the first and second years separately and check the live offer's spend deadlines and eligibility exclusions before applying.

Is no pre-set limit the same as unlimited spending?

No. American Express assesses purchasing capacity dynamically using factors such as account history, payment behaviour and current exposure. Transactions can still be declined. Check capacity before an unusually large purchase rather than assuming the charge-card structure guarantees approval.

A realistic renewal calculation

Start with the $1,450 fee, then count only credits that replace planned expenditure. Add a conservative value for lounge visits actually expected, hotel memberships that will be used and insurance that meets the traveller's needs. Treat points as the airline or hotel currency ultimately received, not as 2.25 cents per dollar. Finally, remove benefits that end during the next membership year. This card can deliver substantial value to a frequent traveller, but its large bundle makes overvaluation easy when every nominal benefit is counted at face value.
