Key eligibility requirements for the American Express Business Platinum Card

There are no requirements for the self-employed to have been trading for 18 months or 12 months if they hold another American Express card when considering the Platinum Business Card. Therefore, this card could be an alternative to the personal Platinum card.

Key differences to the personal Platinum Card

For many people, the Platinum Card could be a more appropriate card. For those who have a lot of business-related spend then the Platinum Business Card could be useful and can provide additional cash flow to businesses.

Platinum Business is a Charge card

This is a Charge card and unless American Express tell you otherwise, your American Express Charge card comes with flexible spending power, also known as no-pre-set spending limit.5

This means that the amount you can spend is dynamic and can adapt based on your transaction patterns, your businesses credit rating and other factors. The way you use your Card can help your spending power grow, particularly in the first few months. To help maximise your spending power, you can make regular transactions and don’t miss any payments.

American Express offer some more detailed information regarding the differences between a charge and credit card here.

Benefits of the Business Platinum Card

The benefits of the Business Platinum Card include (take a deep breath):

Earning Points from Spend on the Platinum Business Card

With the American Express Platinum Business Card, you’ll be earning Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points.

In short, Membership Rewards partners with the major frequent flyer programs in the region as a flexible points program, which allows on-demand transfers of your points over to the frequent flyer program at your request.

On top of the standard benefits of Membership Rewards points, Platinum Business Card account holders are also able to transfer their points to Qantas Frequent Flyer, one of only a couple of cards in the market that can do this since it earns Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points (rather than earn directly into Qantas Points).

The Platinum Business Card earn rates are as follows:

The ability to earn 2.25 points per $1 on utility transactions including gas, water, electricity providers and insurances is a big plus for the card. You can also earn 1 point per $1 on all government spend such as at the Australian Taxation Office, Australia Post, federal/state and local government bodies.

Lounge Access

There are several lounge options you can take advantage of as a Platinum Business Card Member.3

American Express also has a growing network of Amex-branded airline lounges globally, including The Centurion® Lounge at Sydney Airport’s International Terminal and another at the Melbourne Airport.

Generally, you can bring1 guest to the American Express lounges, as well as children travelling with you, and with the Platinum Card, you may be able to access the The Centurion® Lounge in Sydney, Melbourne and other International American Express lounges globally on an unlimited basis.

You’ll receive a Priority Pass lounge membership for you and an additional card member, which now includes eateries at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane Airports. Guests are charged US$35 each.

(There is also a 10% discount on paid Priority Pass memberships here for Point Hacks readers.)

Another lounge network that Platinum Card Members gain access to is Plaza Premium, which operates a small number of about 50 high-quality lounges worldwide, including a great lounge in Brisbane’s International Terminal. You can read more in our Plaza Premium guide.

Additionally, when travelling with Delta, a Platinum Card Member can access Delta SkyClub lounges.

Access to travel booking benefits and services through American Express Travel

American Express Travel is available to all Amex Card Members, but Platinum Business Card Members receive additional value.

For Business Class fares, Amex Travel has competitive pricing and has access to a wide range of discounts that may not be publicly available.

This is primarily across their partner airlines: British Airways, Delta, Emirates, Etihad, Singapore Airlines and South African Airways.

Beyond airfare, there are also a number of partner independent hotel chains which offer some exclusive benefits when booking through American Express Travel.

There’s then the major hotel program benefit – American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts.

American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts is only for Platinum Card Members

American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts8 is a unique benefit for Card Members, which offers more hotel benefits when booked through American Express.

With many Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings you’ll also continue to receive points and status with the parent hotel loyalty program too.

The benefits may include:

Business Platinum Card Members also have access to The Hotel Collection, which is a smaller set of high-end (as opposed to ultra high-end) properties, where they can get a free room upgrade and US$100 hotel credit. In addition, you may also use Pay with Points when booking a stay at properties under The Hotel Collection. This essentially allows you to use your Membership Rewards points to pre-pay your hotel stay.

Complimentary Hotel Status

The Platinum Business Card comes with a range of hotel and other elite status benefits. We’ve covered off exactly what you’ll receive in a dedicated guide, but the key benefits are Marriott Bonvoy Gold EliteHilton Honors Gold, and Radisson Rewards Premium status.

Complimentary ALL Accor+ Explorer membership

Also included with the Platinum Card is a complimentary membership to ALL Accor+ Explorer, which has an annual fee of $349 if bought separately.

This membership offers benefits such as a free night at a hotel in the Asia-Pacific each year you hold the card and the potential for large discounts at restaurants within hotels, even when you are not staying at one.

Flexible Payment Option

Business owners can free up their cash flow with an instant line of credit on their Charge Card. Instead of paying off the balance in full each statement period, it can be paid off over time.5

How it works:

  1. The Card Member will receive a statement at the end of each statement period summarising their spend
  2. They can choose to pay the Closing Balance, the minimum amount due, or any amount in between (up to their Flexible Payment Option Limit).
  3. They can carry over any unpaid amount to their next month’s balance. Any amount not paid in full will incur interest at a rate of 23.99% p.a. until repaid.

With Flexible Payment Option, you will be charged interest if you do not pay your Closing Balance in full by the due date each month. Please refer to your monthly statements for the current interest rate. Please refer to the full Flexible Payment Option Terms and Conditions.

Travel and Other Insurance

It is difficult to provide too much commentary on the card’s insurance coverage4 given that each person’s insurance needs are different, so check out the full Platinum Business Card Insurance PDS and assess whether it will cover your needs.

Depending upon the type of cover, the insurance is activated by either just being a Platinum Business Card Member, or by making a purchase of an eligible item.

The insurances included are:

This guide references some of the benefits of insurance policies provided with this card. You should read the PDS and obtain independent professional advice before obtaining this product.

Access to the Amex Experiences App

The Amex Experiences App makes it easier for you to access the Premium Concierge service, and check out the latest information on Platinum benefits, travel offers, events and recommended merchants.

The App is available for download on Google Play or the App Store. This is not a replacement for the Amex App but can be used alongside it.

Mobile wallet integration

American Express Cards work with Apple Pay®, Google Wallet™ and Samsung Pay, meaning you can use this card on your smartphone for easier payments.

Read the Point Hacks guide to using Apple Pay or for using Google Wallet and Samsung Pay, including instructions on how to add your American Express card to those services.

With this feature set up, it means you could still use your NFC-enabled phone to make purchases with your American Express account, even if your physical card is lost or stolen and pending replacement.

Summing up: American Express Platinum Business Card

The expectation of most people is that this card should tick all the boxes since it combines plenty of Business-related features along with some very useful travel benefits.

If you have a lot of business spend to put into the card and are likely to utilise the softer benefits such as adding up to 99 Employee Card Members free of charge, up to 55 days cash flow or insurance protections, then this card may be for you.

American Express is offering 350,000 Bonus Membership Rewards Points + $875 Credit1 for those who apply for the American Express Platinum Business Card by 3 November 2026 and spend $12,000 within the first 3 months from approval. T&Cs apply. Available for new American Express Card Members only.

American Express Platinum Business: rewards, cash flow and travel benefits

Source review: 17 September 2026. This information is general in nature. It does not take your personal circumstances into account. Fees, benefits and eligibility conditions can change; check the issuer's current terms before applying or relying on a benefit. Businesses should obtain their own tax and financial advice.

A premium business charge card

The American Express Platinum Business is aimed at businesses with substantial card spending and frequent travel. The Point Hacks product guide records a $1,750 annual fee, 2.25 Membership Rewards points per eligible dollar on most purchases and one point per dollar at government bodies. Earning is uncapped in the reviewed material. The card earns Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points, giving access to transfer partners that include Qantas Frequent Flyer, Velocity, KrisFlyer and Cathay.

It is a charge card with flexible spending power, also described as no pre-set spending limit. That wording does not mean unlimited spending. Purchasing capacity adapts to factors such as transaction patterns, payment history and financial information. The product can provide up to 55 days to pay, depending on transaction and statement timing, but the normal charge-card terms and the due date still matter. These features can assist working-capital timing only when the business has reliable cash flow and pays according to the account terms.

Membership Rewards and airline transfers

The points currency provides more flexibility than a card tied to one airline. The Membership Rewards guide explains how points can remain with American Express until the business chooses a participating airline, hotel or other redemption. The transfer-partner comparison is important because conversion rates differ. The 2.25 Membership Rewards earn rate should not be read as 2.25 airline points per dollar.

Ascent Premium's Qantas option is a notable distinction from many flexible rewards cards. The reviewed product guide calculates effective rates of 1.125 Qantas Points per eligible dollar and 0.75 KrisFlyer mile or Asia Mile per dollar for spending in the 2.25-point category. Ratios and partners can change, so the live transfer page should be checked before a large conversion. Transfers are generally irreversible and reward-seat availability should be confirmed first.

Employee cards, reporting and the Flexible Payment Option

The product guide records up to 99 employee cards without an additional annual card fee. Consolidating employee spending can accelerate points earning and make expense reporting simpler, but the primary account remains responsible for charges. A business should use card limits, internal approval rules and reconciliation controls rather than viewing additional cards only as a points opportunity.

The Flexible Payment Option can allow an eligible portion of the closing balance to be carried beyond the due date, up to an assigned limit. The reviewed guide cites a 23.99% annual interest rate, while also directing readers to their current statement and terms. That rate can change and carrying a balance can quickly outweigh the value of rewards. The feature is a borrowing facility within the charge-card account, not an extension of the normal interest-free period. Businesses should assess its cost before using it for cash-flow management.

Lounge access and travel services

The lounge package includes American Express Centurion and International lounges, Priority Pass and Plaza Premium access, plus Delta Sky Club access under Delta's eligible-flight conditions. The American Express lounge guide confirms that Platinum Business cardholders continue to have unlimited entry to the global Amex lounge network. Other networks require enrolment and apply their own rules. The KB contains conflicting historical guest-fee figures for Priority Pass, so this page does not state a fixed fee; check the current membership terms before bringing a guest.

American Express Travel also provides access to Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection. At participating properties, benefits can include breakfast, late checkout, an on-property credit or an upgrade where available. Prices should still be compared with direct rates, and the business should check whether a booking earns the hotel's own points or recognises existing status. These programs are booking channels with property-specific terms, not automatic discounts on every stay.

Hotel status and the missing personal travel credit

The reviewed source lists Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite, Hilton Honors Gold and Radisson Rewards Premium status, together with ALL Accor+ Explorer membership. The Platinum elite-status guide explains the program benefits and registration requirements. Status can provide useful upgrades or late checkout, but many benefits are subject to availability and may duplicate status already earned through travel.

The Business Platinum does not include the $450 annual travel credit historically associated with the personal Platinum. That difference is material when comparing the two annual fees. A business should value the products using their actual recurring benefits rather than assuming that every benefit carrying the Platinum name applies to both versions.

Insurance and business eligibility

The card includes several insurance categories, including travel insurance when the return trip is paid with the card, purchase cover, Buyer's Advantage and loss-damage-waiver cover. Activation varies by cover. The business-card insurance guide gives context, but the current Platinum Business PDS controls eligibility, insured people, age limits, pre-existing conditions, exclusions and claim limits. Insurance should not be relied on merely because a transaction appears on the account.

The product page lists criteria including being at least 18, meeting residency requirements, having an acceptable credit history, operating a trading business with a valid ABN or ACN and being a director, controller or eligible owner. The source contains both a $75,000 annual-business-revenue requirement and a separate reference to $75,000 personal gross income, so applicants should use the current issuer application criteria rather than treating either archived sentence as definitive.

Introductory offers, tax and overall fit

Introductory offers for this product can be large and can combine Membership Rewards points with a statement credit. They also change frequently, require substantial eligible spend and may exclude people who held an Australian-issued American Express card within a stated lookback period. This mirror does not preserve a promotional total. Check the live deadline, the precise new-card-member rule, eligible transactions and the timing of every instalment.

Rewards generated by business expenditure can also raise accounting and tax questions. The Point Hacks guide to tax and GST considerations discusses the relevant ATO guidance and circumstances that deserve professional review. The fact that a card fee or purchase relates to a business does not determine its tax treatment on its own.

Platinum Business is most likely to fit a business that can use the employee-card controls, flexible Membership Rewards partners, lounge access and hotel benefits while paying balances without expensive interest. The $1,750 annual fee requires recurring operational or travel value, not only a first-year bonus. A business with modest spend, limited travel or a need for low-cost borrowing may find the premium package difficult to justify.

Detailed card snapshot and dated offer

Feature Reviewed position at 17 September 2026
Product type Business charge card with flexible spending power
Annual fee $1,750 a year
Everyday and utility earn 2.25 Membership Rewards points per eligible $1
Government spend 1 Membership Rewards point per $1
Points program Ascent Premium, including Qantas transfers
Employee cards Up to 99 without another annual card fee
Cash-flow period Up to 55 days, depending on transaction and statement timing
Flexible Payment Option Eligible carried balance up to its limit; 23.99% p.a. recorded in the guide
Foreign transaction fee 3.5% of the converted amount
Lounge package Centurion/International Amex lounges, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and eligible Delta Sky Clubs
Personal-Platinum travel credit Not included

At the review date, the Business Platinum guide displayed 350,000 bonus Membership Rewards points plus an $875 credit for eligible new Amex members applying by 3 November 2026 and spending $12,000 in the first three months. This is a large spend target. A business should exclude GST, fees, cash equivalents and other ineligible transactions when planning it, and should never accelerate spending simply to reach the threshold.

The usual reviewed exclusion applies to someone who held an Australian-issued American Express card in the preceding 18 months. The precise business-card terms control, and approval remains separate from bonus eligibility.

Rewards earning and transfer mathematics

Ascent Premium lets the business hold points with American Express and choose a partner later. The product guide records Qantas at 2:1 and KrisFlyer or Cathay at 3:1, producing the following effective rates on ordinary 2.25-point spend:

Eligible business spend Membership Rewards Qantas at 2:1 KrisFlyer/Cathay at 3:1
$25,000 56,250 28,125 18,750
$75,000 168,750 84,375 56,250
$100,000 225,000 112,500 75,000

Government spending earns one Membership Rewards point per dollar, equivalent to 0.5 Qantas Point or about 0.33 KrisFlyer mile at those ratios. The guide specifically notes that eligible gas, water, electricity and insurance transactions can earn the 2.25-point rate, which may be valuable for a business with large operating expenses. Merchant coding and exclusions still matter.

Transfers are normally irreversible. Check partner ratios, recipient details, award availability and points expiry first. The headline 2.25 earn rate should never be described as 2.25 airline points per dollar.

Employee cards, responsibility and reporting

Up to 99 employee cards can channel eligible spending into the primary Membership Rewards balance and itemise expenses by card. The insurance and reporting guide describes exports to Excel, Quicken and MYOB and automatic MYOB transaction syncing. These can reduce reconciliation work, but the controls around them remain the business's responsibility.

Employee card members must be adults under the reviewed conditions, and the business and primary member remain responsible for their spending. Useful internal controls include card limits, merchant policies, receipt requirements, prompt cancellation when employment ends and regular review of unusual transactions. A points benefit does not justify weak expense governance.

From 1 October 2026, additional or employee cardholders lose the separate Priority Pass membership previously attached to one nominated employee card. This reduces the value of distributing travel benefits across staff even though the underlying employee-card program continues.

Cash flow and the Flexible Payment Option

No pre-set spending limit means transaction capacity adjusts according to use, payment history, the business's credit profile and financial information. It does not promise that any transaction will be approved. Up to 55 days of cash flow depends on when a purchase occurs in the statement cycle and on paying according to the charge-card terms.

The Flexible Payment Option lets an eligible business carry part of the closing balance up to its assigned limit. The guide records 23.99% p.a. on the unpaid amount. At that rate, rewards cannot compensate for prolonged borrowing. The feature may smooth a short timing mismatch, but it should be compared with an overdraft or other business finance on total cost, security and repayment flexibility.

Lounge access and the 2026 rule changes

Business Platinum retains unlimited access to the global Centurion and International American Express lounge network. The reviewed card guide also lists Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Delta Sky Club access under each program's conditions. It does not include the personal Platinum's $450 travel credit.

The July 2026 lounge-change report updates older articles:

Personal and Business Platinum keep unlimited global Centurion access after February 2027. The removal on 15 February 2027 applies to Qantas Ultimate, not these premium charge cards.

Hotels and premium travel booking

Fine Hotels + Resorts can include breakfast, guaranteed 4pm checkout, noon check-in where available, an upgrade where available, Wi-Fi and an on-property benefit often around US$100. The Hotel Collection generally requires a minimum two-night stay and may include an upgrade plus US$100 to spend at the property. Business fares through American Express Travel may have negotiated pricing with selected partner airlines, but every fare should still be compared with direct booking and its conditions.

The card guide lists Hilton Honors Gold, Marriott Bonvoy Gold, Radisson Rewards Premium and ALL Accor+ Explorer. Accor+ includes Stay Plus night benefits and dining savings under its terms. Enrolment is required, upgrades are often subject to availability and the value falls when the business traveller already holds the same or better status.

Insurance, eligibility and tax cautions

The guide lists Travel Insurance, Card Purchase Cover, Buyer's Advantage Cover, Monthly Business Expenses Cover and Loss Damage Waiver Cover, including a recorded maximum of $125,000 for eligible rental-vehicle loss or damage. Activation differs: travel cover requires an eligible return trip paid with the card, while purchase covers require eligible items. Employee-card travellers may qualify when their payment and relationship meet the Business Platinum insurance terms. The PDS controls limits, excesses, age, pre-existing conditions and insured people.

The source material inconsistently describes the $75,000 test as annual business revenue in one place and personal gross income in another. It consistently requires a trading ABN or ACN and an eligible owner, controller or director. Applicants should use the current application criteria rather than resolving that inconsistency themselves.

Business use does not automatically make every fee deductible or every points redemption tax-free. The tax and GST guide explains why ownership of the points, private use, reimbursements and record keeping matter. Obtain advice for the business's actual structure and use.

Business Platinum versus personal Platinum

Decision factor Business Platinum Personal Platinum
Annual fee $1,750 $1,450
Core earn 2.25 Membership Rewards points per eligible $1 2.25 points per eligible $1
Employee/additional cards Up to 99 Up to four in reviewed comparison
Flexible Payment Option Included for eligible balances Charge-card balance generally due in full
Annual $450 travel credit No Yes
Dining credit Not included in the reviewed dining offer Dated personal-card benefit subject to enrolment
Premium lounges/hotels Broadly similar core package Broadly similar core package

The business card earns its extra $300 fee through employee-card scale, expense management and payment flexibility rather than a richer personal credit package. A sole trader with little staff spend may find the personal product easier to justify, subject to using it only for appropriate purposes and meeting its terms.

Practical questions answered

Does Business Platinum include the personal card's $450 travel credit?

No. The reviewed Business Platinum guide identifies the absence of the personal card's $450 annual travel credit as a key product difference. Compare the $1,750 annual fee with employee-card administration, points, travel benefits and insurance the business will actually use rather than importing a benefit from the personal Platinum card.

Do 2.25 Membership Rewards points equal 2.25 Qantas Points?

No. Membership Rewards points must first be converted at the current transfer ratio. At the reviewed 2:1 Qantas ratio, 2.25 Membership Rewards points become 1.125 Qantas Points per eligible dollar; a 3:1 airline partner would produce only 0.75 airline miles. Always calculate the destination currency before comparing cards.

Are all 99 employee cards free of another annual card fee?

The reviewed guide says the account can have up to 99 employee cards without an additional card fee. The business remains responsible for their transactions, controls and reconciliation, and other fees can still apply. The operational value therefore depends on spending policies, card limits and prompt review of employee activity.

Does a nominated employee retain Priority Pass after 30 September 2026?

No. The announced change limits Priority Pass membership to the primary Business Platinum member from 1 October 2026. A business that previously valued access for a nominated employee should remove that value from renewal calculations covering the later period and verify the live lounge terms before travel.

How many free Centurion guests can the primary member bring?

From 8 July 2026, the reviewed rule permits one complimentary guest travelling on the same flight, subject to the lounge's access terms and capacity. Further guests should not be assumed free. The primary member still needs an eligible same-day itinerary and must meet the entry conditions at the specific lounge.

Is the Flexible Payment Option interest free?

No. The reviewed guide records 23.99% p.a. on eligible balances carried beyond the due date. Interest at that level can quickly exceed the value of points and lounge benefits, so cash-flow value should be calculated after finance costs rather than treating deferred payment as a free extension.

Does no pre-set limit mean unlimited business spending?

No. Purchasing capacity is dynamic and American Express can approve or decline a transaction based on account history, payment behaviour, current exposure and other factors. A large planned purchase should not rely on the phrase alone; check available capacity or contact American Express before committing to a supplier payment.

Does the insurance automatically cover every employee trip?

No. The traveller must fall within the policy's eligible-person definition, the trip must meet the payment and return-trip conditions, and limits and exclusions still apply. Review the current PDS for each trip type, especially for pre-existing conditions, age limits, rental vehicles and mixed business-private travel.

Is the annual fee automatically tax deductible?

No universal tax conclusion follows from holding a business card. Deductibility can depend on the business purpose, entity structure, private use and how benefits are treated. Keep records that separate business and personal expenditure and obtain advice from a qualified tax professional for the business's circumstances.

Does the February 2027 Centurion change remove Business Platinum access?

No. The reviewed announcement says personal and Business Platinum retain unlimited global Centurion Lounge access, while Qantas Ultimate loses Australian access from 15 February 2027. Guest limits, same-day travel requirements, capacity controls and individual lounge rules still apply to Platinum entry.

A normal-year value test

Exclude the one-off offer and compare the $1,750 fee with benefits the business will actually use: employee-spend consolidation, points from normal operating costs, lounge visits, hotel benefits, insurance and any genuine cash-flow value. Deduct foreign-currency fees, interest and administrative risk. Business Platinum is strongest where substantial controlled spend and frequent travel already exist; it is difficult to justify when the bonus is the only large source of value.
