NSW Submetering Grant - Round 2
Status checked 21 October 2026: The NSW Government says Round 2 is closed. Applications closed at 5 pm AEST on 30 April 2026. This page describes the former round and is not a current application invitation. Check the NSW Government program page for official status and any later opportunities.
What Round 2 supported
The grant helped eligible NSW businesses install and commission permanent energy submeters to understand consumption at system or subsystem level. It offered up to $20,000, covering up to 50% of eligible project costs. Submetering can make electricity, gas and process loads more visible, helping a business identify energy waste, target maintenance or efficiency work, and establish a baseline for later measurement.
The former guidelines set the detailed eligibility and cost rules. Published criteria included a NSW business site, at least $200,000 in annual energy spending or 3,600 GJ of equivalent annual on-site use, operational control and authority to install the meters. Applicants needed itemised quotes and a project plan. These were conditions of the closed round and should not be assumed for another program.
Plan the metering for a decision
A useful design starts with the operational question: which plant, process or building load needs to be understood and what action would follow? Specify meter location, measurement range, interval, data access, communications, commissioning checks and ongoing ownership. Align the new data with production and operating records so changes can be interpreted correctly.
Northmore Gordon can support metering strategy, energy assessment and measurement and verification for a site. These services can support an investment decision or future funding application; they do not reopen Round 2.
What was the NSW Submetering Grant Round 2?
It was a closed NSW grant round supporting installation and commissioning of permanent energy submeters at eligible business sites. The NSW Government says applications closed at 5 pm AEST on 30 April 2026.
Who could apply under Round 2?
The former guidelines targeted qualifying NSW businesses with operational control of the site and authority to install meters. Published thresholds included at least $200,000 annual energy spending or 3,600 GJ annual on-site energy use. The full eligibility tests belonged to the closed round; do not assume they apply to any later opportunity.
What could Round 2 funding be used for?
It supported eligible permanent submetering equipment and associated installation and commissioning work, subject to the former guidelines and funding deed. A proposed device or software item was not automatically approved merely because it related to energy data.
How much funding was available?
Round 2 offered up to $20,000 per eligible project, covering up to 50% of eligible costs. These are historical round terms, not funding currently open for new applications.
Why is submetering useful for energy management?
Submeters can show how specific processes, equipment or buildings use energy. Paired with operating context and data quality checks, that information can support maintenance, efficiency decisions and more credible performance baselines.
How can submetering support future efficiency or certificate work?
Measured system-level data can help identify and quantify an upgrade opportunity. Whether any later project qualifies for a certificate or another grant depends on the applicable current method, baseline, evidence, timing and double-counting rules; the meter alone does not create an entitlement.
How can Northmore Gordon help after Round 2 closed?
Northmore Gordon can assess metering needs, design a data and commissioning plan, analyse energy use and support measurement and verification. This work can inform a future investment or funding case, but the 2026 Round 2 application window is closed.
What should a business prepare for a future metering opportunity?
Document the site, energy bills, system diagram, existing meter coverage, operational decisions, candidate meter points, data-access arrangements, costed quotes and project timetable. Check the future program's live guidelines and deadline before treating funding as available.
What happens after a funded submeter is installed?
Under the former NSW funding arrangements, a recipient had to deliver the project and provide evidence under its funding deed before payment. Operationally, the business should validate the data, assign monitoring responsibilities and use the readings to test whether planned decisions and improvements materialise.
