Carbon Capture Technologies Program – Round 2

Historical grant notice, checked 23 October 2026: The Australian Government's Carbon Capture Technologies Program Round 2 is closed to applications. Its published guidelines set a 5 pm AEST closing time on 6 May 2026. This page preserves the former opportunity and is not an invitation to submit an application.

What Round 2 supported

The program aimed to advance emerging carbon dioxide capture, utilisation and removal technologies through research, development, pilot and demonstration projects. The Australian Government committed approximately $32.618 million over 2026–27 to 2030–31 for the round. The administrator described grants from $1 million to $10 million for eligible projects, subject to the grant opportunity guidelines and assessment.

Examples included novel capture or utilisation for hard-to-abate sectors, direct air capture, enhanced rock weathering, biomass carbon removal with durable storage and mineral carbonation. Conventional land-based approaches without technological intervention were excluded. Applicant type, Australian registration and tax status, eligible expenditure, project scope and co-contribution were governed by the Round 2 guidelines.

How to use the historical terms

These amounts and tests describe a closed round. They do not establish that funding remains available or that a later opportunity will use the same criteria. The Australian Government program page currently says Round 2 is closed; the linked grant opportunity guidelines record the application deadline and detailed terms.

For an emerging carbon-management project, document the technology, pilot site, baseline emissions, intended capture or removal outcome, permanence evidence, costs, partners and delivery risks. Then check the administrator's current grant listings before assuming a new round exists or committing to application work.

Can organisations still apply for Carbon Capture Technologies Program Round 2?

No. The Australian Government's current program page marks Round 2 closed. Its grant opportunity guidelines set the application deadline at 5 pm AEST on 6 May 2026. Historical eligibility and application instructions on this page do not reopen the round.

What was the purpose and scale of Round 2?

Round 2 supported research, development, pilot and demonstration of emerging carbon dioxide capture, utilisation and removal technologies. The Australian Government committed approximately $32.618 million for the opportunity over 2026–27 to 2030–31, with historical grants from $1 million to $10 million subject to the guidelines.

Which technologies did the closed round address?

The administrator listed examples such as novel industrial carbon capture or utilisation, direct air capture, enhanced rock weathering, biomass carbon removal with durable storage and mineral carbonation. Its guidelines excluded conventional land-based approaches without technological intervention. These are descriptions of the former round, not approval of a new proposal.

Did every carbon-reduction project qualify?

No. Round 2 focused on emerging capture, utilisation and removal technologies, with specific applicant, project, expenditure and assessment tests. A general emissions-efficiency project did not qualify merely because it reduced emissions. The closed-round guidelines provide the authoritative historical rules.

What funding and co-contribution terms applied?

The closed opportunity offered grants from $1 million to $10 million, subject to eligible project expenditure and co-contribution requirements in the published guidelines. A headline amount or percentage did not guarantee an award. Any future round may have different terms.

Can an organisation use Round 2's old application form for a new project?

No. Round 2 closed on 6 May 2026. An organisation should check the Australian Government's current grant listings and any newly published guidelines before preparing a submission. The former forms and assessment dates are historical evidence only.

What evidence is useful when preparing a carbon-management project?

Describe the technology and its development stage, proposed site and partners, baseline emissions, expected capture or removal, permanence and measurement approach, project costs, financing and delivery risks. This project file helps assess fit against any genuinely open opportunity without assuming the closed round still funds it.

Where can readers verify the Round 2 status and terms?

Use the Australian Government Carbon Capture Technologies Program Round 2 page for its current closed status and the linked grant opportunity guidelines for the historical deadline and eligibility terms. Recheck the administrator before relying on a later funding announcement.
