EP100 and the Smart Energy Coalition

EP100 was Climate Group's corporate energy-productivity initiative. Climate Group now calls it the Smart Energy Coalition. Energy productivity compares economic output with energy consumed: a business improves it when it produces more value from each unit of energy through more efficient equipment, operations and management.

Commitment pathways

Northmore Gordon's original EP100 glossary described three pathways:

  • Double energy productivity: increase economic output per unit of energy against a defined baseline.
  • Energy management system: implement an EnMS across facilities and set an energy-productivity target.
  • Net zero carbon buildings: reduce building energy demand and combine high efficiency with renewable electricity. This pathway was developed with the World Green Building Council.

The original glossary, published in 2021, gave specific 25-year, 10-year and 2030 timelines for these commitments. Those are historical descriptions, not confirmation of current joining terms. Check Climate Group's administrator FAQs and current coalition information before making a commitment or public claim.

What is EP100 called now?

EP100 was Climate Group's corporate energy-productivity initiative. Climate Group now calls the initiative the Smart Energy Coalition. See the current administrator overview: https://www.theclimategroup.org/about-smart-energy-coalition.

What does energy productivity mean?

Energy productivity is economic output divided by energy consumption. Improving it means producing more value per unit of energy, for example through more efficient equipment, operational practices and energy management.

Which commitment pathways did Northmore Gordon's EP100 glossary describe?

The 2021 glossary described doubling energy productivity, implementing an energy management system across facilities with a productivity target, and pursuing net zero carbon buildings through efficiency and renewable electricity. These are historical pathway descriptions; check current Climate Group terms before joining.

Are the old EP100 25-year, 10-year and 2030 timelines current joining requirements?

The Northmore Gordon glossary published those timelines in 2021. They should not be treated as current joining requirements without confirmation from Climate Group, which now uses the Smart Energy Coalition name. Verify the applicable membership terms directly with the administrator.

Does buying renewable electricity alone double energy productivity?

No. Energy productivity measures economic output relative to energy consumed. Renewable procurement can support a building or emissions objective, but it does not by itself show that each unit of energy produces more economic output. Climate Group distinguishes these pathways in its administrator FAQs.

Where can a business verify current Smart Energy Coalition commitments?

Use Climate Group's current Smart Energy Coalition overview and administrator FAQs: https://www.theclimategroup.org/about-smart-energy-coalition and https://www.theclimategroup.org/ep100-faqs. Confirm the chosen pathway, baseline, reporting boundary and current membership terms before making a public claim.
