Climate Active

Climate Active is the Australian Government program that has certified voluntary carbon-neutral claims for organisations, products, services, buildings, events and precincts. Participants have used an emissions inventory, reduction actions, eligible instruments and public reporting to support their claims.

Transition update, checked 26 October 2026: The Australian Government announced on 24 July 2026 that certification of voluntary climate claims through Climate Active will end. Certification is proposed to end on 30 June 2027 after a transition period. The official notice says the Climate Active brand, trade marks, consultant register, website and current Carbon Neutral standards will be discontinued. Check administrator guidance before making a new certification plan or continuing use of a certification claim.

Emissions accounting, physical reduction planning, renewable electricity attributes and carbon credits remain separate questions. A Climate Active certificate does not itself satisfy NGER or other mandatory reporting obligations; apply the relevant framework to the entity, period and claim.

Is Climate Active certification continuing indefinitely?

No. On 24 July 2026 the Australian Government announced that certification of voluntary climate claims through Climate Active will end. The official notice proposes 30 June 2027 after a transition period. Check the administrator's current guidance for the final arrangements.

What did Climate Active certify?

The program has certified voluntary carbon-neutral claims for organisations, products, services, buildings, events and precincts. It used emissions inventories, reduction actions, eligible instruments and public reporting under its standards. A past certification does not by itself establish a current status or claim right.

What should an existing participant check during the transition?

Confirm its certification and reporting period, current program status, evidence and retirement records, public wording, and the administrator's guidance on transition and use of the brand. The official notice says the brand, trade marks, consultant register, website and current Carbon Neutral standards will be discontinued.

Does Climate Active certification replace mandatory emissions reporting?

No. Voluntary certification and mandatory obligations such as NGER or sustainability reporting have separate entities, thresholds, periods and methods. Determine each obligation under its own framework.
