TSXi Soft Starters

Our TSXi brings full three-phase SCR control, an internal bypass and adaptive starting and stopping to demanding fixed-speed motor applications. With 24–1250 A nominal selections, it is suited to industrial motor-control centres, OEM panels, conveyors, crushers, mills, compressors and pumping systems where control, monitoring and integration matter.

Control that follows the application

Choose constant-current, current-ramp or adaptive starting. Stopping options include adaptive control, timed voltage ramp, DC brake and soft brake. Adaptive control adjusts acceleration or deceleration to load behaviour; it does not remove the need to size the starter for actual current and duty. Active braking and inside-delta arrangements have installation restrictions in the manual.

A dual-order thermal model tracks heat across starts and operating cycles. Protection responses can be configured as trip, soft trip, warning or log where supported. We provide dual parameter sets, metering and monitoring, a 384-event log with real-time-clock timestamps, USB parameter backup and firmware updating. Protection settings, defaults and parameter IDs remain in the source-specific tables below.

Select supply, configuration and duty together

Our current website specifies V7: 380–690 VAC for Australia and V5: 200–525 VAC for New Zealand. C1 provides separate 110–120 VAC or 220–240 VAC control supplies; C2 24 VAC/VDC is optional. The brochure's broad “Standard ANZ” label does not replace the separate regional voltage-code choices.

The 22 collected website selections link B-suffix, V7/C1-named sheets. Their first-page application forms leave industry, application, environment, voltage, motor size/FLC and starting current/time blank. We retain all model identities and source associations without filling those fields from a model number.

Use the manual's conditional IEC and NEMA tables for selection. At 1,000 m and 40°C, for example, 0024B is 24 A at AC53b 3.0-10:350, but 16 A at 4.0-20:340. Nominal current alone does not establish a heavy-start rating. The manual also contains C-suffix non-bypassed models and external-bypass arrangements; these are family reference configurations, not additional B models invented for the current website list. C models require the stated external bypass to achieve the bypassed ratings.

Mounting, protection and integration

The model-sheet protection scope is IP20 for 0024B–0135B and IP00 for 0184B–1250B. Optional finger guards do not make every starter IP20 by default. Allow model-specific space, cooling and derating for temperature above 40°C and altitude above 1,000 m. Dimension, mass, clearance, terminal and fuse tables remain edition-specific below.

Optional communication interfaces include Modbus RTU/TCP, Profinet, EtherNet/IP, Profibus and DeviceNet for PLC/SCADA integration. A pumping Smart Card adds application-specific inputs and functions; it is an option, not standard equipment on every unit. The manual permits a maximum of one expansion card at a time. Remote keypad options, ground-fault-enabled module variants and pump functions must be selected by the exact accessory code.

Operation and maintenance references

The 108-page TSXi user manual covers safety/model selection (PDF 5–9), IEC/NEMA ratings, dimensions and accessories (10–16), protection/fuses (17–24), specifications (25–26), installation (27–38), setup and logs (39–45), keypad (46–48), operation (49–60), parameter reference (61–95) and troubleshooting (96–105). Blank/end-contact pages add no model ratings. Tables below preserve the data; wiring diagrams, curves and complete procedures remain in the linked original.

Inside-delta detection is supported, but Adaptive Control, Jog, Brake and PowerThrough are not supported in inside-delta operation according to the manual. Emergency/Fire Mode and PowerThrough are exceptional operating modes. The manual warns that Emergency Mode ignores all trips and warnings, disables protection, can compromise starter or motor life, and voids the product warranty. PowerThrough uses two-phase control after an SCR fault, is available only in-line, and does not support adaptive starting or stopping. This feature is not a declaration of certified fire-pump compliance; read the manual's warnings and confirm the system design with us. Do not turn disabling protection into normal operating guidance.

Source differences to confirm

The sheets specify mains tolerance ±10%, while the brochure/manual use +10%/−15% in their supply specification. Semiconductor/HRC coordination labels are reversed between the sheet and manual. The brochure labels programmable input B 13,14 on PDF 12 and 13,15 on PDF 14. We retain those source statements without issuing a guessed wiring or fuse instruction.

The model sheets print 61.0 kg for 0835B–0940B, while the brochure and manual give 51.0 kg. Other large-model weights also differ between editions; use a confirmed outline and lifting weight for the actual unit. The brochure's accessory range includes 0654B, absent from its model table, and the model sheets use different accessory-range labels. Confirm the exact guard kit rather than inferring equivalence.

Source row Display Possible cause/Suggested solution
1 2 Phase - Damaged SCR This message is displayed if the soft starter tripped on “ Lx-Tx shorted” during the pre-start checks and PowerThrough is enabled. It indicates that the starter now operates in PowerThough mode (2-phase control only). Check for either a shorted SCR or a short within the bypass contactor. Related parameters: 6S
2 Battery/clock A verification error has occurred on the real time clock, or the backup battery voltage is low. If the battery is low and the power is off, date/time settings will be lost. The soft starter will continue to soft start and soft stop correctly. Reprogram the date and time. The battery is not removable. In order to replace the battery, the main control PCB must be replaced. Related parameters: 6T
3 Bypass overload This trip is not adjustable. Bypass overload protection protects the soft starter from severe operating overloads while running. The soft starter will trip if it detects overcurrent at 600% of the contactor rating. Related parameters: None
4 Current at Stop The soft starter has detected current at a time when no current is expected (Ready, Not Ready or Tripped states).  If the motor is connected inside delta (six-wire connection) and no main contactor is installed, a shorted SCR may be passing current to the motor. Related parameters: None

Manual · PDF 97 · Trip messages

Manual source · PDF 97

Source-specific values and full associated procedure/conditions. Physical alternatives are separate options, not paired columns.

Source row Display Possible cause/Suggested solution
1 Current imbalance Current imbalance can be caused by problems with the motor, the environment or the installation, such as:  An imbalance in the incoming mains voltage  A problem with the motor windings  A light load on the motor  A phase loss on input terminals L1, L2 or L3 during Run mode  An SCR that has failed open circuit. A failed SCR can only be definitely diagnosed by replacing the SCR and checking the starter's performance. Related parameters: 5A, 5B, 6C
2 Current Read Err Lx Where 'X' is 1, 2 or 3. Internal fault (PCB fault). The output from the CT circuit is not close enough to zero when the SCRs are turned off. Contact your local supplier for advice. Related parameters: None
3 Depth Sensor The smart card has detected a fault with the depth sensor. Related parameters: 30L, 36C
4 EEPROM fail An error occurred loading data from the EEPROM to RAM when the keypad powered up. If the problem persists, contact your local distributor. Related parameters: None
5 Excess start time Excess start time trip can occur in the following conditions:  parameter 1B Motor Full Load Current is not appropriate for the motor  parameter 2D Current Limit has been set too low  parameter 2B Start Ramp Time has been set greater than the setting for 5O Excess Start Time  parameter 2B Start Ramp Time is set too short for a high inertia load when using Adaptive Control Related parameters: 1B, 2B, 2D, 3D, 3F
6 Firing Fail Px Where 'X' is phase 1, 2 or 3. The SCR did not fire as expected. The SCR may be faulty or there may be an internal wiring fault. Related parameters: None
7 FLC too high The soft starter can be used on a motor with a higher full load current (FLC) if it is connected inside delta, or if a non-bypassed soft starter is installed with an external bypass contactor.  If this trip occurs when the soft starter is installed inside delta, the soft starter may not be correctly detecting the connection. Set parameter 20F Motor Connection to ‘Inside Delta’.  If the starter is a non-bypassed model and was previously used with an external bypass contactor, but parameter 20G External Bypass has now been set to ‘Disable’, the FLC may be above the maximum non-bypassed rating. Check that the non- bypassed rating of the soft starter is suitable for the motor, then set parameter 1B Motor Full Load Current to match the motor’s FLC. Related parameters: 1B, 20F, 20G

Source row Symptom Probable Cause
1 The soft starter does not respond to commands from the control inputs.  The soft starter will only accept commands from the inputs if parameter 1A Command Source is set to Digital Input. Check the setting of 1A.  The control wiring may be incorrect. Check that the remote start, stop and reset inputs are configured correctly (see on Start/Stop page 27 for details).  The signals to the remote inputs may be incorrect. Test the signalling by activating each input signal in turn.
2 The soft starter does not respond to a start command from either the keypad or the digital inputs.  The soft starter may be waiting for the restart delay to elapse. The length of the restart delay is controlled by parameter 5P Restart Delay.  The motor may be too hot to permit a start. The soft starter will only permit a start when it calculates that the motor has sufficient thermal capacity to complete the start successfully. Wait for the motor to cool before attempting another start.  The reset input may be active. If the reset input is active, the starter will not operate.  The soft starter may be waiting for control signals via the communications network (parameter 1A Command Source = Network).  The soft starter may be waiting for a scheduled auto-start (parameter 1A Command Source = Clock).
3 Erratic and noisy motor operation.  If the soft starter is connected to the motor using inside delta configuration, the soft starter may not be correctly detecting the connection. Contact your local supplier for advice.
4 Remote keypad shows message "awaiting data" The keypad is not receiving data from the control PCB. Check the cable connection.
5 The soft starter does not control the motor correctly during starting.  Start performance may be unstable when using a low Motor Full Load Current setting (parameter 1B).  Power factor correction (PFC) capacitors must be installed on the supply side of the soft starter and must be disconnected during starting and stopping. To use the soft starter to control power factor correction, connect the PFC contactor to a programmable relay set to Run.  High levels of harmonics on the mains supply can affect soft starter performance. If variable speed drives are installed nearby, check they are properly grounded and filtered.

Source row Symptom Probable Cause
1 Motor does not reach full speed.  If the start current is too low, the motor will not produce enough torque to accelerate to full speed. The soft starter may trip on excess start time. NOTE Make sure the motor starting parameters are appropriate for the application and that you are using the intended motor starting profile. If a programmable input is set to Motor Set Select, check that the corresponding input is in the expected state.  The load may be jammed. Check the load for severe overloading or a locked rotor situation.
2 Soft stop ends too quickly.  The soft stop settings may not be appropriate for the motor and load. Review the soft stop settings.  If the motor is very lightly loaded, soft stop will have limited effect.
3 After selecting Adaptive Control the motor used an ordinary start and/or the second start was different to the first.  The first Adaptive Control start is actually 'Constant Current' so that the starter can learn from the motor characteristics. Subsequent starts use Adaptive Control.
4 PowerThrough does not operate when selected.  The starter will trip on Lx-Tx Shorted on the first start attempt after control power is applied. PowerThrough will not operate if control power is cycled between starts.
5 Parameter settings cannot be stored.  Make sure you are saving the new value by pressing the button MENU/ENTER after adjusting a parameter setting. If you press RESET/EXIT, the change will not be saved. The soft starter does not display a confirmation.  Check that the adjustment lock (parameter 10G) is set to Read & Write. If the adjustment lock is set to Read Only, settings can be viewed but not changed.
6 USB Full  The USB drive may not have enough free space available for the selected function.  The file system on the USB drive may not be compatible with the soft starter. The soft starter supports FAT32 file systems. The soft starter's USB functions are not compatible with NTFS file systems.
