Te3 2-Speed Cast Iron Motors — TEFC

Our Te3 two-speed motors give centrifugal pumps and fans a choice of two operating speeds in a robust cast iron frame. Designed for variable torque loads, the range combines continuous-duty operation, Class F insulation and a top-mounted terminal box with four pole and winding configurations.

We publish an overall output range of 0.12–17 kW, covering the low- and high-speed outputs. Choose the paired ratings that suit your application below, or talk to us about other pole combinations, output torques and supply requirements.

Our MONCI-032015 Monarch catalogue, page 7, contains the two-speed performance schedule linked from this product. Its 43 rows each describe one high/low-speed pairing. They are catalogue configurations, not 86 separate motors or a list of currently available stock codes.

The figures are typical full-load performance at 415 V, 50 Hz. High- and low-speed current, efficiency and power factor stay with their respective output and speed. Power factor is printed as a percentage; weight is for the foot-mounted motor. The May 2026 Te3 catalogue does not provide a replacement paired two-speed schedule, so we retain the dated figures here for selection discussions. Confirm the supplied motor's rating and availability with us.

Construction and operation

Our linked catalogues describe the shared cast iron motor construction: an integrally footed frame, cast iron endshields, machined mating surfaces and an external cooling fan beneath a pressed-steel cover. The rotor uses a pressure die-cast aluminium cage and a high-tensile steel shaft. Insulated electromagnetic steel laminations and resin-impregnated, double-enamelled copper windings form the stator assembly; the catalogues describe the windings as tropicalised.

The standard finish combines an epoxy red oxide primer with two matt acrylic resin coats. Electro-zinc-plated hardware is standard in the catalogue description, with stainless steel fasteners available as an option. A stainless steel rating plate carries the motor details and bearing information. Standard shaft seals are V-rings; Gamma seals and Class H insulation belong to the separately described Severe Duty version.

Our catalogue terminal-box design uses neoprene gaskets and can be rotated in 90° steps through 360° for cable entry. Its IP66 terminal-box rating is separate from the IP55 motor rating on this product page.

Operating conditions and winding protection

The shared catalogue design conditions are −20°C to +40°C ambient and up to 1,000 metres altitude. Please discuss higher altitudes, adverse environments and other duties with us. The catalogues describe normal-torque Design N performance for direct-on-line starting, with other starting methods dependent on the load. Routine testing is described against AS60034.1 in the 2015 edition and IEC60034 in the 2026 edition.

Thermistors are optional on all two-speed motors in the 2015 catalogue. The standard PTC protection statements for frame D160 and larger in both catalogues expressly concern single-speed motors. Please specify the winding protection you need when ordering.

The 2015 bearing guide lists ball bearings at both ends for D80–D160, greased for life, and ball bearings with grease relief for D180–D225 at four poles and above. The frame-reference tables below preserve the printed bearing alternatives. Belt-drive suitability needs confirmation because the two catalogue editions give different guidance.

Connections and variable-speed drives

Use the connection diagram supplied for the selected tapped- or dual-wound motor. Our 2015 catalogue includes two-speed connection diagrams on page 2. The generic single-speed star/delta reconnection guidance elsewhere in the catalogues is not a wiring instruction for these two-speed windings.

Both catalogues describe VSD suitability as dependent on torque, speed, load and correct motor/drive installation. Please ask us to confirm the drive, winding connection, switching arrangement, cooling and protection for your application. The 2026 catalogue's loadability curves, 5–50 Hz variable-torque guidance and maximum-speed table are shared family references, not a confirmed operating envelope for every two-speed combination. That table has no eight-pole column. We do not derive an eight-pole speed limit from it. See the original guidance, pages 5–6.

Customise the motor to your application

Tell us about the load, installation and environment. Alongside other pole combinations, output torques and supplies, our linked catalogues describe the following options. Availability and compatibility depend on the chosen motor; these are not all standard fittings.

Requirement Catalogue options to discuss with us
Cooling and environment Airstream-rated IC418, forced cooling IC416, cooling-tower applications and anti-condensation heaters
Protection and monitoring Thermistors, winding and/or bearing RTDs, auxiliary terminal boxes for thermistor/heater/RTD terminations, insulated bearings and EDM protection on request
Shaft and control Double or non-standard shaft extensions, electromechanical fail-safe brakes, encoder/tacho and the catalogue-listed rotor brush option
Finish and enclosure Special paint systems/colours and stainless steel fasteners; the 2015 catalogue lists IP56, IP65 and IP66 enclosure options, subject to confirmation for the supplied motor
Special duties Other multispeed arrangements and a separately specified smoke-spill modification; other requirements on request

For a smoke-spill duty, we need to select and confirm the modified motor and tested arrangement. The catalogue smoke-spill statements concern direct-driven axial fans with IC418 cooling, not the standard IC411 motor described at the top of this page. The editions give different frame and time/temperature scopes, set out below.

Important differences between our linked catalogues

Our product page links both the March 2015 Monarch catalogue and the May 2026 Te3 catalogue. The newer document covers the wider Te3 family. We keep its general guidance separate from the older, explicitly two-speed schedule so that a family-level change is not silently applied to a particular motor.

Topic Published information How to use it for this product
Motor protection Product page and 2015 standard Monarch: IP55. May 2026 standard Te3 family: IP66 IP55 remains the website specification shown here; confirm the enclosure rating on the selected motor
Paired performance 43 two-speed rows in the 2015 catalogue. No equivalent paired schedule in May 2026 Use the dated paired table for reference; don't substitute single-speed kW, current or efficiency figures
Thermistors 2015: optional on all two-speed motors. Both editions' D160+ standard-PTC wording is for single-speed motors Specify two-speed winding protection when ordering
Belt drives 2015: direct or belt drive for two-pole frames up to D180 and four-pole/slower frames up to D355. May 2026: four- to eight-pole motors up to D400 are direct-drive only Confirm belt load, bearing selection and actual motor design with us before selecting a belt-driven arrangement
Two-speed dimensions 2015 page 2 says overall dimensions differ for frames 80–132; page 8's mounting/shaft note also excepts frames 80–132 Obtain the specific two-speed outline. Do not assume a generic frame drawing confirms the fit
C-flange range Website: D63–D132. Historical C-face dimensions: frames 80–132 No D63 two-speed drawing or performance row is supplied by these tables
Balance and vibration 2015: half-key dynamic balance Class N or better, AS1359.114. May 2026: G2.5 to ISO21940 and vibration Grade A to IEC60034-14 These are edition-specific family descriptions; confirm the ordered construction
Smoke-spill modification 2015: D80–D280, four-pole/slower, single/multispeed; 120 min at 200°C (F) or 30 min at 300°C (H), referencing AS1668.1:1998 and AS4429-1999. May 2026: D80–D315 and 120 min at 300°C (H), alongside 120 min at 200°C (F), referencing AS1668.1-2015 These historical and current family statements do not establish a smoke-spill rating for an unmodified two-speed motor; request the applicable test evidence
Efficiency and standards 2015 cites AS/NZS1359.5-2004 Table B2 where applicable; May 2026 references MEPS and IEC60034-30 where applicable The Te3 name alone does not establish an IE3 class for every two-speed pairing. Use the individual performance figures and confirm applicable compliance

Historical frame, shaft and mounting references

The following tables reproduce the 2015 catalogue's generic frame references for the frame sizes appearing in its two-speed performance schedule. They are not individual two-speed outline drawings. We have removed the separate single-speed output columns and larger frames that do not appear in the paired schedule, while retaining the original dimension symbols, values and bearing alternatives.

Confirm the outline before designing the installation. Frames 80–132 have an explicit two-speed exception in this catalogue. Page 2 refers to overall dimensions; page 8 also qualifies mounting and shaft dimensions. The tables below must not be used to resolve that ambiguity. The source does not print a general dimension-unit legend on these schedules; symbols and values are retained without assigning an inferred unit.

Dimensions are subject to change. The drawings define the lettered dimensions; use the linked source page for their locations. Bearing numbers in parentheses denote the catalogue's two-pole alternatives, not an instruction to choose bearings for either speed of a two-speed motor. The source notes lifting facilities on frame D100 and larger. Confirm the actual lifting arrangement and motor outline with us.

Product documents and source editions

Our product page currently labels its manual section “Currently Being Designed.” No separate two-speed manual, individual drawing, datasheet or software download is supplied there. The outline information available in the linked catalogues remains accessible above; ask us for the specific motor's drawing and connection information.

The single-speed performance schedules in the catalogues are not included as two-speed variants. The May 2026 family dimension tables are retained in the linked document rather than being combined with the 2015 two-speed ratings. The source editions' covers, contents, corporate pages and contact pages do not add motor ratings.

Company references

These company documents are separate from an individual motor’s performance or application approval.

Let's select the right two-speed motor

Send us the required high- and low-speed duty points, pole combination, supply, mounting arrangement and operating environment. For a replacement motor, include the existing rating plate and outline drawing. If the application uses belts, a VSD, special protection or a smoke-spill duty, include those requirements so we can confirm the motor, options and documentation together.
