Medicare can reduce the cost of eligible psychology treatment.

Under Better Access, eligible people with a diagnosed mental health disorder can receive a Medicare benefit for psychology treatment. You need a valid referral and usually a Mental Health Treatment Plan prepared by your usual GP or MyMedicare practice. Direct referrals from a psychiatrist or paediatrician may also qualify.

Bloom charges the full session fee. Medicare pays the applicable benefit when eligibility and item requirements are met, leaving an out-of-pocket gap.

What you need to know

A practical route from GP referral to treatment.

Clear expectations reduce uncertainty and help families, clients and referrers make a better-informed decision.

1

Discuss support with your referrer

Your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician considers whether Better Access is appropriate and prepares the required plan or referral.

2

Send Bloom the documents

Providing the signed referral, plan, Medicare details and contact information early helps avoid booking delays.

3

Begin personalised treatment

Your psychologist agrees goals and uses evidence-informed approaches suited to your needs, preferences and background.

4

Review progress

Bloom reports to the referrer as required, and the referrer considers whether a further course is appropriate within the annual limit.

Common questions

Clear answers before you book.

These answers are general. Bloom confirms individual requirements and clinical suitability before providing a service.

Ask the Bloom team

Is Bloom a bulk-billing psychology service?

No. Bloom charges the full appointment fee. If the service meets Medicare requirements, you may claim the applicable benefit and pay the remaining gap.

How many psychology sessions can Medicare support?

Under Better Access, an eligible person can receive Medicare benefits for up to 10 individual and up to 10 group mental health treatment services per calendar year. Referrals are generally arranged in courses, with review by the referring practitioner when further treatment is needed.

Do I need a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

Usually, you need a plan and valid written referral from your usual GP or MyMedicare practice. A psychiatrist or paediatrician can also provide a qualifying direct referral. A treatment plan by itself is not the referral.

Can I use Medicare for telehealth?

Eligible Better Access services can be delivered by video or phone when the relevant requirements are met. Bloom prioritises secure video telehealth and confirms clinical suitability before booking.

What does a session cost?

Bloom’s current published fee is $240 for telehealth therapy and $360 for an in-community appointment. Diagnostic and cognitive assessments may have different scope and fees, which should be confirmed before proceeding.

Can Medicare cover an ADHD, autism or cognitive assessment?

Not automatically. Better Access primarily supports eligible mental health treatment. Assessment coverage depends on the service, referral, provider and MBS item. Bloom will explain the proposed scope and cost before booking.

Can I also claim private health insurance?

You generally cannot use private ancillary insurance to top up a service for which you claim a Medicare benefit. Ask your fund about alternatives if you are not claiming Medicare for the appointment.

Need urgent help? Bloom is not a crisis or emergency service. Call 000 if there is immediate danger. Lifeline is available on 13 11 14.
