AGED CAREIn-home allied health Australia-wideLocal & telehealth options Person-ledYour goals and choices PracticalSupport for everyday life CollaborativeFamily, carers & providers In plain English

Speech pathologists support more than speech.

A speech pathologist can assess and support speech, language, voice, cognitive communication and swallowing. The aim is practical: helping you express choices, stay connected, understand information and eat and drink as safely and comfortably as possible.

Family, carers and mealtime partners are included—with consent—so strategies work beyond the appointment. What Aged Care Speech Pathology actually is

Clinical expertise connected to the life you want to live.

We look at your strengths, health, environment, routines and priorities. From there, we agree on practical support that is relevant, understandable and able to be reviewed.

1

Express needs and choices more easily

Assessment considers how to express needs and choices though speech or via AAC.

2

Stay involved in conversations

Recommendations for staying engaged in conversations are practical for the older person, their family, carers and care team.

3

Make eating and drinking safer

Support aims to make eating and drinking safer through building appropriate skills whilst considering the environment and providing education.

4

Give carers clear, usable strategies

Progress towards giving carers clear, usable strategies that align with the older person’s priorities, safety, comfort and quality of life.

Common questions

Answers before you begin.

If you are unsure whether aged care speech pathology is the right service, tell us what is happening. You do not need to diagnose the solution yourself.

Ask us a question

What are signs of swallowing difficulty?

Possible signs include coughing or choking during meals, a wet or gurgly voice, food remaining in the mouth, recurrent chest infections, weight loss or meals taking much longer. Seek medical advice about new or concerning symptoms.

Can a speech pathologist change food textures?

After assessment, a speech pathologist may recommend texture-modified food or thickened fluids when clinically indicated. A dietitian may be involved to support nutrition and hydration.

Can speech pathology help with dementia?

It may support communication access, conversation strategies, swallowing and education for family or carers. Goals are tailored to the person and stage of change.

What should carers do before an assessment?

Note the changes observed, when they occur, foods or situations involved and any recent health events. Continue following existing medical or mealtime advice.

Can Bloom train the care team?

With consent and within the agreed service scope, the speech pathologist can explain strategies and help relevant supporters use the plan consistently.

What if someone is choking now?

Call 000 in an emergency. This page and Bloom’s enquiry form are not emergency services.
