Why Patients Choose Collins Street Specialist Centre

Collins Street Specialist Centre brings registered dental specialists from six fields into one practice on Level 8 of the Manchester Unity Building, 220 Collins Street, Melbourne. Patients choose us because their care can be assessed, planned and carried out by the specialists it needs without moving between separate practices, because those specialists review complex cases together, and because imaging and coordination happen in the same place. This page explains how that works in practice.

What does one location change for you?

Specialist dental treatment often involves more than one clinician. When each specialist works in a different practice, you may repeat your history, collect and carry X-rays, and wait for letters to pass between offices. At Collins Street Specialist Centre our oral and maxillofacial surgeons, endodontists, orthodontists, periodontists, prosthodontists and paediatric dentists all practise at 220 Collins Street. Your records stay in one place, appointments can be planned in sequence, and the specialists involved can speak to each other directly.

How does peer review work here?

Dentistry has become more specialised over time, and no single clinician is expected to manage every type of problem. When a case is not straightforward, our specialists discuss it together before treatment begins. For example, a prosthodontist planning implant-supported teeth may review the scans with a surgeon or periodontist, or an orthodontist may plan with a surgeon when jaw position is part of the problem. The aim is a plan that sets out the steps in a sensible order, with each specialist responsible for their part.

If one of our specialists thinks you would benefit from seeing a colleague in another field, that internal referral happens within the practice, with your consent.

Who coordinates your care?

Our patient coordinators and practice management team organise appointments, keep track of where you are in a treatment plan, and make sure information reaches the specialists involved. If you have a question between visits, they are your first point of contact on (03) 9650 2726.

What technology do we use?

We have imaging and planning equipment on site so that information is available at your appointment. This includes:

Equipment supports clinical judgement but does not replace it, and your specialist will explain why any imaging or technique is recommended for you.

How can you check our specialists' registration?

Every person on our team page is listed with their specialist title and qualifications. You can confirm a practitioner's registration and specialty through the public register of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) at ahpra.gov.au. We encourage patients to check before any specialist treatment.

Where are we?

We are on Level 8 of the Manchester Unity Building, at 220 Collins Street on the corner of Collins and Swanston Streets, opposite the Melbourne Town Hall. Trams stop on both Collins and Swanston Streets, Flinders Street station is about a 10 minute walk away, and Wilsons Parking on Flinders Lane is the closest car park.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to see several specialists?

No. Many patients see one specialist for a single course of treatment. A second specialist is involved only when your treatment needs it, and your specialist will explain why before arranging it.

Will my general dentist stay involved?

Yes, if you would like them to. With your consent we send reports to your dentist, and many patients continue routine care with their own dentist while seeing us for specialist treatment.

How long does a first consultation take?

It depends on the specialty and what is being assessed, including whether imaging is needed. Our team will give you an idea of the time to allow when you book.

Can I get a second opinion?

Yes. You can book a consultation with one of our specialists for an opinion on a treatment plan you have been given elsewhere. Bring any X-rays, scans and the written plan so the specialist can review them.
