What is digital orthodontics?

Digital orthodontics means using scans and computer models, rather than only impressions and flat photographs, to record your teeth and plan their movement. At Collins Street Specialist Centre we have iTero intraoral scanning and Invisalign ClinCheck software, which let the orthodontist show you a model of your teeth and a simulated plan of how they could move. A simulation is a planning tool, not a prediction of your final result.

How does clear aligner therapy work?

Clear aligners are a series of removable, transparent trays made to fit your teeth. Each set applies gentle pressure to move teeth a small step, and you change to the next set on a schedule your orthodontist sets. They need to be worn for most of the day and removed for eating and cleaning. Aligners are not right for every bite, and Dr Ch’ng will explain if braces would suit your case better. More about appliances is on our orthodontics page.

Can I have my consultation in Mandarin?

Dr Ch’ng converses in Mandarin. If you would like to discuss your treatment in Mandarin, let our team know when you call so it can be noted on your booking.

Frequently asked questions

Who is a good candidate for clear aligners?

Suitability depends on the type and amount of tooth movement needed and on your commitment to wearing the aligners as directed. Some bite problems respond better to fixed braces. Dr Ch’ng assesses your teeth, gums and bite, usually with a digital scan, before recommending an approach, and he will discuss the limitations of each option.

What happens at a first orthodontic appointment with Dr Ch’ng?

Dr Ch’ng asks about your concerns and dental history, examines your teeth and bite, and may take photographs, X-rays or a scan. He then talks through the options, the likely length of treatment and the fees.

Does Dr Ch’ng need a referral from my dentist?

Our published guidance is that a referral is not needed to see our specialists. You are welcome to bring any letter, X-rays or scans from your dentist.

Can I pay for aligners or braces in instalments?

Payment plans through Payright and TLC, and early release of superannuation through Supercare, may be available subject to each provider's eligibility criteria. Our team can explain the options after you receive your written treatment estimate. See our payment plans page.
