Dr Areti Vrochari, Specialist Endodontist

Dr Areti Vrochari is a specialist endodontist who consults at Collins Street Specialist Centre, Level 8, Manchester Unity Building, 220 Collins Street, Melbourne. Her training in Greece and Germany spans endodontics, restorative and aesthetic dentistry, and dental biomaterials (the science of the materials used to repair teeth). She has been treating patients for over 17 years. That combination is useful when a tooth needs root canal treatment and also a sound plan for how it will be rebuilt afterwards. Call (03) 9650 2726 to book.

What qualifications does Dr Vrochari hold?

Her qualifications on our team page are DDS, DrMedDent (Endo). Her education includes:

How does her restorative background shape her endodontic care?

Before and alongside her endodontic specialty training, Dr Vrochari worked extensively in restorative and aesthetic dentistry. Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, but the tooth still has to be sealed and protected so it can keep working. Her familiarity with crowns, all-ceramic restorations and dental materials helps her consider the final restoration from the start, and discuss it with the dentist or prosthodontist who will place it.

What teaching and writing has Dr Vrochari done?

Dr Vrochari has been a clinical instructor in the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of Athens School of Dentistry, and a lecturer at the School of Dentistry, Griffith University. She has written and co-written clinical and research articles on dental biomaterials, aesthetic and restorative dentistry and prosthodontics. She is a co-author of a textbook on all-ceramic restorations and the main author of a clinical manual on restorative dentistry, and she reviews manuscripts for several international journals. She lectures on aesthetic and restorative dentistry and dental materials, and belongs to a number of scientific societies.

What treatments does Dr Vrochari provide?

Within our endodontic service Dr Vrochari diagnoses the cause of toothache and provides root canal treatment and re-treatment, care of cracked teeth, internal whitening of a tooth that has darkened, endodontic surgery and management of injured teeth. Our endodontics page describes each of these in more detail.

Is Dr Vrochari's registration on the public register?

Yes. Dr Vrochari is listed with specialist registration in endodontics. You can search any practitioner's name on the register at ahpra.gov.au to confirm their current registration.

Planning your consultation

To help Dr Vrochari assess your tooth, bring recent X-rays, details of past fillings or crowns on the tooth, your medical history and current medicines, and your health fund card. You could ask her how the tooth will be restored once treatment is complete, whether the existing crown or filling can stay, and what the alternatives would involve.

Who are Dr Vrochari's colleagues in endodontics?

Our other specialist endodontists are Dr Gregory Tilley, Prof Chankhrit Sathorn and Dr Aovana Timmerman. Because our prosthodontists practise in the same centre, Dr Vrochari can discuss the restoration of a treated tooth with them directly when that suits your plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dental biomaterial?

It is any material placed in or on a tooth, such as filling materials, cements, ceramics and the materials used to seal root canals. Each behaves differently in strength, appearance and how it bonds to tooth. Dr Vrochari's doctorate focused on this field, and she can explain why a particular material is suggested for your tooth.

Can a tooth with a crown have root canal treatment?

Often, yes. In many cases the endodontist can work through a small opening in the crown and then seal it. Sometimes the crown needs to be replaced, for example if it is loose or there is decay beneath it. Dr Vrochari will assess your tooth and explain which approach applies.

Do I need to see my own dentist before booking?

No. Our published guidance is that you can book with our specialists without a referral. If your dentist has recent X-rays of the tooth, ask for copies, as these can help with diagnosis.

What happens after my root canal treatment is finished?

Dr Vrochari will seal the tooth and explain the next step, which is often a filling or crown placed by your dentist or one of our prosthodontists. We send a report to your dentist, with your consent, and may recommend a review X-ray to check healing.
