Dr Aovana Timmerman, Specialist Endodontist
Dr Aovana Timmerman is a specialist endodontist at Collins Street Specialist Centre, consulting on Level 8 of the Manchester Unity Building at 220 Collins Street, Melbourne. She provides root canal care for teeth affected by infection, inflammation, cracks or injury. A University of Melbourne graduate, she completed her specialist endodontic training there, has a particular involvement in dental traumatology (the care of injured teeth), teaches and examines dentists, and is fluent in Mandarin. Phone (03) 9650 2726 to make an appointment.
What do Dr Timmerman's qualifications mean?
Our team page lists BDSc (Melb), FRACDS, DCD(Melb), GCertClinTeach, MRACDS (Endo):
- BDSc (Melb): Bachelor of Dental Science from the University of Melbourne, awarded in 2001.
- FRACDS: Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, completed in 2010.
- DCD(Melb): Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in endodontics, the specialist degree, from the University of Melbourne.
- GCertClinTeach: Graduate Certificate in Clinical Teaching, awarded in 2019.
- MRACDS (Endo): membership of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in endodontics.
Where did Dr Timmerman train and work?
After graduating in 2001 and gaining her college fellowship in 2010, Dr Timmerman went on to specialist training in endodontics. During that training, up to 2016, she provided specialist endodontic care at Melbourne Dental Clinic, Plenty Valley Community Clinic and the Endodontic Specialist Unit of the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne. Working across public and community clinics gave her experience with a broad mix of patients and dental problems.
What is her interest in dental trauma?
In 2013 the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists awarded Dr Timmerman its JM Booth award, which supported her attendance at the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) congress in Turkey. She remains a member of the IADT. Injuries such as a knocked-out, loosened or broken tooth can affect the pulp, sometimes months after the event, so follow-up by an endodontist can be part of the care after an accident.
How is Dr Timmerman involved in teaching and research?
Dr Timmerman has taught endodontics since 2011. She is a clinical demonstrator in the endodontic component of the Doctor of Dental Surgery course at the University of Melbourne, and she examines dentists sitting the RACDS Membership (GDP) assessments and for the Australian Dental Council. Since 2013 she has carried out endodontic research at the University of Melbourne, with papers in Australian and international peer-reviewed journals. She is a member of the Australian Dental Association, the RACDS and the IADT.
Can I consult Dr Timmerman in Mandarin?
Dr Timmerman is fluent in Mandarin (Chinese). If you would prefer to discuss your treatment in Mandarin, mention this when you book so our team can arrange your appointment with her.
Which treatments does she provide?
As part of our endodontic service, Dr Timmerman assesses toothache and sensitivity, and provides root canal treatment, re-treatment, management of cracked teeth, internal whitening of discoloured teeth, endodontic surgery and care for teeth that have been injured. More detail is on our endodontics page.
How do I check her registration?
Dr Timmerman is listed with specialist registration in endodontics. You can confirm the registration of any dental practitioner by searching the public register at ahpra.gov.au.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring any X-rays or a letter from your dentist, a list of medicines and health conditions, and your health fund card. If the tooth was injured, note the date and what happened, as the timing of an injury helps with diagnosis. You might ask Dr Timmerman how the tooth will be monitored, what signs to watch for and how it will be restored.
Our endodontic team
Dr Timmerman works alongside Dr Gregory Tilley, Prof Chankhrit Sathorn and Dr Areti Vrochari. For children with injured teeth, our paediatric dentists practise in the same centre, and our prosthodontists can help when a treated tooth needs a crown.
Frequently asked questions
Should I call straight away after a dental injury?
Yes. If a tooth has been knocked, chipped or pushed out of position, phone us on (03) 9650 2726 during opening hours so we can advise on how soon it should be seen. Outside our hours, contact an emergency service. Dr Timmerman can then examine the tooth and plan any follow-up reviews.
Why might an injured tooth need root canal treatment later?
A knock can damage the blood supply to the pulp even when the tooth looks normal. Over weeks or months the pulp may stop responding or become infected, which can show as darkening, pain or swelling. Regular reviews with X-rays help detect these changes early so treatment can be planned.
Can I book Dr Timmerman directly?
Yes. Our published guidance is that you do not need a referral to see our specialists. If your dentist has already examined the tooth, ask them to send any X-rays or notes, or bring them with you.
How many appointments will I need?
That depends on the tooth, the number and shape of its canals and whether there is infection. Some teeth are completed in a single visit and others take two or more. Dr Timmerman will outline the expected number of visits and the fees before treatment starts.
